I don't think he was jailed for just being rude but more for being a persistant nuisance. I see it as the same as someone who turns up at strangers funerals shouting abuse.
Someone turning up to a funeral and shouting abuse is a public order offence though, that's a diffrent case.

Absurd. Simply absurd. Free speech is apparently gone. I caused you distress? Seriously? You don't even know me, so it's irrelevant. That's like you getting arrested for telling someone you're repoing their car on facebook.

I may not deserve to live, but I will protect those in my reach with my reverse blade!

I have to say though, if someone was doing this stuff to someone really close to me, then I probably would of just beat the **** out of them and called it a day.

I know being disrespectful isn't against the law, but as Hank would say, "my foot will be driven so far up your ***" it wont even be funny anymore.

Spot on. I'm sure a well placed personal warning would of made him back off.

If my child died and somebody made fun of them.... I'd physically assault him. I have no problem with people insulting me, but on that level....

Sickening.

I actually just saw 2 girls making fun of and harassing a mentally retarded girl in my gym class. I find that pathetic for someone to sink so low.

Greetings. I will be your waifu this season.

Jail is pointless it won't change him

He could make anonymous accounts on websites and just continue doing it, and he probably will it doesn't sound like he has many friends
I know his life he'll go back to it, guaranteed

He should essentially get put on probation any more than that is ridiculous

Freedom of speech just isn't a right anymore they act like it is but it's certainly died
I'm surprised you can't just phone the police and get people put away because you don't like them or because they smell bad
Probably next

I agree with basically everything people are posting in this thread. Obviously he's a dick but there's no law against that. And jailing him for causing distress to people is ridiculous too. I guarantee you that public figures in the media, people like Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh, cause far more distress to people with comments they make. I know what he did sucks and I'd be extremely pissed off if it was related to somebody I knew dying but I don't think what he did causes nearly as much damage as what a lot of other people do and get away with. He shouldn't be jailed for it.

I think it was a right decision to put him in jail for what he did. Sometimes I wish that people who go to jail learn their lesson not to cause any trouble when they're released. I hope he learns his lesson not to post offensive posts on facebook again and have a good start of being friendly towards people. Always keep the light brighter than the darkness inside you. Well that's all I have to say on this man going to jail.

Cyber bullying has become a very serious offense, actually. So I can see why they dealt with it this way.

Stop throwing Freedom of Speech around like it's an international "Get out of jail, then feel free to be a disgusting twat card."
Freedom of Speech has many exceptions in every country, exceptions which are designed to stop people behaving in an unacceptable manner. "...Threatening, abusive, or insulting speech or behaviour.... ...obscenity, indecency including corruption of public morals and outraging public decency..." These are from wikipedia, and these are the one's I'd say repeatedly harassing a grieving family is most certainly abusive and insulting behaviour, obscene, indecent, and ****ing outrageous.

It's a short jail sentence, and he's been banned from social networking sites. I think this is supposed to be an example to other freaks on the net, and perfectly deserved by the sick ****.

No, you can't say "Sure, you have freedom to speak so long as you're not being obnoxious" because you might as well be telling people to act the same way.

A ban from social networking sites is fine and expected because of how he acted but a jail sentance is too far.

You have people who mock the deaths of the "bad guys" and famous people, shouldn't they also go to prison? Or is it fine because those are okay to mock?

A life is a life and you can't have double standards, which imo, is what this story sets out.

What you're saying is that he should go to jail for being a dick.

Like what the others and myself said, morally it's wrong but it's not against the law in any form.

It all depends on the motive of it. If you're doing it for comedy's sake, then I have no problem with it as long as it's not especially tasteless (I've never felt death should stop someone laughing). But if you're doing it just for the sake of causing distress to a grieving family? I'd say that is illegal, even by the words of the law.

I'm not saying "Let's all throw away personal freedom, I hate that," I'm just saying that Freedom of Speech should not give people full permission to intentional cause distress to multiple grieving families. Imagine if it was you who'd just lost someone close to you, just to be harassed for weeks or months by this guy posting those videos and images? If he'd done this in person it would most certainly be illegal, so why not online?

Uhh, no. There is no exception to mocking someone's death period. Double standards are fail.
