Yajirobe Appreciation Thread

This thread is for fans of the greatly under-appreciated character Yajirobe. I'll share a few of my thoughts on the character as he appears in Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z.

Dragon Ball

Yajirobe was a great character in Dragon Ball. When we first met him, he and Goku fought, but Yajirobe was more than capable of holding his own. He was about as strong as Goku, but he really doesn't have Goku's technique or training. Yajirobe would have lost if they had done more than just briefly spar. Still, that episode really made me think of Yajirobe as an older version of Goku (if Goku had never met Bulma).

Yajirobe, like Goku, lived a relatively secluded life in the woods. Similarly, he has a lack of manners and a huge appetite. Yajirobe's taste for eating really weird stuff is demonstrated when Yajirobe eats Cymbal after Goku defeated the monster. True, Goku asked him not to eat the creature, but it was a few years before that Goku used to eat wolves and other bizarre things himself.

The biggest difference between the two would be that Yajirobe is fairly grouchy, whereas Goku usually shows a lot of enthusiasm and optimism.

I think that Yajirobe really could be like Goku's older brother. After Yajirobe and Goku become friends, Yajirobe really does start to look out for Goku. He gives Goku a ride to Korin's Tower after the first battle with King Piccolo, and he goes a step further by carrying him up to the top. Sure he had to be bribed, but I think some of that was for show. Even if it wasn't, Yajirobe does come through for Goku after the defeat of King Piccolo. Yajirobe watched from the sideline, but he was concerned enough to show up and catch Goku before he could crash to the ground.

In DBZ, Yajirobe is upset when Chi-Chi refuses to acknowledge Goku despite the fact that he had been dead for nearly a year and was severely injured from his fight with Vegeta.

So to some extent, Yajirobe does seem like a protective older brother for Goku. Not to mention he sort of looks like a young Raditz...the hair is similar, and if you think of how Goku was stockier when he was young, then you could sort of see Raditz resembling Yajirobe as a child.

Dragon Ball Z

Yajirobe is mainly here for comic relief. His biggest accomplishment was as the leader of the Earth's Special Forces when he removed the tail of Vegeta. Other than that, he supplied the Z fighters with senzu beans.

So what are your feelings about this character?

I loved Yajirobe in Dragonball, but in DBZ his character completely changed. He was never that much of a snivelling, lazy coward in Dragonball. He should have gone to Namek instead of Bulma. At least he would have been of some use to everyone.

your dbz summary of yajirobe is correct. I have to agree with your whole post. He was cool in Dragon ball but in Dragon ball z he just faded into the background. He's like a connection to the past and as you said comic relief.

Question: I just saw a clip of a scene where Yajirobe was tied down and a saw was descending and about to cut him into pieces. Krillin, Gohan, Roshi, and several Namekians are behind bars and they aren't able to help Yajirobe. Does anyone know what this scene is from? I'm guessing it appears in one of the DBZ movies, but I don't remember this at all.

I JUST read the volume of dragonball where yajirobe was introduced. Before, I thought of him as a useless comic relief character. but in dragonball his role takes on a whole new level of importance. I love how he had actual strength (or toughness, as they put it). he was actually a pretty cool character, and I wouldve liked to see him go through the same training goku did.

He would have put Kullilin, Picollo and Vegeta on the sidelines when it came to popularity if that had happened. He's such a great character in Dragonball. Why the heck does he have to become so useless?

THIS THREAD IS BRINGING SEXY BACK, GUYS!

One point that I will make is that, in Dragon Ball, not many fighters outclassed Yajirobe as severely as Vegeta, or Nappa in that sense. Only the big baddie, Piccolo (and, possibility Daimao... ?), the supreme being, Kami, and the "genius" fighters, Goku, Tenshinhan, etc; Kuririn considered him hella strong.

It is a same he was left behind by the Namek Saga; you could tell that Toriyama wanted the Z Warriors to have some involvement with the story, otherwise, Yajirobe would not have cut off Vegeta's tail, the Warrior would not have made it to Kaio's, etc.

All aside, I would like to believe that Yajirobe kept with some type of training, enough to where when he'd (comically) pre-decline any of Goku's pleas for help (against the Cyborgs, Cell, etc.) that he had actually done something worth Goku asking for his help.

You have some good points about the character, good observations there.

I like him better as he was on Dragon Ball as well, but that can be said to pratically every Dragon Ball character IMO, if not character-wise, in terms of how relevant they were.

He looked like a sideline character even in dragonball. I always considered him like the Ox King or General Tau. Strong when they first appeared but after a few episodes faded into the background. Remember when Yajirobe fought in the tourament as the masked contender? He got his butt kicked because his opponent tripped and "accidentally" headbutted him in the chin; everyone laughed at him. At least when Yamcha fought Kami (disguised as Hero) he was able to force him into fighting seriously.
