If you ask me, we should start to fully educate children from a very early age instead upholding taboos and imposing laws. I don't understand why it's bad for a child to watch sex on TV or in films, yet it's more acceptable for them to witness violence in such media?

Be aware that a lot of guys that age lie to boost their credibility. When I was 14, half the guys in my year were harping on about having had sex, and I believed it then but, looking back, I doubt most of them had actually done anything. When it comes to age, I think 16 is a good number. However, it's important to remember that some 16 year olds lately have the mental age of about 9, so it's kinda tough to tell. The thing that should be stressed is when you're ready for it (as well as your partner). I was 16 when I lost my virginity, and I don't regret it. It wasn't some stranger and, yes, we hadn't been going out for long, but we were both ready and that was that. The thing I don't like when people talk about sex is that they make it out like it's some huge deal. If you stress and worry about it, it only makes it harder and scarier when the time comes. You should be doing it with somebody who relaxes you, and if you can't get relaxed about it then you're not ready. I've never, personally, agreed with the whole "No Sex before Marriage" thing, but if that's what people want, then that's what people want. Sex should be talked about more in schools, ESPECIALLY in the US. I don't think half of my school knew what a condom was. Acting like the problem isn't there doesn't make it go away. |

Sex is a highly personal thing. No matter how many times it comes up in conversation, or how universally desireable it might be, it's personal. The experience of losing your virginity is always going to be slightly different to somebody elses (I wouldn't know from experience, but having asked people, the general consensus is that it's usually not that great first time, but the stories are all different) and the age at which you're "mature" enough to have sex is personal. The age at which somebody is physically mature and mentally mature may not always add up. In fact, I reckon in a lot of people they are never mentally mature enough to have sex. Far too many people are irresponsible in regards to sex and having children. They won't use protection 100% of the time - forget about how accurate contraception is, if you don't use it at all then that's showing ultimate impatience/irresponsibility - and then they'll end up with a child OR an STD. A lot of children, unfortunately enough, are accidents and that's all down to irresponsibility more often than not. A 13 year old boy could get a girl pregnant, and still have the same mental capacity as a 43 year old man that fathers a child - if they don't have the right knowledge and make no attempt at trying to learn, which happens with a lot of people, then you have an example of an irresponsible person and a bad parent that sacrificed their future and the future of whoever they slept with for the sake of having a few moments of pleasure. And don't get me wrong, it's not always men that are to blame, there are a lot of stupid girls out there that aren't really fit or mentally able to look after children as well, but in general I think men are less able to realise that sex isn't everything in comparison to women - though there are going to be exceptions of course. So in terms of an age where anybody would be ready to have sex, you can't pick. The legal age is the minimum age that you're deemed legally responsible to have sex, that doesn't necessarily mean that you personally are ready, it's a consensus based on "If someone is below this age, they should DEFINATELY not be having sex, because they are too young," and the definition of too young, varies. |

You have sex when only you feel like it. I've met some people who've had sex at the age of 14 or 15, which is ill advised but it's their life and their choices. Like what Chris and Cal said, you don't just become ready at a certain age. Also, as for the bible topic, over the years it's probably been misquoted and changed to suit certain people from the original, so take a lot of those rules with a grain of salt. |

Actually, if you want to make SMART ***** comments like that we'll go into what CRITICAL changes happen at 18. You can enlist You can vote You are legally allowed to be a caregiver for a CHILD, YOUR CHILD. You can WORK full-time You can get an apartment on your own. You can take a GED/attend College. Credit! Fact of the matter cal, despite your smart ***** comments is you have a lot more options when you're considered a LEGAL ADULT. ***** your ignorant comments. Making such outlandish comments about responsibility at 18. Being a parent believe it or not does harden some people into adults. Edited by Fulgore, Nov 4 2011, 05:35 PM.

Not sure if sarcastic or serious... All those things you listed are social norms set by society. As a society, in the US at least, we seem to agree that by 18 you are responsible enough to do all those things. That does not mean that everyone that age is actually responsible. |

Yup. because once you can vote, >insert rest of stuff you said< you're ready to raise a child. Your logic is flawed. Being responsible enough or ready to have a kid has nothing to do with age and what you're already able to do. |

Alot of those things also doesn't mean you are magically ready at that age. Also you don't have to call cal that and insult him like that because you don't agree with him if you know what I mean. |

It's irrelevant if some people have mental deficiencies that deprive them from caring for a child. Most people who can't have a child at 18, can't have a child at 40. Point being, any intelligent human who genuinely cares about their child has the tools at 18 to put forth their honest foot and forge a life for themselves and their child. You can even do this as a single parent if your conviction is strong enough. Cal, don't respond to ANY of my posts. You never seem to have anything good to contribute, just snide remarks. @DAnrich, you been under a rock? Have you not seen the ***** cal starts with me? No, cal has gone a little beyond making this about him 'stressing his disagreement'. There was plenty of ways to debate that. Making a snide comment was not the way. Why don't you two, Fulgore and Cal, just ignore each other and be on your ways? There doesn't need to be any heat in here. For me, I agree with the ones who said it's variable. I was "ready" at a very young age, although I didn't actually have sex until I was 16. I don't take the legal age as an absolute rule, more as the socially recommended age. |

Sorry, I keep thinking you're danrich. Anyway, moving on. Let's examine his response to my post. Yup, because everyone is magically responsible and ready at that age. Had very little bearing or input. From my past experience cal is a very obnoxious passive aggressive *****. This comes off as a snide and scornful post. Also@KP. I've requested how many times for him to NEVER be able to see my posts? I want him blocked if possible. I'm tired of seeing him respond to everytopic I jump in. Sometimes I want to make a post in a general/DD topic without CAL Responding with something smart to say. Edited by Fulgore, Nov 4 2011, 05:53 PM.
