Yeh that's just because funimation or whichever thought dbz would do better in the USA because it's more focused on action.

when i think anime and other japanese culture being successful outside japan, its the usa that comes to mind. dbz is successful in america for the same reason nearly all popular games there are high action big budget shooters.

'happy' is not cool in america, 'angry' is cool in america, hence why dbz is more popular than dragonball. here ill show you a picture example.

see the left one is the japanese kirby and the right one is the 'american' kirby. i personally think kirby is just awesome, and the japanese one is way better. but the general mindset over there is that the left one is 'lame', and dragonball is 'lame' just because it tries to be a little quirky.

now thats not everyone, im sure there are americans here that appreciate dragonball and such, but really i see it as a vast majority. of course dbz is still a great anime/manga, but i like dragonball a little better. and i like them both for different reasons.

i live in australia and its the same deal really, most people would prefer cod over a quirky japanese game(like seriously 90%+). its just a general western mindset that explosions, zombies and guns are the most awesome thing.

It takes a mere second for treasure to turn to trash.

Yeah, I've never seen Dragonball but I would have to say DBZ is probably not as funny in comparison. DBZ had its moments, though, I especially loved some of Vegeta's lines in the manga.
WoW Legion Ending - Thank you Darker for making this into one, big incredible gif! <3

Dragonball had it's dramatic and angry moments. I'll say for what it was worse Dragonball was more angry and dramatic than DBZ just because there was so much less science fiction involved, and more mature themes outspoken. Such as *romance and death at the hands of someone rather than to his laser beam. I mean a Ki wave. Although by romance I don't just mean seeing two people together in a relationship which happened many times in DBZ if not very briefly. I mean the actually highlights of a romance such as Bulma and Yamcha, which ran consistently for the entire series. It's not one big deal although a small thing that didn't make the series boring.

yeah i agree dragonball's more raw, and does have some real anger/emotion especially in the piccolo saga. but it doesnt really have the boom/crash explosive action of dbz, which is probably a better example. i appreciate the comedy/adventure aspects of dragonball alot.

i like the story of dbz a lot though. especially the first time you watch it its really enthralling to see what will happen. i loved how there wore more than 2 competing parties on namek, i thought that was awesome. and when the androids were the main villians, it was intrigiung how a side story of an empty shell took over. and even though the boo saga wasnt as good, i was wondering how the hell spopovich and supreme kai had anything to do with eachother the first time i watched it. there just general examples i liked from each saga.

though i dont think that story is why dbz is so popular...

Of course not. It was the fast-paced bone-crushing action, lol!

I think like someone said there's a certain sense of humor you have to have for DBZ. I laugh out loud at it just as much as Dragonball. The situations in DBZ are funny but not as directly or intentionally comedic as in Dragonball.
