Funny thing, look at European football. Since 2005 the top 10 richest teams were (in order from richest to least): Real Madrid Manchester Utd. Barcelona Bayern Munich Chelsea Arsenal Liverpool AC Milan Roma Inter Since '05 Barcelona won 2 champions leagues, Man U won in '08 with Chelsea running up. Meanwhile '05 and '07 included AC Milan and Liverpool, each winning a piece. Meanwhile all those teams have won their league titles on various occasions in the past 5 years, except Roma. which has not won anything at all. Is a salary cap needed in all fairness?? But wait, that's only soccer. Now look at baseball. 2007 Season Budget New York Yankees $ 189,639,045 Boston Red Sox $ 143,026,214 Won World Series New York Mets $ 115,231,663 Missed playoffs Los Angeles Angels $ 109,251,333 Chicago White Sox $ 108,671,833 Missed Playoffs Los Angeles Dodgers $ 108,454 Missed Playoffs Chicago Cubs $ 99,670,332 Detroit Tigers $ 95,180,369 Missed Playoffs Or this season New York Yankees $ 201,449,189 New York Mets $ 149,373,987 Missed Playoffs Chicago Cubs $ 134,809,000 Missed Playoffs Boston Red Sox $ 121,745,999 Detroit Tigers $ 115,085,145 Missed playoffs Los Angeles Angels $ 113,709,000 Philadelphia Phillies $ 113,004,046 Houston Astros $ 102,996,414 Missed playoffs Los Angeles Dodgers $ 100,414,592 Seattle Mariners $ 98,904,166 Missed playoffs I understand that there are only 8 playoff spots available in the 30 team Major Leagues, although this year for example, only half of the 8 richest teams made the playoffs. The Mets have not won the pennant (their league title, for those who don't know) since 2000. Yet they're rarely under the top 3 in league spending! This year the Minnesota Twins were 25th in league spending, over 50M less than what the Tigers spent, and look at them now. They're in the playoffs, and the Tigers aren't. Who needs the salary cap? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deloitte_Football_Money_League#Rankings_for_the_2005.2F06_season http://content.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/salaries/totalpayroll.aspx?year=2009 Edited by Mc Esse, Oct 8 2009, 06:52 PM.

I don't think so. Salary doesn't always make the team. They have the money why not spend it? Some clubs have a lot of money they could spend to, but instead of spending on players they decide to pocket the money and eventually fans get tired of it, stop watching games tada the club starts getting less money. And we all know that teams with the highest payroll don't always win or go all the way to the end, a good example of it are the Tampa Bay Rays, Florida Marlins in 03, Cleveland Indians beating the Yankees. I'm not just saying that because I'm a yankee fan if there was another team spending a lot of money on players it wouldn't matter to me if they have the money why not? I woul dnever blame that as the reason the team I like is losing. Yankees last year highest payroll and didn't make the playoffs. In the end it comes down to coaching and managing and knowing how to build talent |

Not only have the Yankees not made the playoffs last season, they haven't won the World Series in 10 years.. and each of those years they've been the highest spending team (I believe). Although they've only missed the playoffs once and have been 1st place in the Division for the majority of the time. Although it is not the accomplishment the Yankees fans hoped for, it's still an accomplishment in it's own right. Now my team, on the other side of New York however has only made the playoffs once this decade, despite having one of the largest payrolls in all sports, other than European soccer. In what I call the biggest rip offs of all time. Point being, baseball needs a salary cap. For teams like the Mets who repeatedly throw money in the garbage. And teams like the San Diego and Arizona who can't compete with already stacked wealth at the top of their division. More importantly in European soccer, it's always the same teams who have winning records. Real Madrid, countless champions. Because they have millions to spend on 2 Portuguese speaking jackasses. How much does Kaka and Ronaldo make combined? Probably more than what Everton Forrest is worth. *sarcasm. or am I right? Edited by Mc Esse, Oct 8 2009, 07:42 PM.

Nah. I don't see it as a problem. There's a lot of unused money from ticket sales and marketing that could go to paying the best players. They deserve it for being the best I say. |

I still do not think baseball needs a salary cap its as kotesu said. Many teams pocket the team teams like the yankees simply use it for the good players to show the fans that at least they are rewarding the fans by getting good players. Teams like Tampa Bay that has crappy fans that only become fans when they win don't deserve the same chance as say red sox or yankee fans (thats saying a lot since i hate red sox) but in 82 years their fans kept going to watch games even though they werent winning. In new york, the yankees keep having highest attendance every year even though they haven't won a world series in 10 years . Plus teams like the pirates they have good players and they trade them all away which is why they then suck. |

Does a soccer player deserve more than a doctor who saves lives? A soccer player is payed for chasing a ball down the field. |

the thing is the soccer player is actually making money. By being a skilled sport player bringing in paying fans and such, while the doctor may not actually be making money. Yeah the doctor may be saving lives but the amount of money that this doctor makes isn't that much in comparison. ^i hope that made sense |

Alright so next time you need a heart transplant. God forbid, try to find somebody with the skills and charisma to bring in paying patients such as yourself (God forbid). I doubt you will find many people to fit that criteria. |

....? i was just saying how doctors aren't really bringing in money. I'm not saying anything is wrong with the profession, doctors(mostly ER) are the people i think i admire the most out of all professions. Another example could be police officers. They do there job but their job isn't generating money....unless they found a way to completely stop a serious crime and therefor save the government money on prevention programs. |

Yeah but I wasn't talking about police officers.
Now I'm no banker! Although I do remember my mom paying.. was it 600, 700 or 800$ for a few X-rays which turned out to come out negative for some sort of disiese. Now imagine they came out positive. Money, money, money, money. Back in the 60's, hockey players for example would make a little more than the working man's salary and would have another job in the summer months. Nowadays some hockey players earn the equivelence of 75 000$ a game, even though the NHL has a salary cap! That's still to much. Same can be said for the NBA, who's cap is roughly 59M, that's roughly the same, if not lower than the NHL's cap. Again, the soccer player is a guy who plays soccer, such as myself, but alot better. The doctor saves lives for a living. Meaning he does it everyday. True fact, we can all play soccer, but we can't all turn out to be doctors! |

We both love sport, we can both play footy. So what if CR7 can play better than us. He's just a soccer player. he doesn't deserve 40 million just because every body see's him play soccer. A property developer has nothing to do with this topic though. |

Mc Esse I don't anyone in here said that sports players deserve to get paid more than doctors and etc... however that is the reality of things and if an owner wants to pay it, they pay it. Also I know doctors should get paid a lot more but in truth I'd rather go to a doctor thats not there for the money a doctor that likes doing what he's doing and wants to save lives himself and not because he's getting paid a lot of money. It's like in sports unfortunatley there's a lot of players that only want to play for the money, it shouldn't be that way. Edited by -Zero-, Oct 14 2009, 05:15 PM.
