Well I put most of mine in the other thread, but I'll restate them here.

Genre-specific fictions would be nice and make it more fair, especially if the judge is going to be a single person and not group voted. (i.e. Emotive (anger, fear, happiness, despondency), or just plain genre: Horror, Comedy, Action, etc.)

Making categories on what the fic will be judged upon is helpful, so that we know what the judge(s) is/are looking for in our fictions. (i.e. Creativity, Best Written *grammar/style/etc.*, Originality, Genre-specific, etc.)

A separate thread for each fanfiction would work best, so the author could get comments on the fanfiction itself outside of contest voting.

Well, maybe if members submit something other than DBZ, you could file that away into something like a Gallery, for reference. I know I have a few Golden Sun fanfics gathering dust back on The Adepts of Weyard. I'd be glad to share them here.

Hmm...

I mostly agree with what Garlic Jr. said. However, I wouldn't go around and make all these categories. Maybe make the category Genre, and then shove the genres into there as subforums. But, I wouldn't add them right away. Only when one writes about them.

As for the judging thingy Garlic suggested, I would hold off on that 'till entries come in. If only to reserve a little bit of space. No need to have empty categories lying around. For like, months.

Comments sounds like a nice idea, but, the commenter should give some actually advice, not words to stroke your ego, like most "authors" do back at Fanfiction. It's annoying when a cruddy story gets gushing praise. They should be getting actual feedback, not chat lingo.

I say, if you're going to make a Comments section, make sure that members can't edit the fic, and give more feedback than one line. Something like:

"omg. i love this soooooooo much. write more, plz."

Should not be acceptable. However, on the hand, something like:

"Good progress. I can tell you've improved from your original fanfiction. However, I encourage you to go back and correct minor spelling and grammar errors, since they tend to stick out to the reader. If a reader is truly focused on your work, then something as simple as a typo sticks out. You can tell when the reviewer just skimmed the story for any juicy parts, just because their favorite characters was mentioned - or something silly like that."

Should be acceptable. A good, honest review incorporates a good, bright attitude towards the writer, suggestions, and how the person could improve their work. Begging is never a good review, and it's just crud by lame authors who don't know how to spell "grammar". Set a word limit. At least 20 words. If anything is less than that, then delete it. It's not a proper review. That small, ugly sentence I wrote above should get deleted in a heartbeat.

But, encouraging to continue is nice as well. If you really think the author should make a sequel or something, then yeah, say so at the bottom. Don't pester the person to do so, though. A good, well developed story takes time; patience. Never rush inspiration.

I'm gonna stop typing now. I can't really think of anything else, haha.
Try this, you might like it.

Okay I see that was what HustLa suggested too. He suggested to make it genre specific rather than just words. The next competition I'll have HustLa choose a genre. Can you elaborate on making categories? I really am interested in it. What categories do you think should be judged? Then I'll add it into the next competition.

One of the ones that should be in there are the fanfiction quality of writing. Proper grammar and sentence stricture should be encouraged here, not something thrown together without a care into the mechanics of writing. For those who want a fanfiction to stay In-Character, perhaps there can be a category on which sticks true to the series in general. Then of course creativity/originality...those whose writing style shines through with brilliant plotline and overall idea of the story itself.

For genre-specific categories its simple.
Horror = Which had the best scare factor?
Comedy = Which made you laugh loudest?
Angst/Despondency = Which tugged on your heart strings most?

Stuff like that.

The categories being judged can change per contest. But the few I'd leave in is at least Quality and Creativity/Originality, at very very very least.

I think I'll start judging the fanfics instead of having a guest judge. Then I'll have specific categories for each genre like you said. It's better because that means more people can win at a certain category. I'm probably going to give a score to each story so the people know where they stand. The over all performance winner will get their fanfics posted in my blog and Fanfic Hall of Fame. 2nd place winner will be able to determine the genre and words they want to be used for the next story.

Thanks for your ideas Garlic Jr. It's coming together. The next competition will be cleaner and more precise.
