He's Ugly!; Son Goku is

Sometime between the Frieza Saga and the Cell Saga, the Dragon Ball art style suddenly changed, and one of the consequences was that Goku just didn't look as cool. Back during the Saiyan Saga, Goku was spry and wiry, with boyishly good looks and a Peter Pan spark in his eye, kind of like Tom Cruise. Cell Saga Goku, on the other hand, is this bloated behemoth, and his facial features are hard and contorted, no longer suited to a gentle smile.

Other characters also underwent a change for the worse. Piccolo suffers a similar fate to Goku, losing his alien movie-star looks to instead adopt a sour-looking scowl. Vegeta fares a little better, but his look is altogether too macho, without the villainous fun that defines Saiyan Saga Vegeta (but this matches his new Cell Saga personality, so go figure). The one character that comes out rather is Future Trunks, probably because he was a new character.

With Dragon Ball GT, we're back to dealing with Chibi-Goku, only he's lost his apple-pie cheeks and his round, piercing eyes. Goku then undergoes various Super Saiyan transformation, continuing to look more and more like a hulking monstrosity and less and less like Goku until he morphs one final time and becomes "Crono." Somehow, by the time Chrono Trigger rolled around, Toriyama managed to make the new style to work for him. The characters of that game don't look nearly as awkward as later Dragon Ball.

The 1997 Dr. Slump anime created after GT fares better than Dragon Ball Z, and Arale and company all look good, like Chrono Trigger characters. Goku appears in that show too, and while he hasn't quite regained his Dragon Ball mojo, he's at least somewhat chubby again (and back in orange, too).

Why the big long post about all this? Because every time Goku is represented in promotional art for the next DBZ game, he's shown with his Cell Saga look, rather than the Saiyan Saga look I'm attached to. It just doesn't have that Toriyama mysticism that his other works have.

Well...first of all, Dr. Slump was made before Dragonball. Second of all...

...yeah, this is a hard one to respond to...

has anyone ever stopped to think that maybe Trunks just bought his sword somewhere or something? There's nothing really special about it.

Well it did manage to slice Frieza into a shishkebab so it must've been packing more power than your average blade. Hell even Zelda's sword couldn't pull off that ****.

I don't believe in power levels after the Frieza Saga. :D
Now, there's an idea.

This is purely a biased opinion.

I for one actually like Goku's look after the Saiyan saga.
During sometime in between the Namek and Ginyu Saga his figure changes and also his voice. Then it changes once again, slightly, to the final Goku figure.

You cant really make a topic based on biased opinions cause ultimately there's nothing to talk about.

Sorry, but that's an oxymoron. If my opinion that the late-DBZ art style is bad is invalid, then so is your opinion about the late-DBZ art style being good. If that's the case, we might as well not any any discussion about DBZ art, story, and character, because none of it can be "proven" conclusively. It's fine for you to disagree with me, but throwing around words like "bias" is irrelevant, because we're all here to discuss our biases.

There was a second Dr. Slump cartoon made after Dragon Ball GT. It uses the GT style, but it's been refined so that the characters look less bloated and the faces less scrunched.

The Darkness Returns

After all his friends being killed numerous times and being beaten into a pulp, something snapped inside Goku.

He's sick of being a *****, and pushed around! Goku became.. a Saiya-jin!
