The answer to this question would be that they don't. When a movie is made, it is made with the original in mind, but has nothing to do with the storyline or plot of the original. It gives a side universe that completely contradicts the original many times. The only thing that is consistent with the movies, vs the story line is Trunk's sword from Tapion. Even then it's rather difficult to understand.

It truly was a Shawshank redemption

There are specials and movies. The specials (Future Trunks' story and the story of Bardock) also go with the story in the manga and the anime. I think there are certain places that the movies are supposed to fit within the series, such as the Bojack movie happening after the Cell Saga, but like Kotetsu said they are seperate from the anime itself and a lof of the time contradict it. I'm sure if you googled it you could find a timeline that includes the movies.

I looked it up and according to a website Pojos DBZ movie guide, this is the order:
Movie 1 Deadzone- Before the Z storyline after the original one.
Movie 2 Worlds Strongest- After the Saiyajin battle
Movie 3 Tree of Might- After the Saiyajin battle
Movie 4 Lord Slug- Before Namek
Movie 5 Coolers Revenge- After Namek before Androids
Movie 6 10 Billion Power Warriors- After Movie 5
Movie 7 The three Super Sayians - Between Namek & Cell Saga
Movie 8 Broly 1- Between Namek & Cell Saga
Movie 9 Bojack- After Cell
Movie 10 Broly 2- Before the World Tournament
Movie 11 Crushing Super Warrior- Right after Buu is released
Movie 12 Rebirth of Fusion- During the middle of the Buu Saga
Movie 13 Dragonfist - After Buu
