Good point, although that does not make me any less spiritual about my faith. Off topic, I was just watching a documentry about the the Chartres Cathedral, in France. One guy said "It gives an atheist an uneasy feeling when they walk in" How do you feel had you ever walk into a cathedral or a church? |

Those things don't give me an uneasy feeling. Maybe fear of dying in an old building due to structural problems, but not fear of anything else. Before I was atheist I was catholic, so it's not like i've never seen the inside of a church before. And how would he know it gives atheists an uneasy feeling? Did he ask one? One? Point is, one voice isn't speaking for a whole. |

as for religions being of equal status. I feel, so long as people are in a position of authority, there is always going to be some level of politics involved, no mater what kind of position or organization it is. People aren't perfect, so any man made organization is going to be flawed in some way, some more than others. where the status problems come in, well, it depends on the context of "status" and what were refering to. as far as religions being treated equally in terms of respect from others, I feel that; Jews, Jahova's Witnesses, Mormons, and many other non mainstream religions are constantly bantered by the mainstream faiths. Many, and I mean "many" protastant churches, hold classes to teach their members how to drive people of these less mainstream faiths away from them, or teach them how to verbally "convert" them. if you look at terms of equality on the level of "relevance", than many of these smaller churches actually hold more significance to peoples "Salvation" than the mainstream ones. in fact, of all the churches in the world, very few have claims to "Priesthood Keys" A.K.A. "Authority to run the church of god on Earth". The two main ones being Catholic, and Mormons. I believe they are the only two that have claims to this authority, while others rarely even stat it's significance. if there is no authority from god, than Authority to be a minister is extended by funded schools made by men, and gods authority comes from a diploma and holds no value outside of a religious career. therefor, only a couple religions have any sort of significance when it comes to claims. ironically, Protastants were formed because they recognized that many of the teachings in Catholicism where contradictory to scripture, or had been changed or lost over time. however, if Catholicism was wrong in their eyes, than making a break off of it and calling it "Protastant", Protesting the only church at the time that had claims to divine authority, would logically put them even further from the truth. The Old Testament teaches that God always had a Prophet before he did anything else, a Prophet who is also a seer, and a revelator, so that he would have a way to guide people on earth in a way that they had to exercise their faith in him. now, only Mormons have claims to Preisthood keys, and a Prophet that has modern day revelation. according to the Old Testament, God would not lead his church without one. in this respect, no not all churches are equal, because they choose not to be. other churches could have tried to make these claims, but they have not, and the ones that have tried to do something similar have fell off to the way side soon after their creation. I feel that not many people try to look at claims, or even care, but if they did, and understood their significance, they may start to seek out churches that hold the claims they are looking for, rather than just using a church as a social outlet. because of this, some people convert to other faiths when they start to use critical thinking, while others just stop attending them all together. the fact remains though, that some churches are made for money, while others are made in order to help people obtain eternal life with god, so they are not equal because they were not created equal, if that makes sense. others aren't equal because of societies views and pride. I think all that really maters though, is that a church lives up to what it says it's supposed to do. if they preach doing good works, and don't do any, well that is a good sign it's just business and the preacher is just trying to pay the bills. if they don't preach doing good works, but preach verses from the Bible stating you are saved anyway, and then ask for money, then they are just scratching your ears. The only good religions, are the ones that "invite" their members to be better people, and show you how. Edited by Temphis, Oct 14 2009, 08:50 PM.
