This topic could really relate to anything, from DBZ to sports or anything else completely unrelated. Basically, do you parents/friends shun you or just don't understand something that you really enjoy? From my perspective, my parents seem to hate the fact that I love English and writing, and that I'm really into "nerdy" things like Star Wars and anime. My mom keeps trying to force me into the medical field even though I love to write and draw, just because she doesn't understand it, and because she wants me to make a lot of money. And just today, my parents seemed peeved because a package came into the mail today that included some anime DVDs. They think it's stupid that I would "waste" my money on stuff like that. They think it's weird, so they don't like it, even though they have never given it a try. They have hobbies too, so I don't get why they never seem to understand my hobbies of writing and collecting. It's very unfair. My friends think it's a bit weird, but they support me. My parents don't even go that far. But what about you guys? Do your parents, friends, or anyone else shun you because of what you like? Do they just not seem to try to understand (or even care) about your interests and hobbies? |

Yeah, I know what you mean. It seems as though my parents disapprove of my hobby of watching anime because : 1. It's not the hobby of the ''generic teenager'' 2. It's not one of their hobbies 3. It's a ''waste of money'' I hope your parents become more accepting of your likes and hobbies

I don't have this problem at all. My parents are very supportive of whatever ambition I follow. They might not think it's the best way for me to go sometimes, and they're usually right. But that doesn't stop them from helping me achieve my goals as best they can. They don't care about my hobbies, they know it's entirely up to me what I enjoy. But college and career wise, they give me guidance. They're fully supportive of my decision to study music. Which is great. |

My friends watch anime so they're cool with me doing it. My mom doesn't really care when I buy manga or when I order a package (she knows its none of her business so she doesn't care.) My Dad gets all pissy when I want to order a game thats $60 or an anime. If I'm paying $60 for Lost Season 6 or a $100 turntable thats fine  Seriously he thinks oh what's that cartoon ***** stop wasting your money but If its something he likes its ok. Main reason why I want to buy pre paid cards for online shopping. I don't even watch anime in the living room unless they're out of the house. I guess some people just don't understand. I choose the path of just not even telling my family anything about me to overcome this Whenever I get a DBZ game they're like what? Why do you like that it's a stupid cartoon. Shut up, you're a stupid human being. I don't see the problem with anime ok understandable with the dodgy kind off ecchi and hentai stuff but alot of anime teaches people values, better than the rest of the stuff on TV, what use is it for us to watch things like Jersey Shore so we can become idiots like them whos only morals are not to sleep with fat people? Anime ftw |

They know I like games/cartoons as such. Aside from that they don't give a ***** really. They've actually watched DBZ with me a number of times which was hilarious because they were like "Why is that man Green" and "Why let the young child fight that big green monster" They'll enjoy watching basic classic cartoons like Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry, etc but outside of that it's "Change to CNN. I want to hear the news". |

I would never watch anime in the living room. Then again I don't watch anything in the living room. My dad is sporty, always wanted me to be sporty. I didn't like sports lol. I could like some sports, but in general I don't like sports. Now I watch some sports so am more interested, but back in the day I didn't even watch any sports. My dad took me to go for a run when I was like 5 or 6 in some park/field....got chased by a dog 1 time lol that was fun(sarcasm btw lol). And later on at 1 point when I was 10 I went for a run round my block because he wanted me to, felt stupid going past the same houses again and again and seeing the same kids playing on the street, and otherwise I wasn't allowed off my street with friends so wth? My dad isn't really like me too much in terms of his interests certainly, and he wasn't when he was a kid either. Oh yeh my parents aren't really down with the music I used to listen to, even though they didn't really know what I listened to at all, they just made assumptions and told other people that's what I was into lol. Not so big a deal since I'll be leaving pretty soon anyway. My friends are fine. You choose your friends so yeh it's likely they'll be fine. Extended family vary, not that I'm amazingly close with my extended family but I have some idea of what they like/are like. |

*sigh* no one seems to understand why I love Cell so much. Everyone just gives me a weird look and points out that he's a bug. I also have this problem with other fictional characters I like... Why does no one understand? D= |

I put headphones on when I'm on the computer. When I order a package I check the mail before them. When I get something from Best Buy a friend usually drives me home. Like I said before I only watch in the living room when they're gone or only when my bros home. Don't know If this would fit but my mom got all pissy when she found out I was Atheist. I doubt my dad would care he would prob say something like believe whatever you want. |

Really? That sucks. When I was a kid I used to look at bugs and stuff including ladybirds which are beetles and nobody minded. |

Yeah it'sannoying when parents want you to be like them Where's originality? He's never said it but I can tell my dad is disappointed with me he lives half the country away don't see him much He was really sporty got a medal for pretty much every sport you can do, I only ever played sports in school and even then I never tried cracking my fingers was much more of an interest to me I actualy get looked down on kinda because I'm not a womanizing ***** I care nothing for sex at all people just look at me funny, it's for making babies if I ever bother that's what it will be for I don't get the pointless obsession with it it's beyond pathetic I don't like to watch anime in the living room either I hate being questioned about it it's actualy really annoying I don't question people for watching their crap why can't I watch some japanese stuff? Educational in a way I recognise some japanese now  I was always singled out as the weird kid because I used to go away by myself and play with swords/sticks and be a ninja! Most fun I've ever had ever, being a child was awesome Should try having a "sword" fight with me, I will win Picked alot of skills up from my "weird" lifestyle haha |

I'm not posting about my parents. But my friends usually support me with my kickboxing training and fights so that's great of them. It always helps to have one of them watching you, cheering you on. I never got this. Nobody really knows I like anime. My girlfriends in work most of the time, so I guess that's something that bothers me. She's been abroad now for weeks. Man, it's a bummer. |

I was the creator of the anime club at my school. It's still running last I checked. But no one remembers me for that. So it doesn't really matter. There were a lot of people who didn't understand why I liked certain things, compared to other people my age. They still don't. And they never will. But i'm going to keep on keepin' on. Heh, I can sort of relate to you. It's happened to me quite a few times where I put something together, and I never get any credit for it. It can really suck. Especially when you put time and effort into something to please other people, and they don't even remember you for it. It's just.... Ugh. |
