This is just a General topic to talk about anythign to do with this years world cup.

So did anyone see the opening game? I thought South Africa played brilliantly, they took a while to get going but after that they did some excellent plays.

Mexico should have one, the guy was not offside, that was an actual goal. Hopefully future games will be more fast paced than todays games, today they were both not that exciting

I was thinking that too, but apparently the explanation is that the player needs to be past the second to last defender including the goal keeper. The fact that the goalkeeper rushed forward past the player before the ball was knocked made it offside.

With that said, I don't agree with it, but it's too late now. lol

Yeah I watched in a local and there was a lot of confusion.
As Hustla said, basically when the keeper charged forward, the last defender became the keeper in the generic offside scenario. He was offside, but it's rare that it happens like that.

The France - Uruguay game wasn't great, it was pretty dissapointing, I expected some better football.

That's kind of a dumb rule, like Hustla said I don't agree with it. Yesterday both games were rather boring, I'm disappointed I missed the South Korea Greece game, but now I'm watching the Argentina-Nigeria game, its a lot more fast paced than both games yesterday, later I'll be watching England- USa

I enjoyed the South Korea game, I really like Chung Yong Lee.

The Argentina game was good, Nigeria had a a great keeper but Argentina should have had a few more goals.
Messi showed real class once again.

Argentina showed that they could be easily caught out on the break. So a top class team such as Spain, Germany or Holland should be able to score several goals against them if they do not change their structure. I think the USA will be a challenge and a test for England. On paper England should pull it off. However it depends on the referee and the English defence, which is often poor.

Come on if England loses you can't blame it on the referee, for the most part they have been doing a great job.

OMG haha I love that really really lucky goal by the USA, they have to consider themselves lucky to get that goal because at least they get a point out of this game

It was lucky. However they were a very very good team. I think the USA could go very far if they carry on playing the way they did. They are easily one of the best teams in the tournament and contenders to win. They put lot of pressure on the English players, particularly Rooney and they made fast counter attacks and had superb defence. England were technically the better team and could have scored a few more goals but then so could America. Probably right that it was 1-1. I also think they should have brought Crouch on ten minutes earlier but I'm sure they had their reasons.

I totally disagree. Sure USA arnt a bad team but they are no way one of the best teams in the tournament, as a Team they didnt play THAT well tonight, but they did have a few players which played very well, also, I dont think they put much pressure on Rooney, they just kept hacking him + I didnt think he had a very good game. USA did make a few good counter attacks but most of the time more english players rushed back before american players got upfield, their defence though was full of holes, its a shame England didnt exploit them as much as they could. Overall, I think England just had trouble getting it in the back of the net.

USA aren't an amazing team but they showed that they definitely have a side that can play good football, they beat Spain the the confederations and I think a lot of people had written them off pretty prematurely.

I was waiting tonight so I missed chunks of the game, but I generally managed to see enough of the game to get an overview.

Weird goal, I felt sorry for Green, he's a good keeper but this will stain him.
Some poor defending as well, I really don't think Carragher is good enough.

On a good note, I've always considered Johnson the weak link in defence but he was really good tonight.
Plus England will go through the group stages, as will USA.

I thought Carragher played quite well for the time he was on, better than Ledley King did, not that King played badly.

I think Hart should be in Goal personally, I think he proved himself in the warm up games.

I think Johnson is pretty consistent with his performance for England, which are generally pretty good.

I disagree about Hart. He hasn't been tested enough so they can't risk putting him on. It was just plain bad luck what happened to Green. Could have happened to anyone. I also agree with Light about Johnson. He was very impressive tonight but he's usually a liability. My dad and I both think Ferdinand is terrible though and we are both glad he can't play.

I think Ferdinand is one of the best Centre Backs in the world atm, hes easily on par with Terry's defensive abilities.

Hart may not have had as much international experience as Green or James, but to be considered with those 2 for the best English keeper and the decision being so unclear, I dont think you should just base it on International experience. Other factors should be considered.

Like their season performance (League only).

Hart:
Games Played - 36
Conceaded - 42
Clean Sheets - 10

James:
Games Played - 25
Conceaded - 46
Clean Sheets - 3

Green:
Games Played - 38
Conceaded - 66
Clean Sheets - 8

Hart's performance last season also won him the Keepers spot in the PFA Team of the Year.
