The fight between them is pretty equal but Gotenks does get the better of Buu and does go to finish him off until his SS3 loses power and returns to base state just before separating into Goten and Trunks. Mind you Buu makes this odd comment to Gohan that he knew he was coming, that he could sense his power from afar. That he had this plan formulated to fight and defeat Gohan. It is possible that he wasnt trying to kill Gotenks, just stalling until time passed for another fusion. During the fight after Gotenks has Buu Buu Volley balled him into the Earth with Piccolos help (funny stuff) Gotenks blurts out the weakness of the fusion (time limit). Buu learns this and decides on a plan to defeat Gohan, he fought Gotenks but just in order to preserve his life (otherwise Gotenks would have annihilated him) so that Gotenks fusion would wear off and have time to refuse. This leads to Buu fighting Gohan to confirm his power, self-destructing, coming back after an hour and goading Goten and Trunks into fusing into SS3 Gotenks where he absorbs him an Piccolo and transcends Gohan as BuuTenks. I believe that Gotenks SS3 is more powerful than Super Buu though.

The only odd thing is why there is Evil Buu AND Kid Buu. I think Evil Buu still had a connection to the supreme kais. Maybe he took portions of each with him when he burst out. This would explain why he is stronger than Kid Buu and why he has the same outfit as Mr. Buu. After he absorbed Mr. Buu, he focused all of the supreme kais' influence inside of him, therefore retaining their power but keeping their influence locked away. When Vegeta severed the connection to Mr. Buu, he took away the power and influence of the supreme kais in an instant, thereby breaking any connection Evil Buu had had initially. This would also explain why the Mr. Buu that fought Kid Buu was stronger than the Mr. Buu that fought Evil Buu; he would've had full access to the power of the kais, whereas in the initial split he had only a portion of their power.

Meta Cooler was the strongest at that time, but the later fighters would own him like nothing, even if there were thousands of him. Mystic Gohan, Super Buu, Gotenks, SSJ3 Goku (or even SSJ2), SSJ2 Vegeta all outclass Meta Cooler by LOADS. He wouldn't even be able to hurt them, and they would just blow up the Big Gete Star. Even Perfect Cell would own Meta-Cooler like he was nothing. Goku and Vegeta were just normal Super Saiyan's when they fought Cooler. By the time Goku fought Perfect Cell he had mastered the Super Saiyan form, becoming much much stronger.
