Here's the prologue, I'll post the rest as I write it and whenver I'm able to. Prologue Around the smooth rock, silver in the moonlight, the alpha’s sat in expectation. The powerful wolves sat apart, all of them glancing at each other occasionally: this was the first time that a peaceful meeting between packs had been organised in these parts for generations. It was bitterly cold, and they sat shivering, the chill wind sweeping through the clearing. Only one amongst them seemed at ease in the cold, lying down casually despite the tense atmosphere. One of them, a large, grizzled wolf, stepped forward, scowling. “It is near enough moonhigh. Where is our host?” he growled. “Patience,” barked the wolf that was lying down. His voice was soft, even soothing. “She will be here. I feel that this is as important to her as it is to us”. The scarred alpha growled deep in his throat. “Do not seek to calm me like an anxious pup!” He snapped in reply. “Then stop acting like one!” Barked another wolf. This alpha sat hunched and miserable-looking near the clearings end, like he was prepared to leave at any moment. As the large, furious wolf prepared to growl a scathing reply, a rustling was heard by all the pack-leaders. The rustling was loud, deliberately so. It had been agreed as such: to surprise the alpha’s of the river-wolves was to seek death. Out of the undergrowth came their curious new friend, who had previously met with them all, and had made an interesting enough proposal for them all to spare her, and also to go against nature and meet here, in peace under the full moon to hear more. The tigress stepped elegantly from the undergrowth, and looked around the various alpha’s that she had brought here. She stalked to the smooth boulder, and leapt atop it. She sat on her vantage point and began washing her paw with her tongue. The pack-leaders all padded forward, looking up at her, the full moon above them reflected in all of their eyes. The tigress set her paws down, and spoke for the first time: “I apologies for being late: I was saying farewell to my son.” “Ah, the infamous Sabre, you mean?” Asked a small, dark grey wolf. “Such a shame. I would have liked to meet our fearsome new friend” he grinned. “I’m sure you do, but his task is as important as our own in the plan I have come to propose to you”. “You have sent him on an errand,” growled the large, scarred wolf, “that is part of a plan we have not yet agreed to. You are this confident that we shall agree?” He asked roughly. The tigress blinked slowly at him. “Yes. Yes I am”. The scarred wolf snorted, but indicated for her to continue. “Before we begin, I feel that we should introduce ourselves; I doubt that any of you did so before I arrived.” She was right: the alphas would have rather eaten a pack member than spoke to their rivals. The small, dark-grey was the first to speak. “I am Spite, alpha wolf of the Pack of Dark Paths” he barked. The scarred wolf that had spoken out earlier spoke next; “I am Fury, the alpha of the Pack of Glorious Onslaught” he growled proudly. He was followed by the miserable-looking wolf; “I am Hate, the alpha-male of the Pack of Blooded Fangs” he muttered grudgingly. A very dark grey, nearly black, wolf spoke next; “I am Dread, first amongst the Pack of Endless Carnage” he hissed quietly. A couple of wolves pricked their ears, having heard his name before, in dark tales and nightmarish stories. The next to speak was easily the largest amongst them; “I am Greed, leader of the Pack of Moonless Nights” he barked, taller than any other as he sat at full height. A wolf with a sightless, scarred eye amid a series of scars introduced himself next; “I am Envy, alpha of the Pack of Unending Rage” he barked swiftly, like he wished to get this meeting over with. A silver-grey wolf spoke next; “I am Despair, the alpha-wolf of the Pack of Fanatical Bloodlust.” He barked. A couple of the alpha’s narrowed their eyes: they had heard of his pack before. The last to speak was the handsome, silver-grey wolf that was still lay casually on the ground. He scratched behind his ear with his hind leg, seemingly oblivious to the others that were staring at him, waiting for him to speak. When he did, it was in an insolent drawl; “My name is Malice” he stated, and resumed scratching behind his ear. Envy growled softly at his disrespect, before the tigress spoke again, staring at the full moon overhead as she did; “Every full moon, the warrior clans upriver meet in peace to share news and discuss problems, as dictated by the Warrior Code. Although they make war on each other for many reasons, the warrior lifestyle binds them all together, giving them all common ground to found peace upon.” “Did you bring us here to talk about the virtues of clan life?” growled Hate loudly. “We are not like clans: the packs are as powerful as any cat-clan”. “Greenleaf is a season of bountiful prey, yes?” Asked the tigress fiercely. “Then why do your ribs show through your pelts? The prey is scarcer than normal; the deer and elk have learned that the river they would drink from is cut off by predators. The packs that live in the forest here are many, and have warred for generations. Your battle-hardened skill is matched only by your inability to co-operate. Borders are set up only to be ignored and shifted and fought over. Despite the hunger that grips you all, you cannot find common ground. In this way, the packs are inferior to the clans”. This was met by several loud yowls of anger. Fury