In my opinion, I see them using regular Super Saiyan, at least in the manga. In the anime, they're definitely using Grade 2. Spoiler: click to toggle As you can in the pictures, Vegeta's muscle mass at the Cell Games is nowhere near what it is while battling Semi-Perfect Cell. I know the aura argument is rather weak, but the auras don't match up either. Since I don't think Vegeta used Grade 2, there'd be no reason for Trunks to use it either.

Posts: 9,150 Group: Member Member #5,265 Joined: September 24, 2010 Gender Not Specified Favourite Anime dragonball/z/gt/movies What Browser do you use? internet explorer or firefox	neither trunks nor vegeta have the grade form muscle mass, but vegeta has the hair in some panels, and not in others. trunks wild hair can simply be attributed to how long his hair is, and because it's not naturally spiky, unlike every other saiyan who ever transformed. without the muscle mass, though, the hair is irrelevant, though. they are definitely ssj.
	list of canon sources: the DB manga, and the Dr. Slump manga as it applies to the crossover during the rra saga. list of non canon sources: everything else, regardless of origin, format, or quality. for those that blindly follow word of god

I don't think the form itself is "flawed" in the way USSj was, just that it took TOO much energy to use in a fight that would last long.
