This topic is to discuss changing the main theme of the forum, we have been a Dragonball forum since 2004, in which we have lasted a long time. The question is, would more people stay if we changed to a diffrent main subject? This topic is to discuss that and leave your thoughts, I wouldn't want to ask without you. I am thinking of changing to a community forum of mostly general chat, most of the Dragonball sections would still remain. It would mean that the chat sections would be expanded. Of course, it's up to you, the choice with the most votes after a week will move onto further discussion with your input. If there are more others, those will be looked into. |

Hmm... I think it's the Dragonball theme that brings us new members, but it's the community that keeps them. I don't know how successful a shift would be in terms of site orientation. I'll deliberate a little before casting my vote. |

rather than shift the focus, I feel it would be better to simply focus on the forum's strengths. The community is what keeps the forum alive, and Dragon Ball is what draws people to the community, so we simply need to make the dragon ball aspects of the forum more appealing, while making the aspects of the community more open so people get to know each other better. I'm not entirely sure what brings people here when compared to other DBZ related forums, but if we found that out and built upon it, it may help even more. likewise, determining what things about the community aspects of the forum keep us around, and finding ways to improve it, would keep people around longer. of course, I think some experimentation of new ideas are always gonna help, like having a new volunteer position on the forum, that sends invites to those who haven't been on the forum in a while to come back and visit. we should also probably want start a RPG section in the forum, that is open RPG where people can post as they desire, and then have a few people that can RP other peoples character after a certain time frame if they are not involved to prevent it from halting. we wouldn't want the RPG topics to go in the "active topics" though, so we'd either want a link to some other site, or find a way to make them not show up the active topics. the best way I can think to make the RPG, is to have different topics, each one as a different location for characters to RP in. characters would probably also need to have their own topics, but to prevent too many character posts in one topic, you'd want to divi them up, organize them, and seperate them based on either what "generation" they are/when they were created, and what kind of character they are. we would need to discuss and review all of our options for an RPG before we make any lasting decisions. I have seen a lot of ways of running it, and while some ways may provide some control, others are just more fun. well have to decide which kind of RPG we want to do if we start it up again. I think having the RPG here on the forum would greatly improve the odds of the RPG lasting. anyway, those are just a few of my thoughts on the kinds of things we should be thinking about if we want to add on to the forum. I'll contribute some more thoughts later, or as they come, whichever come first? lol. Edited by Temphis, Jun 10 2010, 02:13 PM.

I'm not sure. On one hand, it would be nice to talk about other things besides Dragon Ball here. On the other hand, I think we still need a good board that focuses on Dragon Ball; the MFG Forums seem to be gone, which was one of the few other sites I felt was worth visiting. Even when it comes to other subjects, the fact that we're all Dragon Ball fans gives us something in common when we want to talk about them. |

I haven't got time for a big post so I'll do that, and vote in the poll, when I get home, but my first thought is to keep it as DBZ, or possibly change it to a general Anime/Manga forum. I mean most of the members here like Anime/Manga outside of DBZ (with some not even liking DBZ). |

having other anime discussion sections isn't a bad idea, but we kinda already do, so I suppose we'd just need to "enhance it" or make it more of a focus.

Temphis, we've tried RPGs on here several times and they always die, we don't have the people who are commited to keeping them running here. With regards to the Anime/Manga section, they would be expanded with a community forum, with the Dragonball section still there. The Dragonball section would still be on the main forum listing, it just wouldn't be the focus of the forum. |

Personally, I think the set-up is fine as it is; we get attention from people looking for a site to join, and the sands of time weed out those that don't really want a place in the community. If we want to make this place more community-orientated, we should make posting in long dead topics (in Talk About Anything and its sub-forums, anyway) not a problem, but something to be encouraged; not everyone was around when those topics were originally discussed, and there's bound to be a lot of unused opportunity for activity in that. As for RPG's, I think the last venture into that territory should be a sufficient lesson; there aren't enough actively interested members for it to take off and keep running. Unless the baying masses demand an RPG, I don't think we should bother again. |

I like the forum the way it is. But that's just because I'm autistic and don't like change. The fact that this forum was mainly to discuss the world of Dragonball is what drew me here. I also think changing that focus may make the site more ordinary, which is bad. |

Problem is, less and less people are looking for dragonball related sites: Google Trends Search There was a peak during the film but that didn't bring it back, so to speak. I'm also not sure how many people leave this forum because it's no longer something that intrests them. It's becoming too much of a specialist subject and I have no idea how many people here are commited to promoting the Dragonball aspect, sure it draws people in but then some of them leave, for whatever reason. I have no intention of removing Dragonball discussion off this forum altogether because I know there are people who want to talk about it, I'm just more for a community focused forum. A general forum opens us up to a more wider audiance, some people won't want to join a Dragonball Z Forum just to post in the general discussion areas. Yes we are possibly one of the last remaining active Dragonball forums, but there's a reason for that, it's becoming to specialised, as mentioned above. Most Dragonball discussion now will happen on more general Anime focused forums. But this is my view and everyone has their own and I am pleased by the responces you have given. I want to say that no decision will be rushed into, you will have the chance to debate it at length and carry any arguments forward if you don't like the result. Changing a forums focus is a risky move, as Kotetsu said to me what I asked him for his view. So everything will be taken into consideration. |

Oh lolololol. I do prefer the idea of a community forum, but I think that the risk of the change, as Kotetsu said, isn't worth it. And although the searches for a Dragon Ball forum have gone down, I think it's still that which brings us most of our new members. |

But then again the risk might pay off, it's a bit of a gamble sure, again though, I wouldn't remove the Dragonball sections or condense them for some time. |

experimenting with some new ideas should have minimal negatives if they don't work, and could have substantial results if they do. I think it's worth trying out some new ideas, so long as the old stuff stays and is still easily accessible, and isn't hidden. |

I think changing the forum's subject to a general Anime/Manga area would bring in much more people. As I said before, most of the members here like other anime and manga on top of DBZ. This broader audience would in turn enhance the activity of the forum and the other areas. Although we would need a bigger, tighter moderating team (assuming we do get a lot of new members) because at the moment we don't really have much trouble to deal with. If more members come, that increases the chance of trolls and flamers and the like. But as for the change, we could change the Dragonball section into a General Anime/Manga discussion area. We could have a sub-forum for Dragonball (just one general Dragonball area rather than the multiple sections we already have) and then 2-3 other popular anime/manga sections, and then an 'Other Anime/Manga section. |
