You are calm and reposed, let your beauty unfold

I want to get into boxing, so I'm on the prowl for any local clubs or any of that jazz. But I was hoping for any advise for training, any nuggets of information about the sport or... well anything you'd be willing to share with me on the subject. Cheers.

Great news. Well i can share with you some of my own knowledge. You need to train, i think you are aware of that. For every sport i would recommend running at least jogging or actual running, to get your endurance up, so you aren´t out of breath after five minutes of moving or punching. If its cold and or there is to much snow on the ground i would also recommend the jump rope which is sometimes even better then running, you should use both to get an great outcome. I would also say that you should join a boxing-gym, were you get trained professionally. And don´t eat junk-food. I would say you should PM BattleMetal who is himself a boxer, he would give you much more information then i can give you.
Once upon a time, there used to be a signature. Then it got lame, and now I'm out of options for a new one.

Jogging. That is a definite must. Stretch out your arms, and do alot of hard practicing on a heavy punch - bag. Try a speed ball as well, then can be helpful. When it comes to sparring or fighting, throw punches, and then duck. Usually when you throw the first punches, your opponent or sparring partner will wait until you're done attacking to hit back. So when you throw punches, duck when you're finished. Pick your punches and pace yourself. Don't go all - out when you don't need to, or can't.

Keep yourself fit, do some cardio exercises. Also sit ups, push ups, burties, and many other exercises will help. Even some light circuit training will help.

Oi oi!

Try for 20/30 minute runs along flat surfaces and uphills, set a realistic pace and add in some 5/10 second sprints every so often. rember to gently stretch your legs before and after.
Remember to BREATH- this is a basic but very important part- before you start breath through your nose as deep as you can, liftin your arms above your head, then exhale all of the air out of your lung and swing your arms down- repeat this 5 times- this will stretch out your lungs and envigorate your body, keeping it fueled- do this after your run too.
When running breath in your nose, out mouth- to make it harder and realistic for a fight breath in/out at ALL times through nose. V important.
Running will develop your leg strength and lung capacity and you mental endurance.

Join a local boxing gym, wear training gear and try to wear some Handwraps, these are an essential part as they help cover your knuckles and most important help your wrists deal with the strain of the constant impact of your punches.
Relax and have fun with it but take it serious too (commitment wise).

You shouldnt have to spar the first wee while you are their as the coaches will scope out your ability; fitness (strength, endurance, cardio etc) and technique (timing, speed, power, flat footed or on your toes etc) and nature wise (boxer, fighter, run when hit or fight back harder when hit etc)-
They will understand this best when your on the pads, shadow boxing and on the bags.

Be humble but be game too, question things but take what you learn into account too and use what you can.
You probably wont get it all first time (the footwork, the body posture, the head movement, the angles, when to attack when to step back etc)- its a practice sport- so be patient and dont rush things.

Thanks for all the advise you guys. :D

I'm sorry to say there aren't many local boxing clubs, but there is one that I may be able to join in a nearby town. In the meantime, I plan to take up jogging again, and start other cardio workouts, and basic weight training. So I'll focus on that part until I can get anything else sorted out. Thanks again.

that's great advice. I like your idea of setting a realisitic pace then adding various 15 second sprints throughout your jog. Usually I jog and increase my speed as the run goes on until eventual my legs are warmed up and my adrenaline kicks in and i continue running as fast as I can, or I use a hill for momentum and run down the hill and continue running all the way back home.

I started out very heavy and stiff on my feet, especially my feet. I would always have a tight stance and my foot positioning was stiff. So I tied rope around my legs to keep my stance from breaking during some sessions on the bag, and I started with the jumping rope. A jumping rope is the most important excersise. It gets your body loose, and is very effective for combat sports, not only boxing. Start off with very simple jumps, you dont even have to worry about speed yet, and dont let ur feet drop to the floor, gracefully make your feet land, with the tips land before the heel, again dont make your heel crash on the floor. keep jumping for 10-15 minutes

Ive started doing 10 seconds sprints from the start of my run now before relaxing into a jog then repeating it few mins after and so on... its tricky cuss thats when you are at your strongest so your body wants to run hard ALL the time, you feel like you can but realistically you will gas if you set such a hard pace for 3/6 miles (you will puff after a couple minutes...) this is where you learn to mature and be in control, knowing your own limitations then challenging them.

I was always very flat-footed in boxing, i sparred bigger guys so i think i just fought like they did without realising, im 10stone sparring a guy who out-weighs me by 2stone+. Think i boxed more like a heavyweight haha
I started running on only the balls of my feet, this helped give me added spring in my footwork.

Its a shock when id spar guys my own size or smaller and they would be zippy and dance all over... Id be like WTF as im walking flat-footed and they dont stay still long enough for me to pop of my heavier-shots... needless to say i adapted and started barraging them with constant punches, light fast but consistant work...
pressuring them and not giving them time to breath...Varied results though as when you attack you leave yourself open but usually they give in mentally under the assault...

In boxing its good to be able to adapt and change your style if need be but you impose your will, make them fight YOUR fight.
