Nappa powered up to full power at the beginning of Volume 3, and began to fight piccolo and kurirun and gohan etc.

WHEN he powered up, Tien stated "The whole earth is trembling!" and Nappa was shown with electricity around him.

It's just strange; I would think that whenever someone went SSJ on earth (keep in mind that SSJ is thousands of times stronger than Nappa), earth would tremble a bit. But no one cares. Theres no earthquakes anywhere. nothing. no big deal.

But when Nappa powers up, the earth shakes, and he gets the trademark SSJ2 aura. Now, Im not saying he goes SSJ2; but... he gets electricity, and then we dont see it again until the cell saga. It would make sense for AT to give the stronger characters lightning, like maybe full power Freeza, right?

Well, I dont know. Thought it was weird. Discuss?

The only explanation I have is it would have gotten pretty tiresome drawing every character as strong or stronger than Nappa with electricity. And I'm pretty sure we would get sick and tired of hearing about the earth shaking every time someone powered up. I think once they showed how strong Nappa and Vegeta were that kinda set the standard for every character from then on. So we knew that anyone after that was going to be extremely strong so we don't need to know that the earth is shaking.

Do you get me? haha

Yeah, Cooler has a good point.
Once upon a time, there used to be a signature. Then it got lame, and now I'm out of options for a new one.

has anyone ever stopped to think that maybe Trunks just bought his sword somewhere or something? There's nothing really special about it.

Well it did manage to slice Frieza into a shishkebab so it must've been packing more power than your average blade. Hell even Zelda's sword couldn't pull off that ****.

I don't believe in power levels after the Frieza Saga. :D
Now, there's an idea.

It truly was a Shawshank redemption

This happens a lot. They emphasise the power of villains from the beginning by showing that the Earth shakes, one attack destroys a planet or a moon, makes a whole in the Earth etc. Then later on in the series the villains are a lot more powerful, yet these things don't happen.
Toriyama obviously wasn't thinking too far into the story when he was writing/drawing these things, and that's understandable, but it does make for some inconsistencies.

Dragon Ball, having inconsistencies? No way.

I always thought that the effort of getting to the power caused the earth shacking as SSJ could be entred with ease after a while and they just transformed back and forth with out even batting an eye lid

That's an interesting, plausible way to think of it. I'm in favor of Kai's explanation.

I suppose I see what Kai is saying: hey, when Goku went SSJ, namek shook, and there were storms and huge waves everywhere. Thats appropriate. (though not canon? was there lightning and thunder in the manga?)

I think that the fighters fight with bursts of energy, like piccolo explains against Dr. Gero. So, theyre not releasing it all at once. A low class fighter like Nappa ( in regards to all of DBZ ) wouldnt be able to control his power like that, and he'd just let it all out
and shake the earth
so

the answer you guys makes plenty of sense, but I think this does too.

nappa is inefficient with his energy and so makes a big show of it. the flashes and bangs are the sign of someone using more energy than they can effectively control, just as fpssj does not always have aura unless they power up for a fight.
list of canon sources:

the DB manga, and the Dr. Slump manga as it applies to the crossover during the rra saga.

list of non canon sources:

everything else, regardless of origin, format, or quality.

for those that blindly follow word of god
