When people think about American history, the first thing that usually comes to mind is that the United States of America are a spin off of the British Empire. Although some inofrmation which alot of people don't recognize is that there was a time when the land that is the United States mainland, was a Spanish, Dutch and French colony as well. It was the Dutch who held the largest metropolis in the country, New York City, at the time known as New Amsterdam.

After a series of wars with the British Crown, the Dutch had given up their North American territory to the British. Just the other day I had a discussion with a friend about this. What if it was the Dutch who pushed the English out of the Americas? neglect the facts for a moment, forget that the Brits had more guns, a larger Navy, and more personel. What if North America had been engulfed by the Dutch? I'm sure there would have been more changes in our culture than just language!
