Vegito's seem over confidence of his power so there is no point 4 him to of went SSJ right away if Buuhan's power didn't spook him.

Firefox Favourite Manga One Piece	I think the Animé gave an accurate depiction of this fight, I think that Vegito went SS (In the Manga) because he knew Buu would try to absorb him, and he needed to be strong enough to completely prevent it so he could rescue his friends, he had planned it all along after all. Like the old kai said: "You may not be able to power down when fused, and if I'm right about super saiyans they can't stay transformed forever. Fuse first and then only transform higher if you have to. But you won't need the extra power, trust me." (note: not exactly word for word but I did watch it again a few days ago, so pretty close.) If Vegito wasn't spooked by Buuhan he wouldn't of even bother going SSJ and when he was absorbed he just putted on a simple barrier so going SSJ was not needed if he was strong enough.

He may have gone SSJ because he panicked or just to show off. But, I feel that he could have beaten Super Buuhan - although that would only be true if Vegito didn't care about saving Gohan and the others from Buu; Vegito may have been cocky but the reason he didn't defeat Buu was because he was planning to save the others from inside Buu, but he had the strength to defeat Buuhan in his normal form, I believe, if he finished the battle straight away. I think him going SS was only because he was trying to scare buu. He was really cocky but that's what I like about his character
