Comedy Sitcoms: Why I hate them

There was a point in my life where I would use my computer, but have the TV running with just random programs on, like "That 70's Show." And something really bothered me during this time, and caused me to turn the TV off for good, even though I enjoyed the background noise. You all do it.
Particularly "That 70's Show", and other shows like Friends, or Seinfeld, would have what is called the "Laugh Track".
I can't stand this noise. Mostly its over usage. I can't watch any comedy sitcoms on the air today without succumbing to madness. After every single pun, joke, potentially funny incident, the laugh tack is inserted, and it is inserted based on how funny the producer imagines you'd think the joke is. If its a short small pun or joke, the laugh track is shortened to reflect that. If its a huge point of a joke, the laughter will be extended until the next time someone says something. Long dramatic pauses are inserted into script for this as well.

So I wondered, what would "That 70's show", be without the laugh track? Well I found it.

Would Dane Cook be funny without audience laughter? Or is he just a babbling/ dancing idiot who is unfunny? You call it.

Well now you may ask the question, why is any of this funny? It's funny because of psychology. When one person laughs, your brain finds comparisons to make to the potentially funny event. Then you laugh as well. Have you ever wondered why you sometimes never laugh out loud at comedies when you're in a room by yourself? That is because Laughter is contagious. Without the laugh track, you wouldn't watch sitcoms. They wouldn't make sense to have joke, after joke, after joke without laughter in the background. The era of live studio audiences is over, your left with an artificial laughter to cause you to laugh at the comedy.
The laugh track is meant to greatly enhance how funny you view a television show. Its a psychological game that producers play on you to get you to watch something. How does it feel being controlled?
This is why I can't stand Comedy Sitcoms. The artificial laughter not only bothers me, but disturbs me on a higher level. If you're not paying attention to the implications here, you're simply not paying attention to how media can effect our brains. And that scares me.

seriously E? i found that 70's show joke to be funny without the laugh track, always did. They have good timing on that show. Laugh tracks are insidiously evil though. Annoying as hell.

with that being said? lets make a comment about the lamebrain horribly acting animated comedian named....dane cook.

I cant describe how much of a jackass this dude is. Who does he think he is anyways? dennis leary? his manic act is over the top and I find it unsual people Do find him funny, to me he's about as funny as chris rock when he tells racist jokes. Never heard dane tell a racist joke but you get my drift.

I agree about the laugh track. I find it annoying and it is one of the reason I don't watch sitcoms. That and I don't want to base my schedule around a TV show.
Anyway, even if I do watch some sitcoms (I recently got into Big Bang Theory and no laugh track is keeping me from that) I can just tune out the laugh track myself. It is a highly useful skill I have developed through years of reading books on elementary/high school buses lol

This is all I have to say. And I had to insert words to keep it from being spam.

I watch a few shows with laugh tracks and don't even notice them unless I fade out, I don't think they're directly related to how funny I find a show though, I like some shows with it and some I don't like, however I guess I can't deny that it might have an affect on me unconsciously.

I detest laugh tracks. In my opinion they cheapen the quality of whatever they're added to. A good sitcom doesn't need laugh tracks. Peep Show, Scrubs, The Royal family and the Office.

On the otherhand, there are some great sitcoms which do have them. Only Fools and Horses, the Vicar of Dibley, Blackadder, The Young Ones, Men Behaving Badly, Frasier, Gimme Gimme Gimme ect.

For some reason I don't notice the laughter as much when watching these shows as I do when watching something like Friends or 3 and a half men. Maybe it's because the shows I like with laughter in don't over do it so much.

I can't remember if Roseanne had a laugh track, but I found it funny as hell regardless.

One guy that overuses the laugh track considerably is Dan Schneider, the guy who made All That!, The Amanda Show (I think), and iCarly. Now, back in the day, All That! was amazing, yeah, but he's seriously degraded over time, hence iCarly. Every single line has a laugh track following it almost. Like, really? Is everything they say that funny?

I usually notice it even in shows that I do find funny, the laughing track does kind of ruin the feel of the show for me, it intrupts the flow of events, if it's not funny then the laughing track isn't going to help anything.

The clip of the standup comedy isn't a good example to use though because they put silence in which brakes up the routine as well, which doesn't give the effect that it might be designed for.

But yeah, if I don't find something funny, I won't laugh, regardless of how much laughing there is being played.

I remember watching a few kids shows with my little brother, and after every single sentence there was canned laughter. Mostly around iCarly. And it's so unfunny.
The blonde girl with the black lips turned to Valkyrie.
"We know," she said. "We've seen the future. We know you're going to kill the world..."

Release it Gohan! Release everything! Remember all the pain he's caused... The people he's hurt... NOW MAKE THAT YOUR POWER!!!!

Some are worse than others. I find, That 70's Show makes me laugh even without the canned laughs. Then you have stuff like iCarly or Will & Grace which I don't find funny at all, where the canned laughter annoys me.

Exactly. I wish they'd bring live audiences back.

If you could afford to have big names, you could afford to do it infront of a live audiance and you'd make money from ticket sales and such. If it's a low budget sitcom, then well, probably not but really, I suppose it depends.

I just don't think it's as popular anymore, I don't think it makes a huge diffrence because I don't like any break in the story of external laughter.

Something tells me they've stopped doing live audiences because actors aren't as good as they used to be. Before entire scenes could be shot in just one place, for instance the set of "I Love Lucy" The Ricardo living room. They would remember their entire script, or most of it at least, and take less shots per scene so that the audience wouldn't become bored with breaks and screw ups.
Also what if an audience member makes some sort of sound? Production costs are included to edit out that sound. A huge turn-off for producers.

I hate Sitcoms for an entirely different reason, which is the sheer amount of overplaying, especially in my house. Comedy Central seems to always be on in the background, but it's not the laugh track that drives me up the wall, it's Ray Romano's voice. They should take the laugh track out of that show, just because it's not funny at all. Most of the shows such as Two and a Half Men, King of Queens, Everybody Loves Raymond and things like that, are just not funny, and the laugh track over the top of them does contribute to making the whole effect worse.
