I hope this is the correct section for this :p

I'm just inquiring as to whether Windows Vista 32 bit can utilise all 8 Gigabytes of RAM or whether it is bottlenecked at around 6-7. The reason for asking is that when I ran a scan of my PC on this website to check which RAM was compatible, it said that unless I had Windows Vista 64 bit then I would only use part of the RAM instead of the full 8. I just want to be doubly sure of this. Sorry if this is in the wrong place. :)

My computer is a Dell XPS 420. The motherboard model is also Dell. It supports DDR2 dual channels.

It says here your pc can only go to 4GB. Are we sure we are looking at the same model?

Mine must be slightly different because I have a Q8200, 2.33 ghz processor and not a Q6600 2.4 ghz. Plus the scan I did said it supported 8gb.

Well you'll know when you put in 8gb, and your computer specs says you only have 4gb. Or it wont work.

Regardless, to answer your question, you're correct when it says you won't use the full 8gb with a 32 bit OS processing.
Honestly you will probably never run into a situation where you will use all 8gb. What will happen is the processor will allocate memory in all 4 chips among all 8gb of ram. You'll never get to a point where you'll fill up all 8gb. And if you do, you'll notice the pc freezing up trying to dump memory and store more. The idea is, that a 64bit processing system utilizes more ram because it crosses its processing power amongst more data. Therefore it uses more ram to run.
Where you'll see the difference is, in programs that use a lot of memory. You'll notice it become smoother as it runs. A 64bit system utilizes the ram more efficiently regardless. The amount of computing lag that you get on a 64bit system compared to a 32bit system is night and day visually.

Most programs that tell you to upgrade to 64x vista or win7 just want you to go out and buy it because everyone wins in the money market when you do, and yes it is better. But is it worth it? Nah. Not worth it at this point. Keep what you have and wait till your next PC.

Cheers. My computer is recogonising that 8gb is installed and CPUZ backs that up. I am seriously thinking about upgrading to Windows 7 now. But first I need to get a new TV since mines broke. Thanks again for the advice.
