The gun that won that old Wild West

I made a thread or two about whether I should go to highschool (9th grade) awhile ago and my mom and I decided that I am going to actually go, but the school said I must take a placement test before I can enroll in the school. The thing is, their going to have Algebra and Geometry and stuff like that on the test. I haven't been to a public school since 6th grade in the elementary back in 2008, I've only done homeschool and one very *****ty private school half a year in the 7th grade, and I've never had to do algebra or geometry and I'm worried I won't be able to past the test. All these people that have been to high school talk about classes like Economics, Biology, physics, etc. When I was in the 6th grade we had History, Math, Science, Social Studies and Language. That was it. P.E. wasn't even graded, all we did in P.E. was roll around on scooters, dance or maybe play with legos. High school seems like a very dramatic change from 5 subjects and playing with legos... What should I do? Start studying my ***** off for algebra and geometry? And actually, even though I'm terrible at math, I did do some algebra questions and some of them honestly seemed quite easy but others I down right didn't understand, for example - (16x +10x+10) (6x + 6x + 11) I'm not sure that's even a valid question, but you get my point. Well if it's a placement test doesn't that mean they're seeing how much you know now and will place you in classes according to what you know? I agree math can be a little overwhelming, but algebra is easy once you understand it Take that problem you posted for example. You wouldn't really know how to solve that since you have nothing to check it against. This would probably be easier to solve (16+10+10)= (6x + 11) so it would be 36 = (6x + 11) 36-11 25 = 6x 25/6 4.1 = x so now you know x equals 4.1 it's basically just narrowing down the numbers to find what x would equal but you need something to check yourself against since you're not finding the sum of the problem but a small part of it. |

I've never heard of an entrance exam of high caliber for a high school (with the exception of private schools). I would guess it wont be too difficult, still study though. Of course I'm from one of the "more stupid" states in America so..... Edited by Cal, Jul 24 2011, 03:32 AM.

Even if you do bad on your entrance exam make sure you do well in your actual classes and talk with your guidance counselor from time to time and you should do fine. |

I'm confused. The whole purpose of private school is for you to learn things until you get to high school. In most cases its supposed to prepare you more for high school than public school does. Are you saying you think you didn't learn enough in private school to move up to the next level? Then what was the point of going private? You have to take a placement test so they know which classes to put you in first. Clearly if you didn't know much about algebra, they'd start you off there, and not geometry and advanced algebra. That's all its for. Also because I hate leaving equations unsolved. (16x +10x+10) (6x + 6x + 11) = 312x^2 + 406x + 110 = { X(1) = -0.384615 , X(2) = -0.916667 } Real Distinct Roots |

Well, I was going through a bit of a difficult time in my life then (not really, just unstable). I skipped out on half a year of school and they put me in this private school that was really nothing more than some kind of weird church/bible school. This private school sucked, it was full of racist rednecks and every few lines in any subject mentioned something about "God". I really don't want to think about it, I try to pretend it never happened. It was a school for sheltered kids with close-minded parents that didn't want their kids exposed to the real world. I feel sorry for those poor kids that have to go to that pathetic school for the rest of their school life and brain-washed by those insane people. On the up side there were some pretty hot girls there. Super religious families but didn't mind their daughters wearing tight pants and make-up. Oh, and the school was only from like 8 A.M.-2 P.M. Mondays-Wednesdays, really it was a joke. |

I've never heard of placement tests for high school. But surely the placement test will contain more than just algebra and geometry? As had already been mentioned though, this test appears to be more about finding out how much you know, and place in you in the most suitable classes, so I wouldn't stress too much over it. |
