Shonen Jump Magazine Going DIGITAL

Viz has just announced that Shonen Jump Magazine will be going digital. The digital service will be called Shonen Jump Alpha and will REPLACE the print edition. I just purchased Toriko volumes 1 and 2 digitally. I will for sure subscribe to their new digital service when it's available. It's sad to see the print edition being discontinued but I kind of understand why they've decided to do this.

Pros:
Reduces waste
Cuts down on piracy
Saves Viz money
Service is cheap
Manga 2 weeks after Japanese release
Saves shelf space
Manga can be read on mobile devices and computers

Cons:
It's not a physical format

Quote:

Each issue of the anthology will have installments of Bakuman., Bleach, Naruto, Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan, One Piece, and Toriko — two weeks after their print debut in Japan's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine.
Weekly Shonen Jump Alpha will be available on VizManga.com and Viz Manga apps for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad devices. An annual membership will cost US$25.99 for 48 weekly issues. (Weekly Shonen Jump takes a few weeks off during the year in Japan.) Single issues will cost US$0.99 for a four-week rental. Any issue on one device can be read on another device with the same user account via VizManga.com or the Viz Manga app.

Viz will also offer Shonen Jump Digital Warp an accelerated digital release of select manga titles to bridge the gap between the latest English graphic novels in print and the latest Japanese installments in print. For example, Shonen Jump Digital Warp is starting from Naruto volume 53 now. (Viz published the print version of Naruto volume 52 last month.)

After Weekly Shonen Jump Alpha launches, Viz Media plans to stop publishing the print edition of its Shonen Jump magazine next March with the "farewell April 2012 issue." Viz has been publishing the monthly magazine since 2003.

I'm in agreement with this decision. All those pros far outweigh that one con IMO. Now I might finally be able to subscribe.

What I love about VIz's digital manga service is that it allows you to carry a whole series (DBZ) in the palm of your hand. Great if you get into a DBZ argument and need to cite the manga.

Now how will I ever start my Shonen Jump collection?

The Pros are really persuasive and it'd be much more easier too. But I'm too "old school" to be bothered by it I'd like print better.

Wait does this apply to the actual manga volumes themselves or just the magazine (Which I've never read before and assume it has 1 chapter of a bunch of mangas in one)

I'm not sure how this will affect the manga releases.
Viz has said that the 2 week gap is just to leave room for improvement. They could shorten it in the future.

Actually there is a con to the digital service and this is important if you are buying single issues and are not getting a year membership.

Single issues will cost US$0.99 for a four-week rental. Meaning anyone who doesn't want a year long can only read their manga purchase for 4 weeks time. Luckily this is only the single issues.

Plus it would cost you twice as much. Might as well pay the $25.99 and get a years worth of manga.

Ok to answer the question about printed volumes it looks like they'll be released at the same rate.
However if you purchase your manga digitally you'll receive it much earlier.

I may not deserve to live, but I will protect those in my reach with my reverse blade!

When I found out about this I sent hate mail.

There is something about physical copies that digitized pictures can never capture. I love holding it in my hand, looking through the new and upcoming manga artists, and some who are just kids, I love being excited to see the new color front page for every month, now this is all over. Of course I'll switch with everyone else, but I truly hate this.

Sorry for just now replying, just saw it haha.

Oh and btw, this months Shonen Jump was awesome. I loved the Bakuman Artist cover and loved the continuation of the stroryline. Still have to read Bleach though haha.
