Dragon Ball Z Kai Overall Review So now that Kai is near its end, I thought it would be a good time to write down my overall thoughts of the series – a sort of mini review, I guess. I'll probably be turning this into a review on Youtube sometime soon, so I'll post the link here when I do. This will be a pretty long, in-depth discussion, so if you don't feel like reading it all, you can always type up your own thoughts about the show and post it as a response. I won't be hurt if you don't read every bit of this post. ![]() As a side note, I'm reviewing the English dub of the series, not the Japanese version. Also, in case you were wondering, Dragon Ball Z Kai is scheduled to end after the Cell Games Saga. There will apparently be no Buu Sagas in America, because the show was cancelled for ambiguous reasons in Japan. I still haven't quite figured that one out yet. It's disappointing, because the Buu Sagas were my favorite, but I guess it's not that bad. It could have been worse. They could have randomly cut off the series in mid-saga, so I'm grateful they didn't do anything drastic like that. Now, onto the actual “review...” Voice Changes in Kai: 4/5 There were several changes made for Kai that immediately turned a few hardcore DBZ fans away from the new series, one of those being the dreaded voice cast changes, which weren't at all as bad as they were made out to be. A true “purist” DBZ fan might condone these changes right away simply because they don't want to see the series they love be re-dubbed and changed. But those kind of fans are overlooking one very obvious truth: the voice cast changes weren't bad. Actually, they were very good – spot-on, even. In a lot of ways, while some of the voice changes weren't spectacular or any better than the original, some were actually far superior to the original dub. So for all of you fans out there who hate the voice changes simply for the sake of hating them, think again. ![]() One example of a superior voice replacement was for Frieza. I'm not going to get too detailed with this. If you want to, look it up or read a review elsewhere, but basically, the Frieza in the original dub sucked big time compared to the Frieza from the manga and Japanese anime. He was simply nothing at all like he was meant to be. It was sad – so sad – that the English dub ruined such a good villain. The Kai dub gave him some justice. The voice fit the character better; it gave Frieza more malice, and it made him more of a villain than he ever was in the original. It's the truth. Take it or leave it. Other noticeable voice replacements included Gohan, Bulma, and Android 18. Don't kill me if I forgot any major ones. This is strictly opinion, but I believe that the voice replacements for these characters did a great job. Gohan actually sounded more like a child, Bulma was fine (there's really no need to worry about her in this series), and while the new Android 18 sounded completely different from the former one, it was a good change. I actually like the way the new voice actress portrayed her – a seemingly sweet and innocent Android who's ready to kick butt at a moment's notice. In a lot of ways, it's a better representation of her character. The Music: 4.5/5 There was plenty of scandal concerning the soundtracks in Kai. To sum it up, the composer of Kai's music allegedly stole some of his work from hit movie soundtracks and the company fired him from the project. I won't talk about that much here. Instead, I'll skip on to what I thought of the original music in Kai before it was changed to the old Japanese score. Overall, I liked it. It was a good change, and one that represented the whole tone and feel of DBZ very well. It sounded sort of like the old Japanese score, but more modernized and dramatic. Some fans absolutely loved it, others didn't like it either because it wasn't what they were used to, or because they didn't feel like it properly represented the feel of DBZ. I disagree with them. While I love both the old Japanese and English dub music scores, I loved Kai's just as much. It was different in a good way. When Kai's music was replaced by the original Japanese score, it seemed a little odd and out of place at first, but I eventually got used to it. I wish they would have kept the original Kai music, though. The Acting: 5/5 To sum it all up, the acting in Kai was amazing – far superior to the old English dub. There's no denying that fact, and it's a fact that many fans (both lovers and haters of Kai) can agree on. The actors have gotten older, they have far more experience than when they first started recording Z, and the new actors are great as well. The new acting made me cringe a lot less when watching the show, and I'm grateful for that. The Pacing: 4/5 Kai is pretty much like the original Z, but with no filler. This made the series so much more enjoyable on so many levels. No more worrying about stupid, meaningless things like dinosaurs and Mr. Satan (well, not entirely). While some fans wish that they would have left in some filler episodes, doing that would have contradicted the initial purpose of Kai to begin with – no filler. This means no driving test episode. Get over it. The story did seem to go by a little too fast, though. It seemed like fight after fight after fight, with no breaks in between, which is essentially what it was, but it was kind of too fast for me. Wish they would have slowed it down just a little bit. Why Does No One Seem to Like Kai? It's a question I've been wondering ever since I first got into the series. At first, I was turned off by it as well. When I first saw the previews for Kai and the first few episodes, I was thinking to myself, “What the crap? They're redoing Z? This is gonna be a complete disaster. I'm never gonna watch that trash. That's so stupid.” But then when I actually watched the show – and I mean actually watched it – I began to realize just how great it is. It's better than the original. Sorry if I offend anyone by saying that, but it is. The only reason I can think of that some people don't like Kai is that it's not what they're used to, so they won't give it a real chance. And that really blows, because it's a fantastic series. I just wish it would get the full appreciation it deserves. It's superior in every way to the original. Don't get me wrong, though. I love the old English dub. I love it a lot. But I'm still willing to admit that Kai topped it. Overall, Kai deserves a 4.5/5. Edited by Doggo Champion 2k17, Jul 31 2011, 02:48 AM.

Nice review! I like how they tried to make 18 sexy like the Japanese version. I was kind of upset about the music too but I eventually got used to it. Now Funi is releasing the show in 26 episode box sets with the Kikuchi score. Its a shame people here don't like Kai that much. It would of been cool to have a talkback for the Nicktoons airings. |

Thanks, Ani! And wow, I didn't know that the seasons sets would have the original score on them. Do you mean that Kikuchi's score would be in all of the episodes, or just the episodes that they originally aired in? Thanks for that info. Yeah, that would've been neat!

Yeah Kikuchi will be in all of the episodes so now you can have a consistent release. Im not going to purchase it though since I feel Kai was meant to be heard with Yamamoto. That and I don't like repurchasing stuff. You can preorder here- Blu-Ray DVD |

Thanks! Mind telling me where you found out that they would have the original score? I'd like to know so I can post it in the Announcements thread I made earlier.

Thanks, that was helpful! I'll be posting that in my other thread. I'd rather have Yamamoto's score on all of the sets, so I guess I'm not going to be buying these... lol! |

Really nice review, it highlighted all the things I love about the show that I would be too lazy to write about on the internet. I actually got introduced to Dragon Ball through Dragon Ball Z Kai. I AM FIERCELY DEVOTED TO THIS SHOW. |

Nice Review! I agree, Kai/Z Kai gets a lot of undeserved hate just because it changed some things up. Love the new voice cast except Gohan. I can appreciate that he sounds like more of a kid now but I think that's one of the only occasions where I like the older DBZ Dub vioces more than the newer voices. |

I still prefered the old voice actors for Gohan, Bulma, and 18. I also preferred Bruce Faulconer just because I didn't like the japanese audio or kai's. I just really preferred the original. I really wish they had an option in the Orange bricks to turn off filler though. I think I might put the orange bricks onto my computer and just edit the filler myself and fix some other things like less mr satan and reduce times for power ups. But I guess we just have different opinions though, when are you going to put your review up? I might watch it. |

I don't like the new voices personally... The only improvement I like from Kai over original DBZ is the Gohan turning SSJ2 scene, I felt no past version had that scene with the right music, until Japanese Kai. Original Kai had great music but I really don't like the series too much... |

This is going to sound strange. When I first heard Kai I thought the English dub was made by fans! lol. Then I see the same version being sold in stores. I wouldn't buy it at all. But I really like how they took out the fillers! |
