I was wondering if anyone here was a fan of older rpg's. I grew up playing the turn-based rpg's for the SNES and absolutely love games like Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, and Super Mario RPG. I'm just curious if anyone else liked the older games. I don't care about graphics, I'd rather have a game with horrible graphics that's fun to play than a game that looks really good but is boring. |

Yesss I loved played Earthbound when I was little. We used to rent it lol I also played a lot of Zelda: Link to the Past and Donkey Kong Country lol My friend doesn't like playing games unless they have good graphics, which I think is sad cause he's missing out on a lot of awesome games for a pretty petty reason |

Yeah, I have a lot of friends like that too. And it's a shame because even for its time Earthbound was kind of lacking in the graphics department, but it's still probably my all time favorite game. Even though I've been known to use an emulator here and there, I still have my SNES hooked up and I still have Earthbound, Zelda LTTP, and the Donkey Kong Country games with it. I always liked Earthbound because instead of your typical "middle ages, sword and shield" rpg, you used baseball bats and frying pans. Instead of herbs to heal you had to eat hamburgers and pizzas, and it was the only game I've ever played where one of the status effects involves you "acting strange" because a mushroom is growing on your head. |

I don't understand how people can call it 'bad graphics' though. I mean, sure, they're not FF13, but they fit the style of the game and I think that's way better than having up to-date graphics. So I've never really considered Earthbound and Chrono Trigger and such to have bad graphics cause they just seemed to go with the game and enhance it. |

I don't think Earthbound was ever released outside of Japan and the U.S so I never heard of it until Super Smash Bros. I am a fan of the old school RPG's though. Particularly the really large ones with no visible boundries like Final Fantasy. You could easily get lost and end up walking into an area full of level 50 monsters when you're only lvl 20. Very hard.

Cell Fangirl-yeah I agree that the graphics go with the game, and since Earthbound was a funny game, the "bad" graphics really enhanced the gameplay. Unfortunately, a lot of people judge it for being "behind its time." And I think Chrono Trigger looks amazing for a SNES game. I even like Tecmo Secret of the Stars and it's a really basic game with basic graphics. I guess I just like the idea of going on a quest, and I like turn-based games because I think it takes more strategy when you have to think each move through. Most of my friends think they move too slowly, but I prefer to have time to think about my battle strategies. Pelador-Yeah I like the games without many boundaries too, Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior come to mind. And yeah Earthbound was a HUUUUGE hit in Japan, but when it got ported to the U.S. it didn't sell well at all. I think that might be why it wasn't released outside of Japan and the U.S. It had a resurgence with Super Smash Bros, and it has a good cult following(and an entire website devoted to it) but these games just don't seem to get the respect they deserve. |

Yeah..I really liked Chrono Trigger's story, and the fact that you could pick which characters to use in your party..among all the other things that made it so great. It's one of the few rpg's I liked that wasn't actually turn based. I wish I still had my copy of it because its worth a lot of money..even more than Earthbound, which goes for at least $50 used. Well at least there's emulators(and a DS version). I also liked Chrono Cross(the sequel to Chrono Trigger that came out on the playstation) but it wasn't as good as Trigger imo. |

Chrono Trigger is alright I guess. Not much on the story or gameplay though. :P Too...bland for my tastes as far as RPGs goes (if we;re talking in comparison to LUNAR, etc.) I loved the old Zelda games, especially Link to the Past. <3 Also, Lunar for the Saturn. Ys and Mother are also good. My favourite would be Star Ocean for the famicom in terms of roleplaying games. Most GOOD RPGs didnt come until the PS era though. |

list of canon sources: the DB manga, and the Dr. Slump manga as it applies to the crossover during the rra saga. list of non canon sources: everything else, regardless of origin, format, or quality. for those that blindly follow word of god | |

is it final fantasy? haha just kidding. Yeah Lunar was awesome, and the playstation era rpg's were great as well. I really liked Legend of Legaia and Wild Arms just to name a couple. Even though I love the Dragon Quest games, Dragon Warrior 7 was wayy too long. I think it took me over 100 hours to complete(with help from a guide). There are so many good rpg's from back in the day. Lucky for me, a video game store just opened next to the comic book store I'm picking up some DBZ manga from and the video game store only sells used games and they have a nice selection of older rpg's. I already got my SNES up and working again..I think its time to dust off the Playstation too. |

@LUNAR 2 - Zophar made that game effing sexy. I loved his sense of humour. :P And yet he still came across as totally evil. I liked LUNAR 1 better in terms of most other characters, like Nash <3 but I liked Zophar better as a villain than Ghaleon. (though I loved that throng of women who worked under him xD what were they called again?) "Ghaloeon is my love studmuffin!" or something of that sort. I loved the dialogue of those games. |

Yeah I really miss old school rpg's, for some reason I am a huge fan of overworlds. I know most people find them annoying, but it made it seem like everything was more grand in scale. |

yeah I know what you mean Everything seems sort of...linear when there's no overworld. FF13 does a really bad job at this x__x I like how they do it in Dragon Quest 8. It's immersed, but you can still explore ever nook and cranny of the map, even go up hills and such. I thought it all worked really well with DQ8 The Dragon Quest games have always been good about this I believe. Dragon Quest 5, for SNES, is really one of my favorite games |
