So what do you guys think so far of the upcoming Wii successor known only as "Project Cafe"?

The news is everywhere now.

Sources tell IGN that Nintendo will release a pre-announcement this month with a full reveal expected at E3. Sources say the console will be backwards compatible with current Wii software.

http://wii.ign.com/a.../1161875p1.html

RUMOR - Multiple sources confirm new Nintendo console, HD visuals with a late 2012 launch, devs already at work, E3 reveal

Gonintendo still has the rumor tag.

The following information comes from Game Informer...

- new system is capable of running games at HD resolutions
- system may either fall short of or surpass 360/PS3 in graphics, but it will be competitive
- Nintendo is already showing publishers the system
- late 2012 launch
- no word on backwards compatibility
- no word on 'Wii' being in the name
- when Nintendo was approached with this information, they were told that Nintendo won't comment on their E3 plans, but "stay tuned"

"Nintendo is doing this one right. [It's] not a gimmick like the Wii." - anonymous source

We're also hearing the same sort of information from another source. The only major difference between the two articles is discussion of another new controller.

Just yesterday Nintendo made an official announcement confirming all the rumors.

Re: Wii’s successor system

Nintendo Co., Ltd. has decided to launch in 2012 a system to succeed Wii,
which the company has sold 86.01 million units on a consolidated shipment
basis between its launch in 2006 and the end of March 2011.

We will show a playable model of the new system and announce more
specifications at the E3 Expo, which will be held June 7-9, 2011, in Los
Angeles.

Sales of this new system have not been included in the financial forecasts
announced today for the fiscal term ending March 2012.

The new control scheme seems to be one with a mix of the old GC Controller with a HD Screen on it.

I think it looks like a splendid idea. Is it touch screen as well? Or just motion censored?

I think it's physically a bit too bulky so I can see some redesign after the first launch.

I find the screen on the controller intriguing, and I'm wondering how it might be incorporated to make games fun. I mean its going to be hard to look at a controller then the tv and back and forth, but I'm sure they can figure out something cool to do with it, guess we are still seeing evolution in gaming.

All the controller pics are just mock-ups at this point, but yeah it's supposed to have a HD screen on the controller that has touch screen capability's. I would imagine it'd be used for maybe for stuff like Zelda where you could have the inventory screen on it and tap the item you want to equip, so you wouldn't have to keep pausing the game to change items. It could also have stuff like maps on it, or the rumours might be true and it just streams the TV's footage to the controller.

Miyamoto said in an interview the other day Nintendo is going back to real gaming and trying to capture the western audience, and with all their new hardware developed (3DS and this console have been in development for years) they're going to be putting all their effort into software, aka games.

MS and Sony have also announced they arn't going to release their next consoles until at least 2014, and this console is said to be more powerful then the PS3, so Nintendo's pretty much got the floor for the next few years. They're showing the console to the game developers now because they don't have to worry about Microsoft or Sony stealing ideas from the console as it'll be out by the time MS and Sony are developing their next consoles.

I'm actually considering buying this. Looks like a nice piece of technology. Great idea.

Does anyone think similar to this theory?

During the NIntendo Gamecube era, Nintendo was struggling to recapture the market. Although not an exact failure, it was a turn-off to many core gamers who preferred the Xbox and PlayStation 2. Knowing that if they continued this path that they would go third-party or out of business, Nintendo made the Wii to establish not only market dominance, but to also make themselves home to some of the best library ever made (By that I mean the next console, not referring to the Wii, which I still think is a very good system).

I think there were two steps made. One is the Wii, which turned out to be a monumental success. The other is the next console, which I see as Nintendo's huge effort to recapture the core audience. Basically, the Wii was an experiment and a huge donation to the next console.

What? No.

The Wii's library was/is the weakest one there is. People purchase the Wii for gameplay and for the selected first party titles that are remakes on every Nintendo System to date.

The Wii has a lack of third party support, and that's one of the promises that Nintendo made for this new console. They said that they were going to try to surprise people with a "good" 3rd party launch list. I doubt it's true. Although, they do have time to "hog" developers to themselves considering MS and Sony are obviously on a 10 year plan and are not even considering a new console because there is so much potential left with the ones they have now.

I could destroy this false statement in so many ways.....

You do realize that Nintendo is known for exclusives and the Wii was targeted toward non gamers just as much as gamers?

That being said to go along with the FEW exclusives you get you can add a bunch of 3rd party titles that completely flopped because:

*Nintendo's online is the worst of the 3 and big titles like CoD makes their bread from online play
*All cross platform games sell the worst on the Wii.

Nintendo Wii's top 12 sellers since launch are all first party games. It's hard to say it has a good library when it's centered around themselves and not other developers.

I could go on but I wont....
