I've been trying to decide for two days straight, but I can't pick out a proper subject for a college English assignment. I have to write an "exciting" 1,500 word essay on a "Well-known contemporary American of the last decade." This part is easy. However, there's a catch. "You must make a definitive argument against or in the defense of the chosen subject." Alright, so the problem lies within the fact that there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of famous people that can be defended, or so that's what I gather at least... The famous people that I could dog are going to be difficult to make "exciting," though. It's obviously hard to write about somebody in terms of their lifestyles and traits if you can't stand them. I thought about writing an essay on Michael Jackson at first, but I personally believe he was a child molester. So, despite the fact that I could write a lot about him, I don't really want to talk down about somebody. On the other hand, I thought about NFL MVP Ben Roethlisberger, who was just recently pelted with (false) rape accusations. I just don't care much for writing about the guy though, and I really doubt I could squeeze much "excitement" out of his fame. ...Please help? Any... contemporary Americans of the last 10 years that would be interesting to write about and defend...? Edited by Dark, Oct 31 2009, 06:23 PM.

There are many Americans in the past decade that are known for what they did in the previous 2 decades, such as Michael Jackson. So I wouldn't think he'd be the best choice if you want to get a great mark on this project. Most of his achievments were in the 70's and 80's anyhow. Don't pick Barack Obama, everybody's gonna do that. Choices to consider Dana White: Commisoner of the UFC; turned an unknown promotion into a enourmous profit making money machine. Gary Bettman: Commisoner of the NHL; turned a league that was going downhill more popular than the NBA. I found this out too Rupert Murdoch: Australian born American citizen link 1) http://www.moderateindependent.com/v2i4world.htm link2) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rupert_Murdoch This should hep you choose someone. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_billionaires_%282009%29 If all fails pick Oprah. |

Okay, I really appreciate the help Mc Esse. There's just one thing that blocking the way into picking any of these people, and that's the fact that I have to, "Make a strong argumentative thesis in defense of this person." I appreciate your efforts though, really I do. This is just the part I'm having problems with. I'm very indecisive on this. |

Well in simple form your thesis can be that these 3 people I mentioned started with nothing and then in your conclusion, when it's time to say that they now rule ''empires'', restate the thesis. They started with nothing, now they are some of the most influential people on earth. That would work very well with Rupert Murdoch, but you;re going to have to do some reading on him. You should be able to find much information to defending him, and to why he is considered one of the most influential Americans in the world. Personally I doubt many people in your class will be writing about him, so that's always a plus. |

Okay, I decided to do my paper on Dana White. Guy can be a prick, but I'm picking up a pretty good deal of material out of his background. |
