The author probably didn't even know that he was going to introduce wards later on in the story. He probably came up with lots of ideas as he went, considering he was pretty young when he started Eragon. |

Or was a perhaps more canon outcome also consider they had Durza with him - as the magical user i'm assuming he helped them out ^^ |

Well all it says is that 12 Urgals shot arrows at the elves and two of them died. There's no spell known that can cause material objects like arrows to ignore wards. As I say, it's a petty gripe but it's a non-canon feature that changes the entire fate of the story world. Worth questioning. |

Well actually it's stated that it is possible to enchant the arrows in such a way that they manage to bypass the wards - I seem to recall so anyway

I did not know that. If so, that's probably the canon excuse, even if it isn't specified at the time, good shout Tim. Also, how boss are Durza and the Ra'zac? Re-reading Eragon, it's wierd how the medium-level Baddies seem far more menacing than, like, Galbatorix later in the series. |

Actually now that you mention it. While reading Inheritance I kept thinking how cool the Ra'zac and Durza were. Easily Paolini's best creations. Spoiler: click to toggle

That's right. When Eragon and Arya are talking around a camp fire in Brisingr, Arya explains that "Durza must have enchanted the arrows" so they could pierce the elves wards, if I remember correctly. The rider's swords and that magic spear go through most wards too, so it's definitely possible, especially for a shade. Well, Brom says that he could beat the Ra'zac by himself in the daylight, but Eragon later reflects that Brom had decades to think up spells to get around their wards, plus the energy in Aren. From what I can tell, Shades are the strongest of any creature excluding Dragons, or someone using Eldunari. Eragon beating Durza was pretty much luck in catching Durza by surprise, and the shade he and Arya fought later was only barely taken down with both of their efforts. Spoiler: click to toggle

I'd say it's just plot convenience. Interesting you pointed that out, though. I can't wait to get this. I've a feeling it's going to be fantastic. Edited by Naruto-Gogeta, Nov 26 2011, 09:50 PM.

Okay, so during my break, I finished this book. Do you want to know what I thought of it? Here goes. This book was the biggest piece of crap I have ever had the displeasure to read! I mean, you guy's know me, and I ALWAYS root for the bad guys! And the way that Paolini just copped out at the end.....CHRIST! The biggest thing I hate is how Galbatorix is "defeated", and how Shruikan is screwed over. Shruikan...now there is an interesting dragon. He didn't get a single line, but the way that Paolini describes him, make him a thousand times more interesting than Saphira, or Glaedr, or...good lord..Firner. I hate Paolini now. I hate him with all my heart. If you haven't read this book yet, then don't. Edited by FollowtheLeader, Feb 16 2012, 10:46 PM.

I like this series of books. The Inheritance Cycle is a well made series and story. But I kind of think its overrated, but that's mainly because I have read dozens and dozens of other fantasy novels.

I love the story, but the writing is obviously sub-par because these are his first books. Have any fantasy recommendations, Poo?

The Black Company books. Of course, not if you don't like dark fantasy. |

While I agree that the Inheritance Cycle is cliched... I don't really care. It's still just plain awesome. I got up to page 100 or so in Inheritance (I just recently got it), and am really hoping that their method of killing Galbatorix isn't really as simple as using that green sword (I forget the name). I kinda got distracted though because I'm reading Infinite Jest now. Only 900 more pages to go and then I'll finish reading Inheritance Am I the only one who found Varaug (the shade after Durza) really anticlimactic and random? Seriously. He's implied to be even stronger than Durza (Varaug had much much more spirits possessing him), and he just gets wtfpwned in seconds, when Durza vs Eragon was a thrilling fight where Eragon only won through sheer luck, and even then, he remained crippled for the remainder of the book and through Eldest. Shades were an awesome part of the series, and Varaug had so much potential, especially consider he was (likely) stronger than Durza. |
