How to define identity?; the teleporter argument

Are you still the same person on the other side? Would YOU use the teleporter?

Could it be that our memories define who we are (Locke)? Or is the self a collection of perceptions (Hume)? What's to say we don't have multiple selves contained within a single mind accessing the same memories?

My thoughts: the self is exclusively connected to a single entity. You do not share a self with a twin or a clone, therefore I believe using such a device would erase who you are entirely, not just your original body.

I wonder how the initial fake explanation (first scenario) of the teleportation device is any different from the actual one (second scenario), either way the original person has to be destroyed then scanned so that they can be rebuilt. Does it matter whether your original matter/energy was used to reconstruct you? The cells in our bodies are constantly being replaced anyway. How is the third scenario (delaying destruction by 5 minutes) any less moral than the first two?

I may not deserve to live, but I will protect those in my reach with my reverse blade!

The major flaw in the scientist's logic was that he made the assumption that the copy/original were the EXACT same. Hypothetically if this was all real then one entity wouldn't be separate from the other in terms of past and even present, but what matters is the future. You have to be able to kill yourself either way to have a future, and in return you seem to erase the other's. This makes you believe that they're not the same, because their futures were completely different. When you kill yourself while copying yourself at the same time you still only have one future, however with 2 living "you's" that's not the case.

He had no problem killing himself, because he knew that he would still live, however (as the scenario eventually pointed out) without automatically having one destroyed who gets to decide which dies or not?

To answer your question, no I wouldn't use it. Not much good can come from it, but the negative consequences should be obvious enough.

It's quite strange how each copy is made to remember entering and exiting the device. I've heard arguments before that the device would be safe if it were to destroy the original body without delay, although I don't see how that is different from leaving 5 minutes in between considering time is abstract.

Say that conscious was somehow not the result of physical processes within the brain, how would a physical device interact with a non-physical soul and transfer it over to the new body? Even if I believed in a soul, that is why I wouldn't step in.

Things like a soul, being in love, etc are all confusing reactions in the brain that simply only exist because we say they do. That being said it would seem to be impossible, at least in the way the scientist goes about it here.

Would I be "me" had I lived in a different era? What about if I had one distinct change about me? I don't understand where true identity lies. Though I find most of the these characteristics..........

-Beliefs
-Memories

I personaly would want to use the device. The clone of me or Orginal could life my life while I go out and do whatever the hell I want.