barked threateningly at the tigress, who raised her head proudly, not responding to his threats. “You dare to call us inferior?” he growled furiously. He padded closer to the rock, narrowed eyes on the tigress all the time. “You dare to call us inferior to our face?” “But she has a point” barked Despair. “Let her continue.” The Fury’s lips curled in the beginnings of a snarl, but he sat down again. The tigress nodded to the silver-grey alpha, before continuing: “I can offer you a way to change this. I can offer you the means to take more territory; territory that has been denied to you for many, many generations.” She looked around, pausing for suspense; “the clan territories.” The alphas broke into harsh laughter. The first to stop was Dread, who addressed the tigress; “How shall we do this, then? Shall we storm the forests of the leopards, only to be ambushed and slaughtered? Shall we fight the lions on their moors, and be massacred there? Or do you plan to lead us to our doom in the marshes of your kin?” The tigress stiffened, before retorting. “You do not understand the clans. They believe that threats come only from each other: even when bears and wolf packs attack them, they still close their eyes to the outside world. To them, you are no threat to their lifestyle or territories.” Again, several of the alpha’s growled. “But it is time for you to prove them wrong. I have chosen you all because none of your packs have ever come into conflict with each other”. Envy glared at Fury. “Yet” He barked softly. The tigress glanced at him severely, before continuing; “It is not unheard of for packs to unite. Alphapacks are what you call them, yes? Under one alpha, your packs could ravage the clans. Their lands are prey-rich and vast: many packs could survive there, and you could have your vengeance on the clans. I have walked the dark paths of this forest; I know the lands of the clans better than any other outsider does. With my guidance and your strength, the clans could stand no chance. What say you?” The alphas were silent. They were all deep in thought. Spite spoke up; “An Alphapack, as you said, needs only one Alpha-wolf. Are we to relinquish control of our packs to one amongst us?” He asked roughly. “Yes” answered the tigress bluntly. No angry protests followed this, which surprised her. All of the wolves seemed to be considering this. Spite stepped forward; “I have lead my pack for seasons, and warred with many others. Our survival has been because if my leadership. If I was to lead us, our vengeance would be swift and sure.” He barked proudly, sitting at full height. “I’m not giving command of my pack to a runt like you!” snarled Fury. “They wouldn’t obey you even if I told them to! The Pack of Glorious Onslaught is reknowned across the forest for it’s success. If it weren’t for me, such tales wouldn’t be abound. I shall lead the Alphapack, and we shall drown the clans in their blood!” “And in the blood of our pack-mates!” Barked Dread scathingly. “The forest trembles in account of my deeds; if any was born to lead us to final victory against the clans, it is me!” “I have heard of your achievements,” growled Greed, “and I know that you would lead us into shadows and treachery. You are no leader, just a common killer with admirers you have follow you around. I have led the Pack of Moonless Nights for seasons, and killed all contestants. From one look at you all, I can tell that I am easily the best fighter here!” As the alphas snarled and yowled challenges and boasted of achievements, Malice raised from the ground and padded over to the boulder on which the tigress was still sitting, glaring furiously at the squabbling alphas. He leapt up to her side, and howled decisively. The alphas fell silent and turned to look at him. “There is no need for you to fight over who shall lead us” he stated silkily, “for he stands in front of you now.” “You?” snarled Greed. “Don’t make me laugh. Look at your pup-soft fur! Are you only just out of your nursery? You don’t even have any battle scars! I’ve torn dozens of wolves like you apart; arrogant pups with...” As Greed ranted, and the other alphas laughed crudely along with him, Malice bunched up the muscles in his hind leg and leapt. He didn’t leap directly at Greed; he landed next to his flank. Before the laughing alphas knew what had happened, Greed was howling in agony: “My eyes!” He wailed, “I can’t see!” As Greed flailed, the alphas saw what had happened; Malice had clawed at Greed’s eyes as he leapt past him. The wide-eyed wolves turned their gazes from the wounded alpha to Malice, who had slowly turned and padded back to Greed. As the defeated alpha called out piteously, he bowled him over with a powerful shoulder, and bit deep into his throat. The wails ended abruptly. Malice released his rivals corpse, and padded back to the boulder, pushing past the shocked alphas and taking his place by the tigress’s side again. She looked unaffected by what she had seen. “I believe that a leader has been decided” she meowed coldly. “I don’t believe I introduced myself at any point. I am Shadowtooth, and shall show you the way to complete victory. We shall assault the clans next half-moon; gather your packs and bring them here. We shall share prey to make sure that we are battle-ready. We shall also send word to other packs; the time of vengeance is at hand.” Malice howled at the full moon, and the others joined in, their conviction strong. The clans would be destroyed, once and for all! |
