The Prince Earns his Crown; Vegeta illustration

Hey guys,

I've been looking for a dbz community to show my art for a while now. This one seems to be fairly active so I guess it's as good a place as any :)

A while back I decided that I wanted to illustrate various DBZ characters in a realistic way. I've been studying art a lot and I've been steadily getting better, so I thought now was the time to give it a try. Vegeta was the first I tried, and I decided to illustrate him when he first broke super saiyan on that lonely planet. It was completed with an initial pencil sketch (after doing a lot of thumbnails to try to get a good pose) then I shot reference of myself in the same pose, corrected some anatomy mistakes and then went into rendering it in photoshop with tablet. here it is:

Vegeta's transformation was always my favorite. Maybe it was because he was alone, maybe because he actually gave up prior to it. Whatever the case, I wanted to try to do it justice. I also recently received an Alex Ross book, and I was inspired by the flamboyant poses of otherwise laughable characters.

Took a while to get a pose I liked, took longer to make it work. Wanted him almost to be recoiling in horror at what was happening, mid-way between exhilaration and fear. Used myself as reference to patch up the face and hands. In the anime the transformations never really caused much destruction, but with this I wanted it to look like the whole planet was being shaken up by his changing.

The armor was the biggest challenge, since there was no way to make the armor that appeared in the anime look plausible. After a few vain attempts I gave it a redesign, but kept the important aspects intact: the full-body jumpsuit, the pectoral area, and what has become the gold-lacquered lamed stomach armor and shoulder straps.

Photoshop, no idea how long it took but less than a week, working maybe an hour or so a day. I also may make a few tweaks/refinements here or there, but for the large part it's done.

Hope you guys like it :) I'm currently working on a goku image in between studies and freelance work.

Rampaging Explosion of Euphoric Glory!

really excelent detail and awesome coloring and emotion. It's crazy that even his clothing seems to be ripping off from all of the intensity.

the only things about it I don't like as much are the position of his legs, they look like he is posing for a picture almost, and his hair looks more puffy than spiky, especially since it's flowing like it's underwater, but it's a great picture. great job.

I would love to see one of Freiza transforming into his forth form and changing the landscape with his sheer power, that would be an awesome to see realisticly.

WOW, amazing picture. The hair however, looks like its long and straight, and its just flopping up above his head. I also would have prefered his hair to be one color, blonde or brunette, but its not my picture is it??? really cool. i think you hit the armor dead on.

Do ya take requests??? Do you think you could do one of SSJ3 Goku?

Thanks, yeah the "structure" of the hair was really hard to define... DBZ as an anime is so stylized, so it's really hard to bring it into real life. For the hair, I know in the anime I saw it "moving" against the wind a few times so it's not as if it's rigid, and I also don't like the idea of Vegeta having spiked hair like you see on some guys these days, so I decided he'd have stiff, bushy hair that was styled upward, but would still be pushed around and flow in the force of the transformation...

Sorry, these days it's paid commissions only. (you can see my website at rainvilleillustration.com and there's contact info if you do want a paid commission) Luckily though, like I said I'm working on a Goku pic in my spare time and it shows him on namek just after becoming a super saiyan.

His pose was even harder to nail down, and I had a few false starts already. Here are some failed attempts at images that I tried to create for goku, but ended up leaving:

The new one is coming along a lot better though. Other characters I have in mind to draw in the future would be krillen, piccolo and bulma (since drawing hot ladies is fun too :)) I really don't think I'll be creating anything that appeared after the Cell saga. It's just a personal opinion that things got a little too wacky for me.

Thanks again guys :)
