My favourite general has to be Napoleon Bonaparte. Italian campaign of 1796–97 - Defeated Austria, Papal States, and Venice.

Egyptian expedition of 1798–99 - Defeated Knights of St. John at Malta, defeated Mamelukes in Egypt, defeated Ottoman Empire in Syrian Province.

Italy 1800 - Re-defeated the Austrians in Italy.

Battle of Austerlitz, December 2, 1805 - Defeated the combined Russian and Austrian Armies.

Peninsular War 1807 - Napoleon invades and occupies Spain.

Sort of won in Russia in 1812, but was forced to withdraw.

He won so many battles that it would probably fill a book to list them all. He only ever lost three times.

Moved to Talk About Anything.

My favouite is definately Julius Caeser. I love reading about Ancient Roman history and I find Caeser the most interesting. I also enjoy reading about the conquests of Alexander the Great and Genghis Khan.

Otto Von Bismarck.

In his campaigns became known as the "Iron General". Despite being Prussia's Foreign minster rather than an actual part of the military, he directed almost everything from the route of attack to ensuring that his foes were isolated.

He worked towards uniting the German states in three decisive "Wars of Unification". The first against Denmark was basic and required little diplomatic skill or military power, but it's aftermath gave Bismarck the perfect opportunity to cause a rift between Prussia and they're Germanic rival, Austria. The second war was won through diplomatic skill as well as military strength, something that Prussia had an impressive amount of due to reforms that Bismarck had himself caused. The last war was against France, and by making it seem that France was the hostile aggressor Bismarck managed to scare the other Germanic states into joining Prussia in tis war, and keeping Britain neutral in the war. After this, the German states did unite to form the German Empire.

I get the feeling that if he had wanted to Bismarck could have took this fledgling empire to even greater achievements.

I like a lot of generals, but my favorite would be Alexander III of Macedon (Alexander the Great)

He utilized his father's weapons (the 18-foot long spear) in war, and always fought by his men. Unlike Darius III, who just stood in the center of the battles. He's the one who strengthed the catapults and brought Siege Toiwers into warfare, as shown in the Siege of Tyre. His spread of culture is amazing. I really liked how he blended all cultures ( Greek, Macedonian, Persian, Eygptian, Indian...) into one. Kinda like a melting pot.

Oh, his conquest of the Persian Empire was cool, too. :p

His battles:

Battle of Chorena ->(Revolt of Thebes) -> Battle of Grancius (sp.?) -> Battle of Issus -> (Siege of Tyre) -> Battle of Guagamela -> Battle Hypses. (sp?)

His military tactics were simplistic, sure, but they worked really well. He was courageous and charged straight for the center of the army. Like he did with Darius. Twice.

His record for owning a mass amount of land is pretty nice. Might not be number one, but it's pretty impressive. Macedonia through the edge of India.

Overall, he's my favorite for his military tactics, his compassion for his men, his loyalty, and really, I love reading about him. I'll probably come across more generals as I continue the course in school and look into their history too if I'm interstied.

I also like Genghis Khan. His empire was the largest land empire ever and it lasted for 3 generations. He treated people of all faiths and cultures equally too. He transformed Monglia from a land of nomads into a proper country. Currency, trade, science, the lot.

I haven't learned about that guy yet. But, I know he holds the record for most land owned by one man. My history teacher and I were talking about him and Alexander.

Hey, that guy reminds me of Charlemange. Kinda. A shame everything fell when the Carlogian Empire was split. It was going good for a time.

General Douglas MacArthur. Founded the current basis of Japanese government, and managed to keep the Emperor around for traditional aspects. Led the attacks of the first Atomic bomb droppings and ended it with a pen.

Also I don't see Rulers as Generals on the battle front. Some rulers did lead the battles but others didn't.

Yeah. I think Richard the Lionhearted and Charlemage fought with their men, too. All the rulers who didn't fight with their men were mostly there to spectate. Like Darius III, who became the target of Alexander the Great. I think most kings and rulers just came to watch their men fight, rather than helping them.

I believe some Roman Emperors fought in an army before they became Emperor.

William Wallace fought with his men. And he successfully led an inferior army, in terms of training and equipment, against England. Lostafter a while, but there's only so much a guy can do against those sort of odds. :P

I was thinking about Julius C. I forgot he led the battle against Pompay in the battle of Pharsalus.
Once he became emperor there wasn't much going on. But the battle of Pharsalus started in 48-47ish at the beginning of his ruling, and the rest was his dictatorship until 44.

Owain Glyndwr

Rather than his accomplishments as compared to others in this list they are little and rather unimportant as a whole, the idea he had of freeing Wales.

Is that the guy who wouldn't attack from the high ground so all his men starved to death and abandoned him? Only had to win that battle and he could have taken England.

Which battle do you refer too?

But what you said is wrong,
He could never have taken England.

I don't know the name of the battle. Basically what happened was, there was this Welsh rebellion and this guy managed to kick most of the English out of Wales. However, there was this battle which would finally end the English's control of Wales but neither side would give up the high ground. On the English side, they were recieving fresh supplies so they could camp on their hill forever if they wanted too. But on the Welsh side they started running out of food and then people started going awol due to the lack of fighting. So this guy had to give up. I think there is an actual debate whether he could have taken England. Personally, I think he would have been happy with just Wales.
