I have to disagree with this because it sounds to me like you want them to lose just because of how the fans react. The players on the team are the ones training hard and working their asses off to try and win a game. It shouldn't matter what the fans are like. With that said I can see USA beating Ghana, but not Germany, but if England wins they have a 50-50 shot. Beyond that though, I think their chances are very slim as much as I'd like them to win! |

Hey I'm sorry to the players, but the fanbase is what represents a team pretty much, and when over 80 percent of its fans hate soccer every day for three and a half years and then like soccer just for a month, I do not think that team deserves to win it at all. Want me to have more respect for Team usa, then start showing more soccer highlights all the time and not just the world cup. Stop calling it soccer and call it football. Make MLS more powerful, eliminate the whole playoff thing and do more like the European leagues. Once they start respecting football more then I will respect team USA more Like I said Im always defending USA and want them to win pretty much almost everything, but they show no respect for football and therefore I have built on that Example about a month ago I went with my uncle to watch New England Revolution against Benfica at foxboro (Im a Porto fan) I would say over 95 percent of people there were Portuguese people to watch Benfica. Why were there barely any New England Rev fans? It was not a sell out game therefore many tickets still available. Why wouldnt anyone want to go watch a team from their country play against a champion team from one of the European leagues? Even if just exhibition Edited by -Zero-, Jun 24 2010, 06:23 PM.

Man what do you care about what other people think? It's the players who control the field-play, make the saves and score the goals. Italy has an incredible fan base, did this year's team deserve to make it past the first round? Not the way they played for the first (approximatley) 300 minutes of the entire round (including injury times). It was only at the final 10 minutes of the Slovakia game where Italy opened the machine and netted what I thought were the 2 best goals of the tournament so far. With that being said Italy's roster was garbage compared to what it could have been. Giuseppe Rossi, Mario Balotelli, Alberto Aquilani, Fabrizio Miccolli, and Antonio Cassano were all left off the team, some how I have a feeling Marcello Lippi did not have the heart to ever try and win another title this year. Why were there so many players over the age of 30 on this team? players whom in 2006 were already passing their prime! |

I care because I get trashed for liking football, playing football and watching football, and now those same people come acting to me like USA is the greatest team and like they know more about football than I do, therefore yes I do freaking care, no Italy did not deserved to go through, and as I said its the fanbase that represents the sport I dont care how good the players are, this country shows football no respect what so ever and therefore I wont show their football team any respect either. On a side note, Japan and Netherlands qualify, def did not expect Japan to go to the stage of 16 before the tournament started but they did pretty good against Denmark Edited by -Zero-, Jun 24 2010, 08:20 PM.

So therefore show Italy SOCCER team respect because their fanbase is extremley large, they broadcast soccer on television 24-7, and they all enjoy playing soccer at the park. Come on man, that sounds a little hypocritical. If team USA is good you should give them the credit they deserve, they are the minority of people whom like yourself enjoy the sport and encourage the sport being played and broadcasted in North America. The worst thing to do is to discourage your passion. Edited by Mc Esse, Jun 24 2010, 08:24 PM.

All Europe has great fan bases, football is their main sport, football is always on tv throughout Europe. Throughout the whole world football is respected especially Europe and South America which is when competition becomes fair. and USA is over rated right now. They got extremely lucky against England, I give them the Slovenia game that should have been a goal, but they only beat Algeria 1-0 they should have beaten them by more if they truly are as good as everyone is making them out to be. And Yes I am aware England tied with Algeria but lets be honest England did not play well at all in the first stage lets see if they play better in the next stage . Also not hypocritical because I would have liked to see Italy do better and advance they didnt, not all European teams can make it to the end, because most of Europe are huge fans of football Not to mention everyone is now talking like the refs are out to get USA. USA has not been the only team to get screwed in the tournament so far, so they should stop talking like its only the USA Edited by -Zero-, Jun 24 2010, 08:34 PM.

