Did i miss something? I don't recall Trunks going into the rosat twice. Did he?
I always thought after his second rosat visit, Vegeta surpassed Trunks considerably as trunks didn't go back in...
Of course Trunks went back in. Piccolo, then Vegeta, then Trunks.

 yeah, trunks and vegeta were still even at the cell games.
list of canon sources:

the DB manga, and the Dr. Slump manga as it applies to the crossover during the rra saga.

list of non canon sources:

everything else, regardless of origin, format, or quality.

ASSJ/USSJ is SSJ, essentially. ASSJ is SSJ while forcing more from your body and muscles in exchange for producing, expelling and containing ki. To go ASSJ is to perform beyond your max capabilities as is; that's why it can't be "mastered" like SSJ was; going over max = going over max, no matter how strong you are.

Instead of using ki to extort your body and fight at a power that over what's capable; use SSJ to fight at your best, and have ki to spare when things aren't going well.

Aside from this, I'm certain that the Cell Children could have just mimicked ASSJ if they really needed to (though I doubt that they did). Cell mimicked A(U)SSJ to show Future Trunks the Severity of the Phail, and Goku showed them how to win.

If Vegeta and Trunks not using ASSJ makes no sense, then neither does Goku not using ASSJ at Cell...
