According to the Tien is an alien from another pllanet. I don't really agree with that. Erlang Shenis a Chinese all seeing God, it is said that this god had an allseing third-eye. It's also legend that this eye can be given to humansto are pure enough to be enlighted by it. I think Tien when a young man was infact enlighted and given the gift of the third-eye but later on under the crane school's master he lost the ability to use the third eye. I dont think it's a weakpoint at all. His third-eye also shoots a white laser that was used in a torny against Goku in DB

Google Chrome Favourite Manga Gantz, Berserk, One Punch Man, Dragon Ball, One Piece, Attack on Titan, Re: Monster, (no more room)	Tien's based off of a three eyed deity from "journey to the west", Chautzu is based off of a chinese soul sucking zombie, Oolong is a personification of chinese comunism, Yamcha is based off of a desert murrader who was cursed and turned into a monster from "Journey to the west". why, even Goku is based off of the Monkey King and main character from "journey to the west" and Krillin is based off of one of the monks in that same story. The Ox King is from it too, as well as a plethra of other references or characters, it's all supposed to be a comical parody of it really, which is where DBZ doesn't fit in, since it changes all that. In fact, I find it hard to place DBZ and DB next to each other as part of the same series, since Akira's goals of what he was trying to produce completely changed, which is why dragon ball had a bunch of weird random stuff that was never explained, and dragon ball Z explained everything that was introduced from the beginning to the end. DBZ however makes no explanations for any characters backgrounds or status's from dragon ball, except for Goku, which I feel is convincing evidence that Akira never put much time into them, since they are pretty much just comical versions of characters from "Journey to the West", rather than original characters like the ones he made in DBZ. I would have liked to hear more about Yamcha's story, or Tiens, or Launch or Roshi, or King Ox, or even Kami's story prior to coming to earth. this list could go on for quite some time. oh well, I guess it's up to us to use our imaginations. Because i also remember him saying that about his armor, but i also remember him saying something about everyone in his tribe has 3 eyes, in the original dragonball series. so i think maybe they changed it from that one to this.

That separate them from, say, Yamcha, a pretty normal looking human.
