DragonBall CGI; Creating Dragonball in CG

Hello my fellow dragonball fans =)
Først of all here is a little background on me. I'm 26, I'm belgian but I live in Denmark. I create digital art for movies, comercials and computer games and have been doing so proffesionally for about 6 years now. I first got my hands on digital visualisation with deluxe paint 4 on my amiga 1200 =) I was 15 at the time so it's fair to say that I have 10 years of experience working with digital art. I have touched quite a few arias if I have to say so myself =) these include ( not a full list ) : programming, animation, modelling, shading, texturing, storytelling, cinematography, 2d concept art, level design, logo design, rendering, rigging, flash, html.

Now, not long ago I saw the abomination that is DragonBall Evolution. It even hurts to write that title :S
After which I decided to begin working on this thought I've had for quite a while now. You've probably noticed the picture by now so I'm guessing you have a pretty good idea on what it's all about =)
The idea is the recreate the original DragonBall ( not dragonball Z sorry ) in CGI. The style will be more of that from Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. Realistic without loosing the anime feel. I am expecting to change roughly 10% of the original DB. Don't worry, the characters and plot will be identical. I will be using the original sound from the english version with some editing. This is not a comercial thing, it is my own personal project.

Any ideas, comments, critique or just thoughts are welcome =)

This image just like all the images im going to post on this thread are work in progress and not final =)

Rampaging Explosion of Euphoric Glory!

what color will you make his eyes? originally, Goku had no Pupil, only an iris, as well as everyone else, so eye color will need to either be completely original, or you could base it on something, like making their iris vaugely based off of their Chi color. (goku's being blue, Vegeta's being purple or violet, Krillins being a yellow.) but then I guess you would need to mix it with a normal eye color to make them still look human, and just have the chi color be a hue thats either on the edge of their iris color, or it's surrounding their pupil and fades into a normal color, I dunno, something like that. thats an idea I'm trying to use in my DBMU.

there are so many ways to go with this though, that I think it just comes down to personal prefrence and your artistic approach.

with the dragon balls, I saw a version someone drew of them that I liked and will be using now. the stars were 3d, and solid, and looked like they were made of some sort of rock or something, and were opaque. they were also ON THE OUTSIDE of the dragon balls, rather than stuck inside and being somewhat obscued by the translucent orangish yellow of them. I thought it made the dragon balls look much more oriental, and realistic, as well as practical.

I think you mean that goku and the rest had only pupils and no iris =) I haven't thought about that yet but I like your idea =)

Yeah my stars are going to be 3 dimensional also but I'm gonna keep em inside the balls. Do you have a picture of that version of the dragonballs you're talking about?

I need some outside opinion regarding this "remake" of dragonball. In the original dragonball, goku is seen naked quite a few times. Now this being manga and a bit old, etc... it makes it kinda "acceptable" ( i dont know how else to put it ) but if you make that today and in CG which is more solidified than manga then I am afraid that people are gonna look at it and think kiddy porn and thats what I'll be known for for the rest of my life hehe :S

Now if I remove it, in my opinion, I will remove something that is an important part of goku's intriguing personality : his innocence. Sure other parts of him show that side also, like his behaviour and so on. But him walking around naked as if nothing is the matter is partially to show that he really has been living int he wild and away from civilization but also to show that goku sees the world in a much more pure way than "civilized" people do. It really shows his pure heart in my opinion. He sees the world for what it is, nothing wrong in being naked, clothes are just there to keep you warm, nothing else.

Anime fans might not think too much about seeing naked stuff in animes, but for any outsiders taking a peep and seeing a naked boy I am sure quite a few alarm bells are gonna ring in their twisted minds.

So what to do :S keep it safe... or say ***** the people who dont get it and take the risk :S I have no clue..

MAGICAL GIRLS REPRESENT

Show some parts of his nudity. Don't show off his undersized penis, but don't go getting rid of his nakedness altogether. Hide his nudity when it gets overwhelming, or be clever like the English dub and edit something in the scene to conveniently hide it. Could still be funny.

Life is a performance, and the world is full of critics. Give it your all like it's your last show.
