Just a quick question.. when I was younger, I caught a few episodes of Dragon Ball Z, and pretty much enjoyed it, but never really watched it seriously. Recently a few friends of mine have been hyping the series, on top of me playing one of the games makes me want to watch the show. So, now that I'm pretty much starting from scratch, would it be best to start with Dragonball, or can I jump in at DBZ? People tell me DBZ is much more entertaining, but does Dragonball have any storyline that'd make DBZ more understood? |

In my opinion I think if you just jump into DBZ it won't hurt. The major things about the past you'll need to know are made obvious in the DBZ story lines, like Piccolo and Goku rivalry and things of that nature. I started with DBZ and then DB and I don't think it mattered too much chronologically. DB fit the put the little pieces in place for the characters to have more depth. If you watch DB I think it starts off slow but it's a really good series to establish the characters, understand what the shows about and just the basics. Later on in DB you see the characters grow and how they influence the entire plot. You really see where everyone came from one by one. In DBZ you see Goku, Krillin and Piccolo and you can tell they have a past. By the time the story goes on you wonder about the origins of these other Z-Warriors and how they came along. I think either way is fine. DB will help you understand the show and who everyone is and DBZ will get you right into the action with great stories, fights and plots but might leave you wondering where everyone came from and a lack of history. |

I started with DBZ. I my opinion it is better and I think it is more likely to get you into it, especially since you've been playing the games which center around DBZ. Like Rebel said, all the important things that happened in DB are made clear in DBZ so you won't miss anything. DB for me is best looked as a sort of 'Origins', giving you background information. Although this is purely my view and others may disagree. |

Thanks.. I just didn't want to be lost, or constantly wondering how or why something's happening. Like the tail/giant ape thing for instance. I never understood it, but then again, I never watched the entire series.

i would suggest starting with dragonball, though i started with Z if you start with dragonball, i think you could really appreciate the characters more that appear in DBZ. you'd really understand them a bit more, like tien, chaozu, yamcha, puar, w-e, who dont get the spotlight as much as they did in DB DB IS the beginning...soo...yeah |

I just think that the fact that it is DBZ that he has partly seen and enjoyed, a DBZ game that he has played and most likely DBZ that his friends are hyping up would make it more easier for him to get into the series watching DBZ rather than DB. For me DB is a little slower, there's less going on, less action. DBZ is high-paced, energetic and where the series peaked and it is much easier to be drawn in. |

I think it's in agreement that anyway you watch it is really fine whether it's DB or DBZ that you watch first. It won't cause you that many problems. |

My favorite is Dragonball but I suggest starting with Z. It is much more popular, and most of the discussion on this forum is about Z. |

Yeah, either way wound be fine. I originally watched Z, then GT a few years ago, then half a year ago Dragonball. I got on fine watching Z first, before long you'll feel like you know the characters well anyway. Dragonball is definitely worth a watch, though. I don't know if its just because I'd seen Z so many times, and never Dragonball, but I really enjoyed watching Dragonball for the first time. It may not be as epic, but it's very entertaining. |

DBZ stands well enough on its own but watching Dragonball would probably make some of the characters a little more likable.
Dragonball has about 5 seasons Dragonball Z has about 9 seasons And Dragonball GT has about 2 seasons I don't think you should watch Bardock first, if anything I think you should wait until you finish the Frieza saga to see it. |

I started watching dragonball from the beginning. When Iwas younger I would see some DBZ episode and they were great but I really wanted to start from the very beginning you know? So I started watching Dragonball and it was awesome! Then I got so hyped to go to DBZ! Now Im on episode 200 on DBZ. If you awnt to start from the beginning then watch DB then Z then GT but if you just want to egt into more of the action and all then start from Z then GT. |

I have watched all of DBZ and GT but i haven't watched dragon ball yet because i always said to myself i don't want to watch that it would be boring without super saiyans and the great fight scenes. But now i'm older and really attached to the story and the characters i want to go to where it all started and watch dragon ball. |

I thought the same as you at first but I watched DB earlier this year and loved it!! It a much more relaxed and humorous approach to the show which I enjoyed and there was even times where I could just laugh or relax through an entire episode. Much more laid back then DBZ but I highly recommend watching it through at least once!! ~Tim |
