Ok I need serious help. Well today I wrote a paper. I had to turn it in by midnight but the website was down. At 11. Now I am getting fuss at by my mother. She calls me a lazy bum, good for nothing, and says I am going to end up like me dad. Doing nothing at all. She evens says that this may have been one of the worst things I done in a long time. She says this lady does not mess around and that i am 14 and should start going up a bit instead of putting stuff off. She says next time I do this I am going to get a butt whopping. A very hard one too. She says I am just lying and saying that i am never going to listen to her and that no one ever listen to her but they always come back crying to her. She is almost right except for the last part. I need to learn how to stop doing this. I sometimes do this but this is the first time that putting stuff off made me miss something. Now can anyone give my advise on how not to do this so I can avoid getting yelled at. Thanks in advanced?

You could try doing the important things in your life first, then use all the time you want afterwards for other things. You'll feel a lot better about it too.

First of all, you're 14. Wether your mom likes it or not, you're going to mess up once in a while, it happens. Don't feel to bad about it and don't let your mother put you down to much over it.

Of course, procrastinating is not a good quality to have in life. What I would say is, if you have problems with doing big things, try and force yourself by doing it one small step at a time and then try finishing it two days ahead of the deadline.

See I myself am/was a HUGE procrastinater, to a point where I wouldn't study for my final exams in high school etc. However, I always managed to pass those, even without studying, because often in the weeks before hand, I would've picked up my book in a spare moment and just gone through the pages for 5 minutes. Because of that, I managed to get a lot of things done, even with my procrastinating.

Now, the method I explained above is far from perfect. Sometimes it's not hard continueing on something, but simply starting on something. At that point, it might be best to get away from home. The computer, the TV, episodes of Dragonball Z, ;) they all tend to get your concentration away. Try going to the public library, often it's less hard to force yourself to go to a place like that and while you're there, there's a good chance you'll manage to get some work done, because it'll be harder to procrastinate.

However the best method to stop procrastinating, is the hardest but the most effective. If you really want to stop, then you just have to stop. Don't talk about how, why or when, but just do it. That's the most effective way by far and once you're able to do that, things will come a lot easier. That takes a lot of willpower, but if you can manage it, you'll be a very happy person.

Good luck! Though remember, it's not that horrible if you mess up once in a while, you're young and there's WAY more to life then just schoolwork. Enjoy your life, of course try your best in school, but don't forget that there's so much more in life then just getting good results in school.

Great post.

There's no technique to stopping this bad habit, you just have to use the cold turkey method and simply stop.

Completing the task in small pieces would also be a good idea.
Your mother really shouldn't be giving you so much grief over nothing. Talk to her, explain that you're not perfect and you can't reach her high expectations in every single waking moment of your academic career.

Basically, tell her you've messed up and that every human has done so and will do so. It's not fair of her to treat you like that, I know she's your mother and you have to respect her but she's not the one feeling the pressure of exams and school

Hope I helped.

You're young so you shouldn't worry about it too much. I think a lot of us do it too. The way you stop procrastinating is by just doing what you have to do. Basically, you force yourself to do it. I also find that being away from distractions helps too. If you finish something early, than you always have time to go do whatever you want to do afterwards. It's sorta an award for accomplishing things early.

I agree with what the others have posted. I used to procrastinate a lot and I still do a little but not nearly as badly as I used to. The only way that I stopped doing it was basically just having a different mindset towards my work. Like the others said, you can't really just ease into it. I now try to start everything right when I get it even if it's a while before it's due. Even if I don't finish it the first day I'll have a head start so I won't have to work as hard later and won't be as pressured.

You are only 14 so it isn't like this is your last chance in life and if you screw it up you'll be doomed to be a failure. If you start doing your work on time now and stop procrastinating your previous habit won't have any lasting negative effect on your life. From what I've read of your posts on this forum in the time I've been here you seem like an intelligent guy who will have no problem doing very well if you just do your work.

Try and think of the consequences.
I know it may be a chore but if you do it early it'll feel more rewarding in the long run.

I bet you cant find one person here who has never procrastinated in their lives. A lot of teens do it.
I do it but I manage to get my work done and end up with an A or a B :P

That's such a lie, and I'll be back later to explain why!

How about taking some advice from a master procrastinator who is currently succeeding at conquering it?

Even when you think you've conquered it, you still notice yourself going back to procrastination. Because here I am, sitting on dbzf once again. You also notice yourself still doing things at the last minute. A condition where the rewards are always for the taking and work can always come later. In fact, some people are actually good at procrastination. Like myself it allows me to focus more if I'm doing things last minute, because my mind kicks into hyper-drive and gets it done. But it's not a good thing. The consequences of such are absolutely dramatic and could lead to failure for things like exams.

You can't conquer procrastination. It will always occur. Once you know you have it, all you can do is live with it. But here is a method that I have found helps to lessen the effects of it.
First you need to realize how much you're undertaking. For instance, you need to see the entire scope of your work ahead of you. For me, I can't fail my classes this semester. If I do, I will have to stay another semester and dish out extra money that I don't have. Therefore making it an extra two semesters until I secure the money. I don't want that, but I know I can't conquer my procrastination fully. I understand that this is the hardest semester that I will have until I graduate. The 8+ hours I spent on the first homework in 1 class is an indication as to what I have ahead of me. I have realized now that If I procrastinate like I have in the past, I will fail. Lesson #1.

Second, Remove distractions. Make up reasons why you don't want the distractions to overload your life. Lets say video games are the 1 thing you procrastinate with the most. For me, its the IRC chat area and DBZ forum. What I'm currently doing is coming up with false reasons why I'm not showing up at these two places as much as I have in the past. Negative reasons, that make me not want to be here. 1 of them is that I dislike the way Rogue has been behaving towards people lately. Even though I love rogue, and I know it's a lie, i've been saying that to myself to get myself away from this place. Lesson #2. Whatever works to get yourself away from what you do the most.

Third: Take a false sense of interest in the work. aka force yourself to be interested in it. This is the hardest thing to do. For instance Solid State Technology is mostly about Chemistry. I hate chemistry with a burning passion in my heart. But I'm killing it because i'm psyching myself into liking it for the time being. Lesson #3

Fourth: Plan a reward at the end, and in the middle. My current rewards planned for doing well this semester, is being able to enjoy a december holiday that I haven't had since I was 15. I've worked every year of my life during that time, and I'm super psyched to be able to go home and stay 3 weeks with my family, with the news of how well I did during my hardest semester. Shame will be upon my reward if I do not achieve this. Also, Wurstfest is coming up. The one day at the end of October where I get to go drink beer and eat sausage with sauerkraut until I puke. If I can't get everything done up to that point, then I won't go.

This is what will get me through this semester. In the past my procrastination has been so bad, that i've literally had to write 12, 8 page lab reports within the span of 1 week, in order to pass a class. Last semester I procrastinated on the homework in a math class so bad, that I did 15 assignments in 2 weeks, leaving room for 1 day of study for the final. I made a 30/100 and failed the class, that I'm retaking this semester.

You don't know what procrastination is until you've seen my habits sir. And i've got one of the more difficult degree's to accomplish. At your age DanielSan, it's not quite as important to conquer your procrastination. But in a few years, I guarantee you, you're going to have to take action against it. It can either be your greatest tool, or your greatest problem. I suggest grasping it by the nuts soon, and yanking until it squeals like a pig.

Another way would be to parts of what you want to do at select time. I need to follow my own advice.
