Yes the kaio ken only strains it if you don't do it right or push your self too high for a while, once you mastered it then it is ok and it won't strain the body.

He has mastered it to the extent that normal tri-beams have no effect on his life span.
The tri-beam technique used against Cell damaged him because it was extremely powerful and was repeated over and over.
