I recently decided to read/watch the early part of the db series. I read the manga up to chapter 28 and I've watched the anime till the start of the tournament. I got to say that db seems much more humourous than dbz, but, there are some parts that seem more suited for adults than pre adults, I won't be going into those though. What did you guys think of db? :)

It truly was a Shawshank redemption

I only started reading the Dragonball manga the other day and I must say it is rather perverted lol I mean for one, you actually see Bulma's breasts. However they may have different censorship rules in Japan or something.

But yeah it is a lot more humourous, more of your typical cartoon. I prefer DBZ a lot more myself.

Likewise, but, I watched all of dbz and dbgt and only decided recently to watch it. What did you think of db in comparison to dbz?
@SSJ-Mitas yes, that's the thing. I found that it is very perverted. Kinda odd if its meet for pre-adults or teenagers, but, I guess japanese standards are a lot more different than they are in North America or in some other places. One thing I found about db is that the humour is pretty interesting and its much more than dbz is. I do like the fighting though, so, I would love a series that would mix db's humour and dbz's fighting into one. In terms of preference, so far, I'm mixed, I mean I love the powering up component of dbz, especially whenever its Gohan(SS2) or Goku(SS3) doing it. I think the effects are well done and I hope to see some of these same effects when I progress further in db. I am at the start of the tournament saga and will likely get through that today, can't wait to see goku vs. kirrin or some of the other fighters :)

Well, I've moved further along in the anime, almost up to the Tien Saga which I'm looking forward to. I gotta say that so far its interesting. Not sure if I like db more than dbz but I like kid goku more than adult goku, probably because of the humour :) I liked the tournament, it was interesting to see Goku fight against Jackie Chan(Master Roshi in disguise) and almost win. I can't believe that all he needed to say was "on" to win but collapsed before he did so. I liked the red ribbon army sagas, especially the last one. Seeing goku enter the base and wipe it on his own was really entertaining and I give the producers a thumbs up for that. Best of all, was everyone reaction after this:
Yamacha: "You're a smart kid not taking on the Red Ribbon Army by yourself"
Goku: "What are you talking about, I beat them all up ...."
Everyones' eyes and mouth drop at this point, lol. It was a hilarious scene to watch :) However, the penguin land episodes are what struck me the most. I mean the idea is interesting, but, where is penguin land exactly in the db world? Also, why is there someone who looks like yamacha there, was it supposed to be some joke? Finally, I like the episodes after the baba saga because it gives you a chance to see what the db world contains. What do you guys think?

Well, I've hit the piccolo jr. saga. Pretty excited to see Goku vs. Tien, Krillin vs. Piccolo Jr. and that odd Hero vs. Yamacha fight. It should be interesting to see how stronger Goku got by pitting him against Tien and see some of Piccolo Jr. attacks :) So far, I got to say that I really like db. I wish they gave us more episodes in the 3 years before the tournament(Goku at kami lookout), but, too late now :p I thought the King Piccolo vs. Goku fight was interesting especially the way Goku won it and how he was saved. I also liked the anoymous proposal episode. I wouldn't have expected Goku to propose after he mentions that he thought bride meant food  I think that episode was interesting all around, it was pretty funny when she told Yamacha that she knows he loves her but she loves Goku. She must have some good memory  What did you guys think of those episodes? :)

I liked the humor of DB outside of the crude stuff, with the exception of a few jokes, like when Bulma says "these are the dragon balls" and goku looks down as if sulking and says "some poor dragon...." LOL. but most of it is perverted and lame. the fact that alot of it dosn't make any sense was personally anoying to me, but Goku and Krillin where the main sorce of humor, goku with his funny innocent remarks, and Krillin with his sarcasm and blunt comebacks. also, some of the character concepts by themselves where funny, like Launch, or alot of the people in red ribbon army, like how commander black was a black guy, or commander purple being a cowardly ninja, though alot of that scene was just drawn out and pointless. the stuff with Emperor Pilaf was kinda strange, and most the humor can be attributed to the fact that Mai and the dog ninja worked for him for practically no reason. alot of it was stange, which made it amusing, while DBZ was much more serious and had less funny moments.

I personally liked the atmosphere of Dragon Ball over DBZ, but I thought DBZ was more awesome, since it had more intense stuff.

I have to somewhat agree with your comment. I mean I have finished watching db a couple of days back and really miss it. I could watch the episodes again, but, its not the same thing. Anyways, I have to say that I loved db's atmosphere a LOT more than dbz, not sure why, but, it was likely Goku's attitude throughout the whole thing. For example, he defeats the Red Ribbon Army yet he wonders why everyone is baffled at that. He was always smiling which made db even better.
I loved the tournaments and this is where I think dbz lacked a lot. We've only had one tournament, well two, but, they were both cut, so, we never got to see the final fight. Also, why did they change the rules of the tournament, so, in order to make it to the last 16, you have to punch that machine instead of the win three preliminaries like before. I prefer that method much more because it adds a new layer of entertainment :) It was fun to watch Goku fight against Krillin due to the fact that they were friends. Him becoming invisible and then beating Kriliin with those 8 punches and 1 powerkick was fabulous. It was just hard to describe, because, even Tien was caught off guard, until he realized that it was all a trick, that he was just moving faster and made it appear that Krillin fell out rather than being pushed out. Also, that whole anoymous proposal episode was really funny especially how he ended up proposing and this is where my next question comes in. Does he really love her or did he just propose because he noticed how disappointed she was and that he did kinda promise about her being his bride, even though he thought bride meant food? Funny afterwards, she says "I'm in love with you Goku!" and he says "Love, what does that mean?", lol. There are a lot more episodes that I would like to discuss, but, I'm interested in seeing the responses to these question first :)

you should watch "Curse of The Blood Rubies". I love that version. but yeah, you nailed alot of the parts I liked about it just their. I think it was Goku's happy attitude and innocent childlike charm that made him so likable and the series with it. all the characters had thier own uniqueness of feeling to them. DBZ had more of a mediocre aproach, where everything felt the same.

Lol yeah DB had some perverted scenes, like when Goku took Bulmas panties off during a movie special in Japan, but I dont hink it was for adults, In Japan, they show stuff like that to teenagers and even to kids, the censorship is completely different

That scene is actually in an episode. I think it's #3 but I'm not sure. It's the one where they take Turtle to the sea.

Actually it was made for young boys. Japan has very different standards concerning what is suitable for which demographic. The US is stricter in comparison.

Of course, that doesn't mean it can't be enjoyed by older age groups(or the opposite gender for that matter), especially if it's a show that many people grew up with.

Although I think I should point out, the nudity in Dragonball Kai is going to be censored in Japan(from what I've heard). I guess they're becoming less lenient.
