Doctors have treated only three leukemia patients, but the sensational results from a single shot could be one of the most significant advances in cancer research in decades. And it almost never happened.

Quote:

In the research published Wednesday, doctors at the University of Pennsylvania say the treatment made the most common type of leukemia completely disappear in two of the patients and reduced it by 70 percent in the third. In each of the patients as much as five pounds of cancerous tissue completely melted away in a few weeks, and a year later it is still gone.
The results of the preliminary test “exceeded our wildest expectations,” says immunologist Dr. Carl June a member of the Abramson Cancer Center's research team.
Dr. Edgar Engleman, a cancer immunologist at Stanford University School of Medicine who was not involved in the research calls the results “remarkable ... great stuff.”

Quote:

Doctors had told Bill Ludwig, one of the research volunteers, that he would die from his leukemia within weeks. Then he got the experimental treatment a year ago.
With tears welling up, he told NBC, "I'm more closer to the people I love and I appreciate them more... I'm getting emotional... the grass is greener and flowers smell wonderful."

This is by far the largest advancement man has made in the fight against cancer. My grandfather died of it when he was only 35 (before I was born).

"Programming" the white blood cells to attack cancer tissue has always been an idea in the fight against cancer, but this study has shown the most successful results, and has given hope to a lot of people.

I say awesome. Also note that it was possible by charity. So, if you were ever one to throw a dollar in a charity bucket somewhere, you're helping the situation with cancer.

This is a great first news article to read when you wake up :D

Wow. I doubt it's a cure for all cancer, but, hell, leukemia sucks.

If this works the same way on most other people then it's just... unbelievable. Who would have thought such a thing would be beatable just by an injection? This is only the beginning. if they can beat Laeukemia then other cancers can't be far off. Once they beat cancer, they can have more people dedicated to finding an absolute cure for HIV/AIDS. This news is just great. One less disease out their to be frightened of catching.

this really is great news, since before this, leukemia was one of the harder cancers to fight, because there are no solid tumors to target.
list of canon sources:

the DB manga, and the Dr. Slump manga as it applies to the crossover during the rra saga.

list of non canon sources:

everything else, regardless of origin, format, or quality.

This is really interesting, i can't wait until the "cure" is tested on a larger group of people, as well as people with other kinds of Cancer.

Nice this is great news. If we can cure this type of cancer then soon others types will be curable, then after that people would be closer to curing other things! This is great!

That is a huge step in the fight against Cancer.

I mean lets face it, leukemia is easily one of the dangerous cancer types, and that there is now some sort of 'help' against it, is quite amazing.

Honestly, it's pretty sweet. Hopefully it comes out with a high cure rate. That's just simply cool. I never thought I'd see a cure for cancer until I was an old man. Certainly not now.

Nope. Chemotherapy isn't an absolute cure. Sometimes it doesn't do the job, nor can it remove all kinds of cancer. Plus it's horrible.

Cue the conspiracy theories on YouTube in 3,2,1....

EDIT: If this works then that will be amazing. I knew a little girl who had cancer but she managed to get over it. What a trooper. Hopefully this could change lives.

Chemo isn't a cure, its a therapy.

Chemo though has terrible side-effects.

1) Chemo can't see the difference between a healthy cell and a cancer cell.

2) Chemo lowers the red and white blood cell count.

3) Chemo due to their rather raw 'curing' method, gives the patient hair loss, and fatigue.

4) And the worst part is probably, the loss of hunger, and the vomiting.

It's a terrible curing method, but it's better then nothing.

This is amazing! Never thought I'd see a cure for decades. If this is successful, it'll lead to a massive leap in medical success and they can further their research of other very dangerous things, other types of cancer and STDs for example. Hope it ends up having a decent cure rate once tested on a larger group of people.
