I'd like to say I think Arsenal would be my favourite but they just don't have the presence, especially now Van Persie is out.
I hate to say it but I think Chelsea will win mainly because they can beat teams without playing well.

There win against Arsenal for example, Arsenal didn't play badly and Chelsea weren't amazing, Arsenal dominated on possession and passing yet Chelsea won 3-0. Teams that can do this tend to do well, Man united do this as well.

Barcelona will be ones to watch out for as will be Real Madrid.

I haven't seen enough of the Italian league this season to comment on their chances but I think it depends which teams they face as the tournament progresses. I wouldn't fancy Arsenal against a defensive team atm.

Matches to look out for

AC Milan vs Man U
David Beckham will be returning to Old Trafford, and for another year an Serie A team is facing a Premiership team in the 2nd round. This time I'd give the Serie A team a shot at taking it. With Ronaldo gone and with a 0-3 blowout loss to Fulham, Man U is not the dominating force they were 2 years ago, and the critics should low down on the hype. Milan have proven that they are capable of defeating honorable teams in the first round, yet they can also loose to low league teams. It will be a good game to watch. My prediction

AC Milan takes it 2-2 aggregate, on away goals. Ending Man U's streak to the finals

Lyon vs Madrid
A tough yet successful first round campaign from Lyon's group stage. Yet I wouldn't say Real's team had it much easier. Now that real is healthy, their 3-1 beating of Marseille will be reminiscent when they defeat this French team and advance.

Real Madrid takes it 4-1 in 2 legs

Inter vs Chelsea
The best team in the world vs the most corrupt team in the world. Inter will show to all of Europe once again that they are a Europa League caliber team playing in the Champions League, as well as showing that they do not deserve to be in the Champions League and are stealing a spot from an Italian team that deserves it. Chelsea on the other hand has the defense and offense to bring them all the way to the semifinals for a 3rd year in a row.

Chelsea takes it 3-0 on aggregate.
Game one will be 0-0. In London, Inter will try to take an early lead in game 2. Fatigue will wear them down, and Chelsea will blast away and prove that a desperate draw in game one is the stupidity of football.

I think Manchester are going to struggle against AC, they're defense are all pretty much injured. Yesterday when they lost to Fulham 3-0 their defence was
Fletcher
Carrick
De Laet

Two midfielders and a novice. It's going to be hard for them.

The Anglo-Italian Wars continue
@Light
Did they ever steamroll past the Nerirossi. Rooney owned AC Milan, thus making me finally caving in to the popular demand that AC Milan should be seriously considering to rebuild. Granted they have legendary players that will go down into the history of UEFA (Inzaghi, Ronaldhino) and players that were good 5 years ago, the team is getting old. Personally the only elite players on that team in my honest opinion are Ronaldinho, Pato and Pirlo. The rest can't compete for a Champions League trophy. Manchester United played very well on every front. Rooney peppered the net and got 4 goals in the 2 games, the midfielders kept the ball in attack and Van der Sar made the saves when necesary.

On the other side of the tracks, Inter Milan defeated Chelsea today and won this series 3-1 on aggregate, which literally astonished me. I expected Chelsea to open the machine very early in London and get a goal, which almost did happen. Although this Milanese defense took control of the first half. Maicon, Zanetti and Motta really put their bodies on the line, but can they do this for the rest of the tournament? Inter had been tanking down in their domestic campaign, loosing 3-1 to low league Catania this Sunday and broke down their 10 point lead of serie A to only 1 point ahead of AC Milan. Their true colors were shown vs. Chelsea, who is in 2nd place in England. Two points behind Man U, although with one game in hand.

Stugart vs Barca and Bordeaux vs Olympiacos tomorrow. The chance is not in favor for the Greek team, despite only being down 0-1 only one team has gone on to win after loosing their first game at home plus they will play without Diogo, Dudu and Domi.

i Wasn't that shocked by the Man U game when it came around, they regained a lot of their first team players especially in the defence area. Pirlo imo played really well even with park spending the game practically on him. It was a shame not to see Pato, I enjoy watching him play.

I'm also suprised about Chelsea, i'd have said they were the strongest English team and were beaten well by Inter whose defence was pretty fantastic. As well as the defence Sneidjer also showed his class.

The florentina bayern game was brilliant, I don't get too watch the Bundesliga much except maybe 1 game every now and then but Bayern looked good, they have a decent team.

Edit: Oh and the Arsenal game was class, I came really close to being able to go watch it:(
Bendtner with a hat-trick, who would have guessed haha.

It truly was a Shawshank redemption

I watched parts of the Inter vs Chelsea game and it was pretty close. Samuel and Lucio were rocks at the back for Inter and they had Drogba in their back pocket. Sneijder was the difference. He was a constant threat. always able to thread that killer ball and seek out the smallest opportunities and no Chelsea player had that spark last night.
I think Mourinho's tactics were spot on. Inter didn't sit back on their lead, they were actively attacking and looking for a goal that would put the pressure on. Chelsea didn't have that attacking mentality and that was probably their downfall; that and Inter's well-organised defence.

I was a little surprised that Man United beat AC Milan so comfortably, I thought there'd at least be a competitive game here. However Man U are in such great form at the moment, spearheaded by Rooney who has been immense so far this season. Nani and Berbatov are beginning to shine too and that helps United as Rooney doesn't have to carry the team on his own. I only caught the first 20 minutes of the game but Man U looked comfortable from the start.

With the Arsenal game I think Porto were a little over-hyped. Sure they're a good team, but they are nowhere near the team that Arsenal are. Porto couldn't keep up with Arsenal's smooth, quick passing game and never looked a threat. It was good to see Bendtner pick himself up after missing 6-7 chances on the weekend and grab a hat-trick.

