Back in DB young son goku got a near death experience after he fought mercenary tao. He was saved and was told about the secrete water in the caves that makes you slightly stronger than before. Well anyways goku beats tao after his new found power boost. Power boost = zenkai power boost (not yet realized) Im not really sure, it was a long time ago.... Correct me if im wrong. 	list of canon sources: the DB manga, and the Dr. Slump manga as it applies to the crossover during the rra saga. list of non canon sources: everything else, regardless of origin, format, or quality. for those that blindly follow word of god
