Goku is the hero and the main character if Dragon Ball but why mostly in the West Goku isn't very well liked? The Japanese love Goku and he usually makes it very high in character polls where outside Japan it is every other character but Goku. |

I can only really go by what I feel, but I think it's because Goku is portrayed to be a flawless, unbeatable man and we can't relate to him much. There isn't much personality in him. However the sub-main characters like Vegeta, Piccolo, Trunks and Krillin have flaws so we can relate to them a lot more. In modern times protagonists are beginning to be created with flaws and negative aspects of their personality so the audience can relate to them more, and as Dragonball Z is getting quite old now the main character follows older templates of untouchable heroes. |

I aint from the West but I see your point you making. I think Goku is looked too superior as the main hero. I don't think he's hated the most out of the Dragon Ball Z/GT series He isn't like by many people I know is because of he always finds a way to get out of trouble. He always played the good guy and against all enemies he over powers them.

And too much of a goody two shoes. That's irritating too. People like to see some darkness in the characters. That's why so many people love Goku's first transformstion into SSJ. It' so cool when he squeezes Freeza's hand. That fight would have been much more fun had Goku not gotten a hold of himself and completely wrecked Freeza. |

I personally dont see anything much wrong with him and i can relate to him very well. He's a kind gentle person he doesnt like to kill, yet if he feels that anyone's life in in danger he's willing to go above and beyond to protect them. Many people just judge him for being "Unbeatable." The way he is as a person, his personality, the way he see's things, the way in which he's willing to sacrifice everything for EVERYTHING is what gives him his power. I quote one of the best dam things ever said by someone: "Strength does not come from physical capacity, it comes from an indomitable will" That's my favourite quote ever.... Goku has that indomitable will, that is why he is unbeatable. |

He isn't liked very much in the west because he's Japanese. The racists. In all seriousness, while all of the responses so far have been correct, I feel I must add my own opinion -- scattered though it may be. There is also the fact that Goku is a foreign creation. The anime/video-game subculture knows Goku all too well but besides a few moments, Goku -- and Dragon Ball Z as a whole -- barely scratched western pop culture as a whole -- it's a cult classic (though I use the term loosely), albeit one of the largest in terms of fanbase and success. He's not very well liked because some of his critics (usually the ones who've only watch the "Z" portion of the series) call him out to be a Japanese rip-off of Superman, a character who is already very plain (a comparison that makes some sense; Akira's editor himself said Goku was too plain in the beginning of Dragon Ball) and has the generic "Paragon" superpowers. Another reason may be because, despite his heroic attitude and great strength, he's also very silly -- his naivety and goofiness could turn off potential fans who crave a hardcore action/fighting show with mature protagonists. Though some find his goofiness charming and likable, others may well detest it -- even if they like the show, they may prefer darker characters like Piccolo and Vegeta. That's just my two cents -- most of what I said's already been said. |

Goku is a decent character. In Dragon Ball, he's funny and heroic and doesn't seem to completely out muscle everyone all the time. In DBZ, he's just a little too predictable. He shows less personality, which is the biggest fault of the character more than anything. We see Goku being calm before a fight, Goku getting angry during a fight when his friends get hurt, and we see Goku eat. That's about it. His goofiness isn't a problem for me at all. When he shows comedy, it helps give him some personality beyond the calm, strong hero. |
