What exactly is Mr Popo?

Is Mr Popo a Genie? I wish they gave him more of a background story. He rocks. On Legacy of Goku 2 the scouter data said he was an entity. Don't know what that's supposed to mean.

A read somewhere that, yes, Popo is a Genie, or possibly a Djinn since it's an Asian story.

Aren't they the same thing? Except originally I think Djinn were supposed to be evil more often than not. I blame Disney for the misconception.

Yeah, something like that.

Lemme check the DB Wiki.

...just says he's an immortal genie.

Also, he's apparently racist LOL. But I knew that.

He's a black man, stuck in a white man's world.

I don't think he's racist since they've had a few black people in the show and they didn't look like that. Allthough they were admitedly borderline racist.

Black skinned, dim-witted (in the Japanese version), deep voice, big lips, few teeth, and in the role of a slave to the god of their world.

Yep, so borderline! So... subtle.

So cartoons can't be racist? That's like saying books and movies can't be racist.

Of course, I'm just repeating what some people have said. They're like, reading too into it. I find it hilarious.

I don't think he's dimwitted in the Japanese version. Far from it. I can see how at first glance he may appaear to be racist, but when you look at the fact that one of the main bad guys of Dragonball was black and very intelligent then it seems unlikely that another character would be racist.

I'm just saying it's someone else's artistic expression. Who are we to tell them to censor it or change it because we're too sensitive for our own good?

list of canon sources:

the DB manga, and the Dr. Slump manga as it applies to the crossover during the rra saga.

list of non canon sources:

everything else, regardless of origin, format, or quality.

Wait, who's this villain?

I myself find Piccolo to be the black guy in their group too lol.

I hate quoting the DB Wiki, but it's useful lol.

DB Wiki

While Funimation’s English dubbed Mr. Popo speaks complete, highly sophisticated sentences, the Japanese version proves him to be a seemingly primitive figure. His grasp of the common tongue is less than the English-dubbed version makes it out to be, and in addition, the Japanese version has him commonly referring to himself in the third person

Perhaps dimwitted was too strong a word, but he's still quite simple.

He's just more simple than the sophisticated American version. At least he doesn't say stuff like "Popo gotta find some grape juice real soon or there gonna be hell to pay...dayam." That would be racist.

The bad guy I was referring to was Commander Black of the Red Ribbon Army. I liked him. Not a bad fighter.

Oh. I was thinking Killa for some reason. I forgot Commander Black (another racist character LOL, and second only to a ginger no less!). And I call myself a fan :(

...I wonder if Popo likes watermelon?
