I've always assumed it was somehow related to the Oozaru transformation, as in a defense mechanism the Saiyan body enters when threatened, trying to compensate for something it cant naturally do without moonlight and a tail. The thing i've noticed about all Super Saiyans are that they were all without tails, and it wasnt really until Goku's generation where Saiyans with their tails cut off could actually achieve the legendary status. Does anyone have any information regarding this? On maybe who started the myth of the Super Saiyan and whether it was explained further? |

I don't think Akira ever bothered to explain it. I think SSJ is just a form he came up with to increase the shows popularity, cause it was a cool idea that seemed new and made people think that Goku was even more awesome. all the ssj weve seen had no tails by sheer coincidence. If not having a tail helps achieve it though, I suppose that could make sense, but thats just speculation and stuff, since that was never stated to effect the transformation or how to achieve it in any way. |

super saiyans having no tales is infact a coincidence. the old super saiyan of legend had a tail. The reason why all the earth saiyans can go SSJ is because it is in there blood. Both Vegeta's blood line and Goku's blood line has the super saiyan trait in it. And when you add that ability to go super saiyan with the intese trainig and compitition the earth saiyans have then you can easily see how they were able to get enough strenght for this transformation |

I love Gohan and Videl Dragon ball Z Forever "Guardian of the city, I am the one and only...Great Saiyaman!" - Gohan "Fight you? No, I wanna kill you." - Gohan to Super Buu "It will take more than head games to stop me! You may have invaded my mind and my body, but there's one thing a Saiyan always keeps...HIS PRIDE!" - Vegeta "There's no such thing as fair or unfair in battle. There is only victory, or in your case, defeat." - Vegeta "Servant woman, bring me a drying cloth at once!" - Vegeta "I am the hope of the universe. I am the answer to all living things that cry out for peace. I am protector of the innocent. I am the light in the darkness. I am truth. Ally to good! Nightmare to you!" - Goku | |

I heard it described as an emotional reaction once, similar to crying. Just as your body reacts to sadness by creating a tear, the saiyan body (only when it has a high enough power level,) reacts to a shocking, extreme event, by triggering the super saiyan gene within them. that's what i think. |

I think theres certainly room to explain the transformation in future novels. As much I like DBZ i've always felt that Toriyama had a lot of character development routes that he could've taken that he just didnt. But i also believe the simplicity of DBZ is one of the things that makes it so enjoyable. But I'm just saying theres room for another movie in explaining just whats going on with the Super Saiyan transformation. A story for Goku and Vegeta Jr. |

oh yeah, I totally agree. Character Depth and simplicity can go hand in hand, it just takes more effort and more realistic characters. I think Akira was trying to avoid making the show hard on himself by avoiding continuity and the importance of multiple characters, or a solid story. that way he could change things when he wanted or needed in order to explain new ideas, and then just go change them again later on. Despite how much the show may have contridicted it'self, or how little the characters grew in character, we wanted more. that being said, I feel the show would have been far better had he had the time and ability to add in character development, continuity, and a constant theme or story that lead up to a climactic event or something. I guess your right, some of the characters did have character development (Gohan, Piccolo, Vegeta, and Krillin a little bit) but I wouldn't call it great, and I definately wouldn't say there was a lot of realism or depth to any of the characters in the show, cause non of them felt real when you compare them to real life characters or things. non of them really even had quirks or anything, I think they just had a slight personality difference and a different way of talking/voice actor to make them unique outside of their back stories, if they even had/got one. the plots evolution, wasn't really consistant. like I said, there was a different plot for each saga, because Akira was trying to avoid "continuity" so that he wouldn't need to try and explain things later if they didn't match up. I think his ideas were evolving alot though, since he kept on expanding onto the Dragon Ball universe with new ideas and concepts in each saga. Dragon Ball, and Dragon Ball Z, were never "kid" shows though, it was simply targeting all ages....in japan. In america it was butchered by Funimation to look like a kid show, when in fact it is still very much targeting teens and young adults, which is why it has the huge fan base it does. but yes, to agree with your answer: Super Saiyan=Happy Fans Edited by Temphis, Mar 22 2010, 03:39 PM.

I wonder what inspired the transformation? Though in all honesty, very few of Toriyama's ideas seem to really have strong inspiration from anything else with of course the exception of Goku being a different version of the Monkey character from some Chinese fairy tale which I cant remember. It's very amusing how many shows mimic the super saiyan transformation now. |
