Who is the best football manager of all time?

I'm going to say it's between Brian Clough, Alex Ferguson or Jose Mourinho. Brian Clough got Derby out of the old dvision 2 and won the champinship with them in both leagues. Then he proved his mangerial skills were not limited to a single team by doing the same thing with Nottingham and winning some European cup with them twice. However it was also shown that he may not have been so talented without the help of Peter Taylor. So this is why I'm not sure whether he's the best of all time. Alex Ferguson's record at Manchester United speaks for itself. When was the last time they were at the bottom half of the league table? How many European and national trophies have they won? On the other hand I'm not sure how Mr Ferguson has been tested with managing other teams. Jose Mourinho is probably the closest person to being the best football mannager ever. I think if memory serves he's won the Champions League with two different teams. Possibly the only man in history to achieve this. Allthough it's possible Brian Clough could have gotten there first had the Derby-Juventus game not been a fix. Also, would Mr Mourinho do so well with a lower division team? I'm going to say Brian Clough is the best due to consistency, (ignoring his time at Leeds of course) then Mourinho as he won the championship twice with two different teams, (or was it three?) Then Ferguson, as most of his career has been with Man-u and they hardly ever win the European trophies.

Wow. Shows what I know about managers. That is pretty spectacular and for that I'm going to say Mourinho is best. But I wonder if the players like him? He doesn't tend to stay at clubs for very long.

Porto aside, Mourinho has always had substantial financial backing. It's still amazing what he has achieved though.

There's a few, Busby and Shankly have done amazing things at one club which I respect, Clough turned teams around and someone like Mourinho has universal success at any club.

I would say Rinus Michels or Alex Ferguson is the greatest manager of all time. Michels for his total football and Ferguson for being perhaps the most resilient man in football.

Manager Michels
UEFA European Football Championship winner: 1988
FIFA World Cup finalist: 1974
Inter-Cities Fairs Cup Trophy Play-Off winner: 1971
European Cup winner: 1971
European Cup finalist: 1969
Eredivisie winner: 1966, 1967, 1968, 1970
La Liga winner: 1974
KNVB Cup winner: 1967, 1970, 1971
Copa del Rey winner: 1978
DFB Pokal winner: 1983

St. Mirren
Scottish First Division (1): 1976–77
Aberdeen
Scottish Premier Division (3): 1979–80, 1983–84, 1984–85
Scottish Cup (4): 1981–82, 1982–83, 1983–84, 1985–86
Scottish League Cup (1): 1985–86
UEFA Cup Winners' Cup (1): 1982–83
UEFA Super Cup (1): 1983
Manchester United
FA Charity/Community Shield (8): 1990, 1993, 1994, 1996, 1997, 2003, 2007, 2008
UEFA Champions League (2): 1998–99, 2007–08
UEFA Cup Winners' Cup (1): 1990–91
UEFA Super Cup (1): 1991
Intercontinental Cup (1): 1999
FIFA Club World Cup (1): 2008

However, for his policies on football, Arsene Wenger will always be my personal favourite.

Care to say why? I've never heard of him but you must have good reason why you believe he's a great manager.

ok, I suppose that must make him quite a good manager considering it's such a difficult tournament. Especially this year.

Wow. Shows what I know about managers. That is pretty spectacular and for that I'm going to say Mourinho is best. But I wonder if the players like him? He doesn't tend to stay at clubs for very long.
Players love him! In a non homossexual way lol. Ricardo Carvalho pursued him from Porto to Chelsea and now at Real Madrid. Maniche, Paulo Ferreira, Bosingwa from Porto to Chelsea and many others tried to do pursue him but were unfortunate, like Deco and Maicon.
Josι Mourinho is the best ever, he only lost ONE MATCH at home in his whole carrer... FC Porto-Uniγo de Leiria.
He doesn't stay in clubs very long because he wants to win the best championships of Europe, and he is right in doing so, because when he leaves, the club NEVER win the next championship, proving that he is good, unlike Alex Ferguson that doesn't leave Manchester United.
You also ask how good would he be if managed lower class teams?? Well, here's a resume of his short career-

Started in SL Benfica and the season was already started a few months ago, lost his first match but won all of the matches afterward until he got in a discussion with Benfica's President and got fired. After his left, Benfica ended the season in 6th place, an all time bad record for the team...
Next season- Uniao de Leiria. This was a very low class team and Josι Mourinho put them in 5th place, an all time record for this team!
Next season- FC Porto- won the championship with only 2 losses, one of them at home, won the Cup and won Uefa Cup (FC Porto wasn't at Champions League)
Next season- FC Porto- won the championship with only 2 losses, the Super Cup and the Champions League! This is a major achievement for a low budget team. In the past 15 years was the only non English, German, Spanish or Italian team to win the greatest trophy.
Next Season- Chelsea- won the championship with only 2 losses and the Cup. Lost in the semi-finals in Champions League against Liverpool thanks to a phantom goal...
Next Season- Chelsea- won the championship with only 1 loss, the Cup and the Community Shield. Lost in the quarter-finals against Barcelona after a huge game by Ronaldinho.
Next Season- Chelsea- won the Community Shield, got in a discussion with Chelsea's president and got fired. Chelsea won more trophys in two seasons with Mourinho than in the REST of it's history! It would take 3 seasons after Mourinho's left to Chelsea win a championship again.
Next Season- Inter- won the championship, the cup and the super-cup. In Champions League lost against Manchester United after a great game of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Next Season- Inter- won the championship, the cup, the super-cup and the Champions League!! Won everything to be won in a season!! And defeated the all-mighty Barcelona...
This Season- Real Madrid- currently in second post and has only one lost, against Barcelona! Real is a consistant team and has the advantage of having a match against Barcelona at home yet to be played.

And he is also a great player 'creator'. Nobody knew Deco until Mourinho got his hand on him. Lampard and Terry weren't internationally huge before Mourinho. Same as Ricardo Carvalho, Maicon, Sneijder, Diego Milito, Di Maria, Marcelo... How about goalkeepers? Who are Vitor Baia, Petr Che and Julio Cιsar? Oh, I know! They are those goalkeepers that received international awards WHILE being coached by Mourinho. Funny though, they weren't famous before that.