Not all European contries are big on football. Scotland, Wales, Rep of Ireland and Northan Ireland are all big on Rugby I believe. Then there are some of the contries that favour winter games over football or other sports like tennis or golf. Maybe half of the European countries are big on football. Though maybe in some of the countries where they have a rubbish football, they support someone else most of the time. |

For some reason I think Scotland and Republic of Ireland have a better football team than various teams from better half of the North American, African, Asian and Oceanic associations lol. Although their bad luck is being part of the UEFA where they must face many good teams in order to qualify. |

Wales have an alright team, Bellamy, Ramsey, Bale, Collins. They should be doing a lot better in qualification, but the seeding sort of stops them getting a chance as they had Germany and Russia in their group, and only 2 teams went through. As for what Zero is saying, I do sort of agree. It's not fair on the players but although I support England i'm annoyed with the "EASY" slogan that was on the front page fo the sun, going on about how the other teams meant it was a really easy group for England and they would walk it, yet they came second and it made me happy that USA (who the British media were very insulting about their team) came top. In the end, it isn't a fair reflection on the players and i'm sure most of the fans respected their opponents but it's a nagging thought that no matter how well a team does, the people who support them do create an image and like Zero's tainted by the USA fans, i'm the same with the British fans. I will back England and i'm hoping they can go further and do well, but i'm also very impressed with a lot of teams who before the tournament were their to make up the numbers, have now shown that their players can play at a top level. I think the world cup does sort of make fans out of people who aren't which imo is a great thing, but I can see how it would be annoying if the same person who a few months ago was insulting you for watching football is now acting like they were all along. It's a shame Italy didn't go through because they are champions but I agree about Lippi's selections faults, I don't understand why he went for the players he did. France were terrible, but at least they were good fodder for Mexico. Also, How good were Japan, I watched the Holland game out at town and two tv's next to each other showing both games so I had to sort of keep an eye on both, what brilliant free kicks, I won't be surpised if Honda gets a good few offers. Most of all though, I miss Zidane. |

Another reason I do not want USA to win at all. Even if they win the world cup, few weeks later soccer will be forgotten again, and people will go back to trash talking and then when someone says something they will simply say "We won the cup anyways so shut up and its gay anyways" thats exactly how it will be like. "Haha, yeah we ar ebetter than all other teams that care more about soccer, what does it say about them," etc.. theres another reason why I say it would be a disgrace for USA winning the cup Can't really hold it against me, dont get me wrong most of the time I want USA to win, and defend USA in so many things, just football I dont I just cant respect its team thats all. EDIT: Portugal game a little boring, but I was impressed with their defense, did its job, tie is better than a loss. We'll see how they do next against Chile/Spain see if they have what it takes Edited by -Zero-, Jun 25 2010, 04:24 PM.

I watched the Goals, they were brilliant, I also wouldnt be surpirsed if Interest for Honda increaded alot, the goal he set up was fantasticly Done. + O RLY!!!! @ Zero It is the WORLD CUP, it is the biggest sporting competition in the world. Football isnt USAs major sport, it isnt even in the top 3 is it? (Im thinking American Football, Baseball, Basketball). So obviously when USA get into the World Cup there will be loads more people taking interest. Football willl/should become more popular in USA after theyve gotten into the last 16 and there are always people who are like 'Yeah football sucks'. There are people in England who are like that, people who prefer Rugby mostly, they say stuff like 'Football is ***** Rugby is a mans sport' |

Trust me even if the USA wins the world cup, they will disregard soccer afterward. I dont even think its top five, lets see espn shows highlights for Baseball, football, hockey, basketball, golf, college football, college basketball, throughout the year but never soccer, only on the world cup they actually show highlights. |

The Brazil/Portugal game was boring. One of the first times I've agreed with a commentator so far was when one said "this has been the dullest game of the tournament so far". I mean, yeah, the defense of both teams was good, very good. But neither team was playing at their best, they were both happy with a draw.I agree. ![]() But yeah, football is very popular in Scotland, but Rugby is equally popular, if not slightly more so. We take an interest in the World Cup, but tournaments like the Six Nations are of bigger importance to us, imo. |
