By the way, before I go to sleep, I meant this more as in the values of my religion. Such as how to treat people and such. Not so much that there once lived a man named Jesus. I do believe that, but I'd say that's more of a choice thing. My children would have the choice, I certainly would not shun them if they weren't Christians. My values I've been taught, though, will be passed down. Edited by J-Smack, Sep 16 2011, 07:19 AM.

I thought the purpose of a Christian was to be his witnesses and lead others to him? Confidence could also be replaced with the term "ignorance" if you can't truly defend what you believe.
I 100% agree with this. I do feel it's a parent's responsibility to teach their kids what's right in this world, no matter if I'm wrong or if you are no one can blame you for teaching your children what you personally believe is right. In the end however it's an individual choice. I wish my parents were the same way, I might actually have a relationship with my father now (who is a Sunday School teacher). I was asked to leave when I told him my beliefs, and I wanted to go, but I truly think everyone needs a father figure of some sort, I do find myself wishing he was around sometimes. Not that you care, but I really do want you to know how much I agree with you. |

That's too bad about your father Cal, It's a shame when families do that. It seems hyprocritical to me when "religious" people think that it's "holy" when they shun their own family members because their beliefs differ.May I ask what religion your father is? Edit: And, yeah, I do care that you agree with me, ha. I think everyone wants people to agree with them to some extent--then again, I never lose any sleep if people don't. As long as they aren't jerks about it or anything. Edited by J-Smack, Sep 16 2011, 07:32 AM.

If you agree that the Bible has mistakes then how do you know what's right to follow? How do you agree with a "God" that tells people not to kill then supposedly wipes out an entire world but a few people? Do you follow the ten commandments? If so what day do you got to church? if it's on Sunday then you've already broke the "Remember the Holy Day" rule as the 7th day of the week is the holy day, (which is Saturday to the 90% of people that go on Sunday). Do you dismiss the Old Testament for the New Testament? If so then why? Describe your "faith" in detail, I want to understand the meaning of the subjective term from your eyes. What makes you think your religion is right when there are countless others that are as or more dedicated than you? How do you explain the science that disproves a lot of what the bible says?
Missionary Baptist, but more of just a radical Christian. He's a very respected member of a small town full of religious folk. I''m just glad to be out of the town. As I will tell anyone if you're trying your best to find the answers and telling others to find their answers you're ok in my book. I might 100% disagree with you, but you've answered all my questions honestly and although we disagree you do have my respect. Edited by Cal, Sep 16 2011, 07:39 AM.

That seems irritating. See, I came from Chicago, a very diverse town and I moved to small-town Arkansas, where Bubba and all of his friends have opened up a church to praise the Lord and brainwash people into their own way of thinking. I don't agree with someone opening a church because they think they'd make a "good preacher." Catholic priests go through years of school in order to be ordained. Anyway, I feel you for your situation. I'm not really accepted by everyone in my town because I don't think people are going to hell because they don't believe in Christ. My personal belief. |

Ill break this down question by question i guess..and im sure ill explain something wrong because its hard to use words for me for some of things..so bear with me..Here goes "If you agree that the Bible has mistakes then how do you know what's right to follow? How do you agree with a "God" that tells people not to kill then supposedly wipes out an entire world but a few people?" I follow what I believe to be right mixed with Bible teachings and things Ive learned from my parents and role models and what not...and if youre refurring to Noah's ark..thats from the Old Testament..many Christians dont even read the old testament because much of it isnt to be taken literally "Do you follow the ten commandments? If so what day do you got to church? if it's on Sunday then you've already broke the "Remember the Holy Day" rule as the 7th day of the week is the holy day, (which is Saturday to the 90% of people that go on Sunday)." I try to, I go to Church on Sunday when I go, And i was always taught that that Commandment meant that you were supposed to worship the lord on that day and rest.. "Do you dismiss the Old Testament for the New Testament? If so then why? " I dismiss some of the Old Testament..not All of it "Describe your "faith" in detail, I want to understand the meaning of the subjective term form your eyes." Ill try to answer this the best i can..I believe that there has to be a God, I think that God tests our faith using my different ways such as not proving himself to us directly..I think of life as a test..If you fail you go to hell, and if you pass you go to heaven..life is just a short term test and I think it only makes sense to use it to believe in the lord and lead a good life to spend an infinite number of time in heaven "What makes you think your religion is right when there are countless others that are as or more dedicated than you?" I think that as long as you believe in a higher power and help others that people will be rewarded...I dont think it matters what religion you are..i just happened to be raised a Christian How do you explain the science that disproves a lot of what the bible says? I think its another test of faith..I think its more logical to believe in God than Science..i mean think about it..if the earth was any closer to the sun we would fry..if it was any further wed freeze..Why does sex give pleasure? So that we keep reproducing..people wouldnt have sex if there wasnt any pleasure in it..I could go on and on about things like that so there it is..thats kind of a halfass version of my beliefs and faith..its hard to put it in words and Im sure a lot of it could be taken out of context Ok..now im bracing myself for the onslaught of criticism im gonna receive