Frustration in France
Bordeaux defeats Olympiacos 2-1 today, 3-1 on aggregate. Today's game was the most aggresive yet and in my opinion the best game of the round of 16. Both teams are not considered elite compared to the top teams of Spain, Italy and England, but today they played for their tournament lives in wantiing a chance to compete with the best of Europe.

Gourcoff opens the scoring early for Bordeaux, on a set peice which goes right over the GK. I though Nikopolidis should have saved that one, although the veteran goalkeeper kept the Greek side in the match, especially during the first frame where he was peppered with a few good oppurtunities and had some help from the post. Olympiacos looked to gain some much needed momentum at the 42nd minute or so when Matt Derbyshire scored but appeared slightly offside, it was such a close call though.

At 65, Mitroglou gave the Olympiacos a chance to keep climbing the uphill struggle when he scored just 2 minutes after coming on. At that point, Olympiacos were shorthanded by one man since Derbyshire got sent off at 60. Then at 68 Mellberg of Bordeaux gets a red card as well and all of a sudden the game is 1-1 with an even number of players, it is anyone's game at this point. the aggregate was 2-1 Bordeaux, had Olympiacos tied it up 2-2 they would go through on away goals

at the 88 Chamkah heads in the clinching goal for bordeaux where Nikiopolidis had no chance to stop it. Gotta feel bad for these events, Nikopolidis ceded a goal 5 minutes into the game, and with 6 minutes left at the final frame.

This is turning out to be a versatile tournament, there's only 2 EPL teams, an Italian side finally made it through after 3 years, and two French teams are in the picture.

Bordeaux are my tip to win, they look very good. Laurent Blanc is a great manager, Gourcuff is world class and Chamakh is a skillful, strong striker who's gonna get them goals. They'll be underestimated as well. I heard a pundit on Sky Sports say "Bordeaux are the team you'd want to draw, they'd be the easiest game for the big teams". That guy clearly knows nothing.

No team is an easy draw, although picking Bordeaux to win is a bold statement. I know they have the best record in the tournament, but they have not been tested yet. Alot of critics are praising their ability to match up to the top teams in Europe since they beat Juventus and Bayern in the 1st round. Juventus had a team full of injurys though.

How can you say they haven't been tested? They beat Bayern Munich comfortable twice in the group stage and drew and beat Juventus. Those are two strong teams. They beat a Juve team with Chiellini, Del Piero, Amauri, Diego and Camoranesi and a Bayern team with Luca Toni, Schweinsteiger, Klose, Lahm and van Bommel. All in the starting line-up. Tell me that isn't a challenge.

Toni did not play, You're overrating the Juve team

Amauri who?
Del Pierro when? He can't even play a full (quality) game anymore!
Buffon playing with pre surgerized knee
Was Camaronessi playing during that 0-2 loss, I can't remember

Toni did play for Bayern, I looked up the match reports on the UEFA website. And Camoranesi and Del Piero played too. Amauri is a good striker and can cause problems.

The draw for the Quarters finished a little while ago and there are some interesting match-ups:

Lyon vs Bordeaux
This'll be a cracking game. Both French teams have impressed so far in the tournament and the atmosphere in both legs will be amazing. Bordeaux are my tip to come out of this match, they've already beaten them earlier in the season away at the Stade Gerland and are the hottest team in the Champions League with a draw and then 7 consecutive wins in their 8 games. But Lyon are a good team which they showed when knocking out Real Madrid, so have a strong chance of going through too. The highlight tie of the round.

Bayern Munich vs Manchester United
A replay of the '99 final when Man U came out on top and this is another good game. Man U, namely Rooney, have been on fire lately. Nani and Berbatov have also hit a good patch in time to offer Rooney some support. Bayern have some quality players in their team; Ribery and Robben are two players that on their night can run rings around any defence. However Man U have a much stronger squad overall and should have enough to see them through to the Semis against one of the French teams.

Arsenal vs Barcelona
The marquee game of the round and the one we'll all be watching. I really would have preferred to see this as a Semi or even a Final. Both teams play the best football in Europe and I don't think the match will dissapoint. There will be plenty of goals as both teams are questionable defensively. Despite fancying Arsenal to go far, they were unlucky to draw Barca and I really can't see them coming on top, so it has to be Barcelona.

Inter Milan vs CSKA Moscow
Inter got lucky in the draw, any other team and I would have tipped them do get knocked out. CSKA played well against Sevilla but Inter have a lot more quality. Sneijder is a world class playmaker and they looked defensively sound against Chelsea. The only problem I see is the return leg being in Moscow which is always a hard place to play. If CSKA can get an away goal or keep Inter to a draw then they'll definately fancy their chances and the second leg will be an interesting one.

Amauri is not a good striker man, look at his stats.. the guy has never had a good season. If anything A few years ago he scored between 11 and 16 goals with Palermo, but that's as good as I remember him domestically. Del Pierro's prime is way over as well. Juve is not even in Champions League standings right now either! I don't consider them a good test..

Anyhow I agree with your picks except I think Arsenal is going to beat Barcelona. I can't believe you are predicting an Italian team into the semis, remeber what you said earlier this year :p .

Yeah but I was surprised they got past Chelsea :P They have to beat Moscow after their performance against Chelsea, but I can't see them beating Arsenal or Barca.

How could you say that? Chelsea are the best team in England right now, and you mentionned it wouldn't surprised if Bordeaux won the Champions League.

Bordeaux > Inter ?
