The Ancient Elements

I was reading about this topic yesterday and how the ancient elements - fire, water, air and earth - dominated natural philosophy for thousands of years. Some people believed these elements had a great influence on the psychological nature of man.

My question is, do you think YOU are connected to one of these elements in particular?

I've always loved fire. I think it expresses power and intensitivity. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with my nature and personality, but out of the four elements, I've always felt more inclined to like fire. What about you?

Hmm... this is actually quite a deep question, because you need to think about what each element has connotations of to you, and then assess which one you assossiate yourself most with. Nice topic, Strawberry :)

I would say earth because I like to bury things it's always emoted impartiality and predictability to me, which are both things I guess I am. And a few other reasons, but I wouldn't want to go on and seem pretentious. :P

If I was to associate myself with an ancient element it would probably be fire too. My personality flickers like a flame. Sometimes I'm useful but I can also cause damage if you don't treat me with respect.

I have sometimes thought about this as well. I have often felt a connection to both earth, and wind. I have always been sort of uncomfortable around water until recently. I think fire is way cool, and in recent years, I've been developing more traits that are often associated with it, like leadership ability, assertiveness, and passion.

that being said, I'm not sure if there is a eternal significance of these 4 elements, but I do think there is an eternal resemblance, correlation, or association, between these 4 elements and the traits that people have, as well as other things like colors, abilities, interests, etc.

all cultures have drawn similarities between certain principles or ideas that can connect with one another, making those specific principles/ideas more concrete and excepted as traditional or pre-determined notions. it's all very interesting indeed.

This is a really great, interesting topic.

I'd say Water is something I can relate to the most out of the elements. I'm mostly calm, relaxed and just tend to go with the flow of life (hopefully not sounding too poetic there :P).

Somthing interesting about Fire: it has many characteristics of a living thing. It grows, moves, dies, reproduces (you can make fire with fire).

And you can destroy fire with fire too. But why would anyone be that cruel? Fire's the best. *Starts singing, FIRE, DA NA NA*

Well, in different cultures there are different definitions or rather classifications as to what the classical elements actually are.

Some are not restricted to those 4. For instance in ancient China they had 7: Water, Wind, Fire, Earth, Wood, Metal and Heaven/Space etc..

There are some that believe that Lighting is an element for instance.

When choosing are we restricted to those 4 or can we pick any of the classical elements?

This was just a topic for fun Brian. None of us here actually believe we have some special spiritual link to one of those elements. The question was posed and we thought about it. If you don't want to take part, just don't post, don't go acting like some sort of self-righteous twat.

Johnny on the spot. Well actually, I'm going to contest that. Who is the supreme determiner of what is or isn't an element? Gold is a natural resource. I could have just used it instead, since water is also a natural resource.

My post was an attempt at thrashing spirituality, because I find it as a whole, to be absolutely ridiculous and illogical. I wanted to express that this is how I felt about it, and why, because in many ways I find the holy qualities of random things and objects given by people to be hilarious. You don't?

Check this out. According to Hinduism, cows are a holy beast. Now, tell me. Why would some people laugh at this, but they wouldn't comprehend the humor in other random "sacred" things?

I'll bet it's tradition.

I bet these very same people would never laugh at the fact that human beings give quality to the way the sprouting dead cells on their heads are styled. What are you element supporters going to do when we discover other planets that only contain some of the elements here on earth? Oh, since they're the most legendary to us people, us human people since we're the greatest, they can still just be so wonderful since earth was the origin of the great humans.

Please tell me I didn't lose you. You would be letting -me- down, Jake.
Maybe because instead of being "random" these "elements" are considered sacred by some religions because of the extreme importance they possess to the human race in general.

Fire
Water
Earth
Air

Life as we know it would be impossible without these, so it's only natural that some people would find these elements worthy enough of to consider sacred.
Which sorts of dents your "Arrogant humans" argument as it seems it's more out humility than some "superiority complex" against other "planets".

If you want, i'll explain a little slower and with more hand puppets so your insignificant mind capacity can fully grasp what i'm attempting to convey to you here champ.

not only that, but within each of these 4, there are many many other sub "elements" related to them.

Earth is often associated with Metal's and Life, like plants, so if Brian feels more like he relates with plants that have mind altering effects, than I'd say he relates most with Earth, lol.

the 4 elements, for the most part, relate to every natural thing on the planet, and even the unnatural that we create from them. they aren't spiritual, they are more "symbolic" or "representative" of things in the world that are connected to one another, yet different.

Brain, I think your really overcomplicating this, and relating it to religions and traditions, when it's actually just more of a simplistic comparison between life's characteristics and the natural elements of the earth.

Back on topic, I think I'd associate myself most with Water.

I dunno why, really. Water is sort of calm and easygoing but can be like...crazy too, I like that. It's how I'd like to think of myself as.