I'll be back tomorrow to comment to all of this. For now, I don't have enough time before I go to bed.
I can understand that. A lot of "churches" are nothing more than businesses nowadays anyway. Brainwashing usually goes hand-in-hand with most beliefs, religious or not, especially if you're expected to be 100% obedient even though you might not understand some things. |

Yeah I think if it wasn't for all the brain washing kind of stuff at an early age there would be far far more athiests People have a right to their own opinion I think people should just be left alone to figure out things for themselves no teaching about god and how everything makes you a sinner If people want to read the bible they will let them think what they want of it don't read it to them at birth that's not accepting people can have their own belief that's forcing your own upon others not really giving them a chance to do think of anything else, for fear of burning in hell for all eternity Everything from the bible does just seem to be twisted how do we know they don't just add things? The original bible is in aramaic, a dead language which nobody can fully translate so every bible ever is only a partially translated version of the original DBZ example it's like the difference between the english and japanese dubs they are almost never the same That's not funny. But anyway I don't think anybody should be made to follow any religion wait until they are old enough to think for theirselves and leave a bible in their room I know few people who even respect the religion they say they follow, most use it as an excuse not to do things on a Sunday And I think that's just because how silly people are about teaching it Not that having a religion is silly what I'm saying is that people use hell to scare people in to "believing" far too much Stuff in the bible just makes god sound like a sinister being I don't want to worship an evil entity like that, may aswel pray to Hitler |

If you can answer all of those questions honestly and to the best of your personal opinion, then I see no reason why you should have ever gotten upset in the first place. (Referring to your second or third post here) If someone disagrees with you here, that isn't a green light for you to get angry. Even if your faith is under fire. I'm just glad you didn't start doing what many people before you have done. And that is forgetting the topic at hand and firing slander at others. But I might remind the lot of you that this topic isn't about why you're a Christian. It's about why some Atheists have converted from Catholicism. And I fall under that category. I'll answer later. |

I was raised to be a Catholic in a country that's main religion was and still is Catholicism. Recently I've turned to Christianity, which is very similar to Catholicism but because of all of the things that happened in the Catholic church, I've found myself thinking that it's a corrupt and sickening society full of pedophiles. Not all priests are pedophiles, of course, but damn it, too many of them were/are. |

I read the first post and skipped straight to this page and I can already see a few argument posts. I stay out of those kind of things though >_> As for the actual question I don't think there's going to be a specific answer. I'm sure it'll be different for each of them however as far as I know Christianity is heavily based on faith, and if you don't have enough of it then in today's world I'd imagine it'd be easy to be swayed to atheism. I was actually raised an Atheist (Not in a serious way though, in general my family never tried to push any religion (or lack of) onto me and just let me decide, but lack of religious influence made me Atheist). Anyway I was "raised" an Atheist but later turned Agnostic due to...reasons... I honestly don't think humans could EVER figure God out if he was real. It's just not that simple. |

Yes, and it aggravates me when people separate the two. Catholicism was the first organized Christian religion. Catholic was the only Christian besides Eastern Orthodox until the 1500s. Protestants generally separate the two when they refer to them, referring to themselves as "Christians" and Catholics as "Catholics" but "not Christians." Protestants are any Christian religion aside from Catholicism and Eastern Orthodox, folks. Learn your stuff first if you want to inform people about it. |
