Here in Ireland the majority of schools only allow one gender. Basically, you have boys schools and girls schools. The school that I went to as a child was an only boys secondary school, but I read in the newspaper that it's allowing girls into the school next September. Do you think it would help a person later in life to get used to being around girls from an early age? Post your opinions. |

I've always been around schools that allow both genders. I don't see the harm in it or the point in separating them. |

They only have two schools like that in Plymouth as far as I'm aware. Plymouth High school for girls and Plymouth High school for boys. I think it's quite an outdated idea and I don't understand what seperating genders is supposed to achieve. If anything, seperating students by gender does more harm than good. I'm not sure segragation of any kind has ever been shown to be constructive or productive. And then, what's the point of having seperate schools if they're going to be socialisiing outside of school hours anyway? All I can see it doing is making people a bit more ignorant of each other. |

I agree with both of you here. It's great to be friends with girls and boys, spending 8 hours a day surrounded by boys gets boring after a while. Even if you socialize with both genders outside of school, you still spend 8 hours of your day not meeting with them. |

It's about time, lol, it's not very good now to have schools where groups are seperated becuase it helps to encourage diversity because afterall, the outside world is diverse. I don't know where it originates but I think it would be more helpful to kids growing up to be in a diverse enviroment. |

in certain cultures, gender separated schooling makes sense, but in western society, mixed schools are definitely better. |

I think mixed schools is a great thing. In the real world you are not going to be only dealing with boys every single day of your life but also girls too. If you are put in a all guys school for 12 years or however long your system is and then come out into the real world you are not going to know what the other gender is really like. In the real world you deal with all kinds of people. Females, males, young, old. I think it is a good idea. |

Where I live most people who go to single gender schools are mocked by their friends or students from other schools. I find it to be an outdated system personally. In life you are going to have to deal with both genders all the time and in fact most people who go to these schools are catching up with mixed gender groups out of school anyway. I still struggle to find a reason to separate the genders, to me it is a little bit counterproductive when they will just end up mixed at work or elsewhere. |

in some cultures it's necessary. for example, in the middle east, it's controversial for a girl to even go to school at all in some places. in environments like that, single gender schools are currently better, because they don't have the added stigma of encouraging improper interaction between genders. a single gender girls' school is therefore better than no school for girls at all. |
