Crazy Awesome Legend

My understanding of the purpose a school uniform was that it was simply to identify students. However, I felt that it also added an element of discipline to the students. When we would have the odd day where we were allowed to wear ordinary clothing, the students behaviour seemed to be different. More wild and less disciplined. I liked my uniform, at least after they changed it at about year 10. It was rubbish before then. But then they made it more like a proper suit and I felt very comfortable in it. I looked way smarter than my normal clothes. Which I suppose could be another purpose of the uniform. To make the students look less scruffy. Allthough being teenagers it wasn't hard for them to still look like a mess. Anyone else like school uniforms and think they're a good idea? |

I don't like school uniforms. IMO people should wear what ever they desire to wear. In my school they started making us wear a uniform every friday and no one was mostly listening so they screwed that idea. Wearing school uniforms won't make children different from each other they wear the same clothing as each other. This is what I feel is that school uniforms shouldn't be foced in schools. |

I think school uniforms are good for a variety of reasons: 1) You can identify which student belongs to which school. 2) Children won't get bullied if they can't afford the best clothes from the best stores as they're all wearing the same thing. 3) There is no rush for children to start panicking about what they want to wear everyday - Having gone to a college with no uniform, you soon find that some of your regular clothes become a uniform in place of an official school uniform. 4) It teaches students an element of discipline as teachers are able to monitor whether they are adhering to the dress code properly which wouldnt be possible if somebody that dressed like Lady Gaga went to your school. 5) It makes it much more difficult for students to show themselves off because everybody is wearing the same thing. 6) Many school uniforms are designed to be as practical as possible whereas casual outfits are not. 7) It teaches children to take some pride in their appearence by maintaining their school uniform so that they look presentable - even going as far as to groom them for the world of work where they might have to wear suits and ties etc. 8) Your brand new t-shirt or dress can be saved for casual occasions and won't get old so quickly if you have a seperate outfit for school. Obviously there are drawbacks to some of these points but on the whole its just easier to have a uniform due to the amount of benefits you gain from having it. Much less hassle. |

Its post like these that make it difficult for me to post anything lol. Nice post. One other thing that Uniforms can possibly help with, is that it makes everyone feel like they belong to the group. You can't identify different social groups by clothing anymore. So you either know the person you're talking to or you judge them by their personality. This would hopefully create a stronger bond between the students. (They'll help each other, no fights, overall fun time in school) |

Yeah... As previously stated, there's not much to say that isn't dead-aim work by Viddy Veechi. I think this could solve quite a few problems, though some might argue that it would subtract from one's personality/creativity. I wouldn't contest that though for sake of the winning scenarios stated above. |

I doubt school uniforms decrease the form of bullying. Bullies will always be bullies and if its not from the clothes they will find something else to bully about. I've known plenty of people that went to schools in which they had to wear uniform and there really weren't any less bullies than the school I went to. If it's not the clothes they will find something. Show offs will always be show offs as well and therefore find something to show off about. Don't get me wrong I can see why uniforms are good and why people would want them. Me personally I prefer no uniforms, and I've never been the person with much money either so it's not like I could afford expensive clothes which I couldn't, and I still never had issues through my 12 years in school |

Lol, Im not saying that uniforms stop bullying full stop. Im just saying that its one less thing they can use to pick on people. Every little helps when it comes to tackling things like bullying. Just cuz you didn't have any trouble with kids picking on you about your clothes doesn't mean it doesn't happen at all. A lot of the time, the girls are the ones that ***** about each other's clothes and the way they dress. I've seen it for myself. Wearing uniform eliminates that. |

I never said because I didn't get bullied because of clothes it doesn't happen. I'm pretty sure it happens. All I said was that bullying will happen if not for the clothes they will find something else to bully about. |

Yeah, but that doesn't mean we should stop trying to solve the problem of bullying, in any small way we can. I agree with Viddy's great lil' list above; I not only think uniforms are appropriate, I actually quite like wearing my school uniform, especially now with the sexy new sixth year blazer I've got. If it's comfortable, creates unity and helps to ork against bullying, I think that justifies the apparent lack of indivuality it causes - which I don't believe in, because I can look around and see dozens of people wearing variants of the uniform in my school. |

Does everyone take what I say out of context? I never said that it was wrong to try and stop bullying, I think it's impossible but I don't think there shouldn't be new ideas out there to stop bullying. I do think there are bigger things to worry about bullies then what someone is wearing. Like I said I can see why people would want them, personally I don't like school uniforms, probably has to do with me not liking dressing up too much either. I'll dress up when I have to, just not my favorite |

I've had to write essays about school uniforms being in school or not. And now that I think about it, I forgot about my standpoint, lol. I personally have never been one to care about school uniforms. If my school were to instate them, I wouldn't mind; compared to others, that is. They have their pros and and cons (as stated above) but I think most people would mind them, lolol. So, when it comes to school uniforms, I guess I don't care. XD |

I had one school with a uniform. I usually broke the uniform code... but hid behind a uniform. If that makes sense. My fav part of the uniform was we could wear all black. I liked that, except on hot days :P |

I've never been to a school where we had school uniforms though I can see the reasons for them, many of which echo what Viddy posted. Though kids will not wear the tie properly or do various things with their uniform to stand out, in a more strict school, this would be punished. The idea is to restrict the childs freedom of expression and show that they are all equal in the school. Uniforms in general remove the personal element from people. |

I'm all for the wearing of uniforms in school (and like everyone else's, my reasons are listed by Viddy :P). One reason Viddy didn't mention is that it encourages students to mix with various 'types' of people. If students were allowed to wear their own clothes, they would gravitate towards those who wore similar clothes to them. With everyone wearing the same uniform, students are forced (in a good way) to express themselves via their personalities rather than their clothes. |
